Also what about the 5 cylinder engines?
>>
Volvo bricks stronk.
5 cylinder engines are sex.
>>
id avoid the s40
>>
Avoid the s50, same platform as a focus, which makes for a shitty volvo.
>>
Avoid the 960. Nothing but problems.
>>
>>13810837
Isn't the 960 just an upmarket version of the 940?
>>
>>13810862
yes. from what I've heard, the self-levelling suspension breaks and is real expensive to repair.
I see these cars for sale with over 400k kilometers on the clock, so the engines seem to be bulletproof though.

>>13810755
s40 is based on a mitsubishi platform, and is kinda shitty
>>
440s and 460s
>>
The 850 / S70 sedans are pretty good, especially with a turbo'd i5. If you need more space, the V and XC are both pretty good too, as long as you don't get those shitty crossover XC models. Lots of models from 2000-2003 had electrical issues, so opt for 1997-1999 models if possible, but they're not too expensive to fix if you can't.
Also, the 5 cylinder is amazing.

I have an '06 s40 and I love it.
>>
>>13811272
>440 buy, 460 avoid

what?
those are almost identical, only that one has a backpack and the other doesn't

1998 was the last good year for relatove simplicity and reliability
avoid the 10 valve 850s
manual trannies on the rwd ones are usually pretty crap but easy to swap
960/v90/s90 have porous blocks amd may crack and leak
later ones were better for that though
>>
basically once they start having letters in the name is when it gets risky.
>>
>>13811425
yes.

You'll always be safe with a 240, 740 or 940.
>>
>>13811425
and you're dismissing some great cars
early v70r's are some of the best cars they ever made
>>
>>13811476
Those were revised 850s, weren't they? I heard 850 taillights bolt right on.

basically yeah, off the top of my head it got those rubber strips painted, different front end, better seats and interior, better ECU (that you can tune from a laptop)
2000-onwards you start getting weird stuff like different power steering, electric throttle and other crap
>>
>>13810723

Continuing with OP question:

What is the best rwd volvo?

Is there a decent handling rwd turbo petrol with potential power upgrades?
>>
>>13811871
late 940 turbo
pretty sure boost can be upped to 12psi roght off the bat, then there's heaps of tuning options
not sure what the rear suspension is like on them, if live axle then there's still heaps of mods, if its that fibreglass leaf irs thing then there's coilovers available
>>
>>13810723
Those i5s have an orgasmic sound
I loved my old s70, and the 850 bodystyle in genral is my faveroite

What price should I be looking for on a decent 240 wagon manual with less than 200k miles?
>>
>>13810755
>>13810792

The first gen S40/V50 are complete shit, they were built at an old DAF plant in the Netherlands and aren't really true Volvos desu.

The second gen was a little better but they still have alot of issues. We had a 2006 V50 T5 that was burning coolant & oil by the time it hit 150K. Spent over 8 grand on the car in the 3 years we had it.

>>13816500

Not more than $2,000. Depends on what it needs tho.

>>13811886

You can also find a 940 with a manual, they were available in the US but super rare. Saw one on my local CL and it was gone in 2 days.
>>
>>13816694
thanks, I'm not finding many for less than 2 grand, but I'm hardly finding any that aren't automatic anyway
>>
>>13811425
Number cars are 95%good, 5% continuous issues. Letter cars are 80% good, 15% minor issues and 5% are shit.

>>13816694
The swcond gens are pretty good, but see above. Still,I really want a T5, manual C30 or S40 in Arctic White on some Pegasus' (Pegasi?).
>>
whats the best year in terms of reliability for brick wagons? Common issues to look for? Im looking for one to dd.
