it's why america's infrastructure is soo shit for the most part.

engineers would understand the importance of placing center turn lanes or right ones in strategic places. don't have to go full autistic mode and put in a continuous center lane "suicide" lane. the south in particular would be soo much better if they just added turning lanes.

and traffic wouldn't be soo shit if everyone had to focus on shifting constantly

He's talking about pic related, the suicide lanes.

But there are also 2 lane or 4 lane roads, just divided by a solid yellow line. And people will stop to make a left hand turn and hold up traffic. Same with right hand turns but they normally don't stop, just slow down.

He's saying there needs to be more dedicated turn lanes. Which is harder when there is an area that has been populated for a long time but has been growing. You can't start tearing down buildings to make turn lanes.
>>
>>13813049
germany is like georgia road wise, but turning lanes everywhere, the lanes just get narrower in areas where its older
>>
>>13813049

They just repaved a fairly large road in my town, and changed it from 2 regular lanes on each side to one lane and a turn lane in the center. I fail to see how this is better. Especially since the overwhelming majority of people who travel that road do not turn off of it in the section which was changed.

Care to explain how it's better/what they're thinking may have been?

It can be like that some places here too. I was in a left turn lane with my truck today in an older but busy area of Ft. Lauderdale and my left tires were on the median almost and my right mirrors were still in the other lane.

Lots of this area is actually designed fairly well for the traffic though. Unlike Chicago where I lived. Most of South Florida has blown up over the past ~30 years so it is fairly recent and they planned. Almost every major road is 3 lanes in either direction with a median and turn lanes.

Even the newest areas further west, roads may only be 2 or 4 lanes, but there is lots of room on the sides to develop later if needed.

Traffic still sucks a lot of the time tho.
>>
>>13813087

No bike lanes, nor sidewalks have been added and the edges of the road are unchanged (and will remain that way, since there are homes on this road), so I really cannot figure it out. It's a 40/45 MPH road and was much better when slower and faster traffic could each have their own lanes. Now slower traffic sets the pace (I am okay with this usually, but I still disagree with it) so that the occasional person can use the turn lane. It's bullshit.

i was waiting behind a sprinter van in amsterdam while a tour bus was in a left lane turning towards central train station. when the bus turned the rear of it clipped the sprinter van and propped the drivers side off the ground almost. van driver didn't even give a fuck and just drove on after the light turned green. in germany they're not as chill about accidents but their roads aren't as narrow.... but they both had pretty short curbs like at most an inch high or a little more off the road. germans park half sidewalk, half road but the dutch don't.

probably because the lanes were too narrow. georgia has what you're talking about, narrow 4 lane roads that have low speed limits like 35 but overall georgia drivers are pretty good at not hitting each other
>>
>>13813153
>half sidewalk, half road

You would get a ticket for that most places in the US.

If I park in the street in front of my house, I will do half street and half grass. Or mostly grass if I'm not leaving the car there for long. But residential and smaller streets around here never have curbs.
>>
>>13813179

I'd be more in favour of that if the speed limits were increased, but they've yet to be. And they haven't been checking speeds, which might indicate an increase. At this point, I really just do not get it.

I'm in NJ btw, and these turn lanes are very rare. Though PA has loads of them, so I've used them before.
>>
>>13813181
its mostly residential areas though, but they have dedicated spots that are really just a lane with fancy pavers where people parallel park in newer areas
>>
>>13813191
dunno why either, unless they're going to add bike lanes eventually

That'd be cool. In the warmer seasons, I bike a lot. There are loads of trails in my town, so I ride those plenty, but there is joy to be had on roads as well. But there aren't enough sidewalks, and even less bike lanes. And since I am stupid fuck and don't wear a helmet (despite having a handful of decently bad spills), I would appreciate some accommodation so I can feel a little less stupid/at risk.

And to keep relevant to the thread, yes I do shift.

Australia is similar.

If you do your driver test in an automatic car, your licence says CA and you're only allowed to drive automatics.

But if you do your driver test in a manual car, your licence says C and you're allowed to drive both manuals and automatics.

They just did that by me too. You in North NJ by any chance?
The road they did that on by me has a couple of reasons why it's better.
Road was only 2 lanes per side for maybe two miles and either way you'd go it ends up merging down to one lane per side. The way drivers are around here they basically refuse to merge properly, so it's a recipe for accidents and road rage. Not really enough traffic to have necessitated the two lanes.
They also put in a new commercial development and needed dedicated turn lanes for it forcing the lanes to merge earlier and in a blind/dangerous spot with little warning.

Yeah, North NJ. Randolph to be specific.
I can see the reasoning behind eliminating merging. People are so bad at merging. It's the best reason I've heard yet. That is, unless the bike lane idea happens. That'd be neat.
