Alright gentlemen. 10k budget, looking for a classic Chevy to do a bolt-on pro touring build.

I've found two options within a days drive.

http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5269596773.html

http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/cto/5274474539.html

The Chevelle has no info regarding drive train, and the Camaro has an iron big block and drag setup that I'll have to change out.
>>
>>13806604
The Camaro doesn't look too bad, and you can sell whatever he's got on the rear end, probably traction bars or something.
The Chevelle has been painted, and you can see rust around the boot lid. I doubt it's been garaged, and if it has it's been in a car port.
>>
>>13806604
get an unfinished project/rolling shell if you're just gonna change everything anyway
>>
>>13806688
I'd like something I can drive in the meantime, and at least in the camaro's case, selling the drivetrain, wheels/tires and rear end parts will make the already painted shell cheaper than buying an unfinished project.

Plus I can drive it home instead of renting a truck/trailer to drive it 500 miles.

Blew the head gasket. We had just turned at a light and I was going to pull over to take some pics. I looked in the mirror and see tons of white smoke coming out the back of his car. His dad's Alfa blew a head gasket twice in the past 5 years. I think he shifts too high, but that's none of my business.

i want to own a classic car i can keep on the road and drive a lot

what's a classic that's
>inexpensive to buy
>inexpensive to restore (due to cheap or abundant parts)
>reliable
>daily driver comfy
?

always wanted a toronado but i got a bad feeling they meet none of my criteria
>>
>>13806967
Or Hell even a 2-dr Mopar. I've always wanted to say I own something with a 440.
>>
>>13806906
1970. Thanks. Too bad there's no 455 in there but it's my daily so the 350 ain't so bad.
>>
>>13806967
73-78 Novas, Camaros and similar body styles. Malaise era muscle hasn't got the same demand that the golden years have, but are still capable of achieving the same goals performance-wise with a motor swap. A good example:
>>13806828
>>
>>13806983
>Inexpensive to buy
pretty much any Ford(Not older Older Lincolns), Chevy or Chrysler landboat from 1970-1979
>Inexpensive to restore
Pretty much any Ford(Not older Lincolns) or Chevy from 1970-1979
And so on an so forth for reliability and comfort
>>
>>13806987
Buick all the way buddy. I got my skylark for 8k. Though if im being honest you want a 455 in there which means a good 14-16k (If you want to count everything. You're gonna need brand new suspension, possibly interior depending, and quite a few other problems you'll have). Btw before you tell me I over-payed I'm in California. Best part about it is every part I need I can get online and it's at my doorstep in a few days.
>>
Rotting away
>>
>>13806983
Try to get something that isn't Chev or Ford, because you'll pay premiums, deal with boomers, have it stolen by niggers, and parts will be hard to find

Try mopar, like a dodge dart, plymouth fury, AMC or something like that. They can be reliable, as comfy as you make it and relatively inexpensive to buy. Nothing is going to be cheap to restore and anything you buy is going to be as hard as anything else for parts, so i recommend just to buy something not in mint condition but not junkyard condition either, try buying someones daily driver with a few things wrong with it or the paint not being 100% and you'll save cash
>>
>>13806983
From the 60s a 4 door chevelle they are ugly as sin no one wants them so they are cheap as duck maybe 3 or 4 grand running then you would have to throw a mild 350 with a muncie 4 speed behind it everything else is ganna cost you a bit

Didn't say they could rip all the original wires out from behind the dash. It needed to be rewired under the hood anyway, but all the dash wiring worked and it just kinda pisses me off that now there's hours more work added. MG guy above you, here
all of these are an electrical nightmare. Find a friend that knows how to fish wire and read a diagram.

Best way to learn to work on an engine IMO is to buy yourself an old, used lawnmower engine, like a Honda or Kawasaki model with about 8 to 15 horsepower to its name, get the service manual for it, and do a total rebuild down to every conceivable part, hone the cylinder, get new rings, and put it back together.

Don't spend more than $100 for the engine itself, there are lots of chinese clones, at least that is what us amerifats can get them for. I dunno about Britain but I'm sure you can get the same stuff.

Doing this should at least teach you some of the methodology and theory of engine work.

As for MG ownership, Join us! They are great, cheerful, albeit quirky little cars. Most of the time they are mechanically very simple and easy to understand, though sometimes odd things get done.

For finding an MGB, avoid the stromberg Carbs, you want to find one with the SU units with separate manifolds. Also, REBUILD that fuel pump. Old rubber designed for non-ethanol gas can eat through on their insides and lead to big problems.

Oh, the reality of using one daily:

Don't.

You will be much happier with yourself if you make that little car a shining, lovely thing that you *can* drive, but save for those special days, or just a night out on the town, or a warm sunny weekend trip.

Get some cheap POS for driving in the snow and the rain, you'll be much happier not seeing your baby rot away and get parking lot dings.

Another build pic of mine.

Toronodo's aren't bad. Fixing them is about the same as any other big bulky american car, even if FWD. Though they are a bit hard to find.

Why not go for something that is... somewhat classic but not overly popular or flashy, like a 1960's AMC rambler or AMC product in general?
Simple - Check
Out there in the world - Check
Parts still available - EASY
Cheap - Check.

Sure, its not quite a flashy mustang or road-eating corvette, but you will still get that 1960's styling cues and such

Heres one you could pick up for a grand:

Thanks for replying, this is great information. I've saved it for when I do eventually buy one. I'll have a look around for a cheap old lawnmower engine. Would working on a cheap, old, low power motorbike engine be similar? I'd be more interested in doing that because I ride.

Yeah, maybe a bit more complicated but that's the idea right there. I'd say probably a small-displacement Japanese bike would be the easiest to start out on, and you could do it all with just basic tools and in a small space.

Just remember: Study your manual carefully, and be sure to ORGANIZE ORGANIZE ORGANIZE. If you sort all your bolts into labeled plastic bins, you'll be a happy camper when it comes together.

Here's my dashboard build.
>>
>>13810093
>>13810131
by the way, get a bike with CARBS, not injection so you can learn the way to rebuild and tune those as well.

It makes me cringe to see when people do a car rebuild up and cry "DISPLACEMENT!, BEEFY CRANK!, HEADERS!, BIG EXHAUST TUBE! STROKE! BORE!" and then their engine runs like SHIIIIT because they didn't sort out the timing or the carburetor adjustments.

You would be amazed as to what kind of results you can get out of any unmodded, freshly rebuilt engine will give if you just take the time to get the timing and the carbs juuuuust right.

Nah, actually they are fine little cars. The Pacer is a sordid POS and some have rust issues, but really what 40 year old car doesn't if not taken care of?

The 4.0 Liter inline 6 powerplant and transmissions are ABSOLUTELY dead-solid reliable and will run and run and run and run and run and run... and run. A few passes with a wire cup brush and some fancy undercoating on the bottom and rust is no problem for years.

I really don't understand why people don't like them.

Here's an electrical tip for you, fellow MG owner.

Some indicator lights on the MG are 3 volt light bulbs with a 70 ohm "Resistor" wrapped around the socket, which really is just a thin steel wire and some paper tape. These bulbs suck donkey dick, I mean they are absolutely awful in every possible way, and they like to burn out really quick, especially when the rust on that steel wire makes it start conducting across it instead of through it and the resistance changes... horrible.

Anyway, long story short, For the little plastic-lensed indicator lamps, a 28 volt incandescent light bulb of the right size will fit right into them. (sometimes you have to take out the spring contacts and just have a wire sticking out the back that is soldered to the bulb's center pin itself, which isn't hard to do)

It is about the right brightness, doesn't have that crap look of an LED in a 50+ year old car, and will last forever, glowing softly.

More Tips and suggestions for whoever wants 'em.

Testors Enamel Paints are fantastic and come in a lot of colors that are otherwise very hard to find. Original Porsche 944 Guards Red color... exactly replicated in Testors paint... MG engine Red... testor's paint. Forget spending $$$$$$$ if you just need a little touch up, just go to your local hobby or train store and pick up a little bottle for a buck or two. And its good paint, too.

Generators, alternators, and positive ground:
unless you have a really good reason to, don't change these things. Generators work fine. A little cleanup of the brushes and you can get tens of thousands of miles service out of a series wound generator. Your classic car doesn't need that much electricity, and your generator is fine.

Positive ground? Leave it. Neg ground and positive ground in the grand scheme of things really don't make too much of a difference in auto electronics, but for what original equipment exists it is often designed to work one way or the other. Realistically speaking, it is SUPER easy to isolate a radio from chassis ground if you want to do an upgrade, and yes, your car radio will work just fine even if its outside metal casing is not grounded to the chassis but is instead tied to the battery.
As for the "corrosion" argument, a 12 volt system will take an eternity and a half to corrode your car's frame. Long story short, just don't bother.

Electrical system Isolation:

Personally, I believe that the original Lucas electric designs, and many other auto electrics pre-1950 are severely deficient in design. Fortunately, armed with a few reels of 14 gauge wire of various colors, a standard fuse-block, and a bit of cleverness, most of these problems can go away right quick. Usually, nothing more is required than to sift through your car's wiring diagram, pick off critical points, add fuses, and instead of running power directly to the switches on the dash themselves, to use a relay...

By the way: beware of "Digital" systems that use your original switchgear on your dashboard to control inputs into a microcontroller, etc.

As it turns out, switches are complicated things, and they all have different properties when related to their behavior at different voltages and currents.

For example, a switch designed normally to operate at 1 to 5 amps output probably has either bare copper contacts, or silver plated contacts. There is nothing wrong with this, however these have a notable flaw:

Copper and silver oxidize, and in a short time as well. This doesn't affect the switch operating normally, because when it is turned on, the surge of current passing through it will zap the oxide layer away. However, if this switch is ONLY used to operate a digital input, and is switching microamps instead of amps or miliamps, it can cease to function reliably.

This is why I prefer relays, they work nice.

If you really want a vintage switch to operate a digital output, there are ways of making it happen, of course. If anyone wants to know, let me know, i am still in the thread.

Anyone got any suggestions for chasing down electrical gremlins? I was fucking around with the light switch on my '69 F-250 when I heard a pop from under the hood, opened it up and there was a bunch of smoke from an unknown source, and the truck has no power now. My dad did, It used to sit at 2-2.5 grand at 60km in 3rd gear, almost revving its tits off at 100

nice. always thought it was an interesting shifter setup.

I would daily 1, but it would need good gearing so it doesn't rev so high

Get yerself a handheld AM radio. Tune it somewhere there is nothing coming over the air. Then with the key on, hold the radio next to the harness and move it around. Any interference indicates that there is a short in that general area, even if the insulation isn't broken.

Or buy one of those short finder things if you want to waste a ton of money.

Why in gods unholy fuck would the last owner remove not some, but all of the vapor barrier. Door panels are fucked, rotting from the inside out. Got the correct fuel filter installed today though so I got that going for me.

>want to get a 60s-80s Japanese car
>doesn't matter if I have to import it or buy one off Kijiji
>would like to know what resources would be best for me so I can find the pitfalls and problems before I buy a car
Does anyone have any good resources on nostalgic/classic Japanese cars? I know that old American cars have an easy time getting parts. But I wonder what the situation is like for an old Celica, Colt Galant, Z, or whatever else I find out there. Figuring out the expenses of a car before I buy it would be a good idea at this stage. I'm really only planning now.
So any resources you know of would be awesome.
>>
I live in the UK. What's the cheapest v8 classic I can get my hands on? generic old muscle cars like ford mustang etc are always imports and priced very very high.
>>
>>13833758
Get a nice Alfa m8, I'm stateside and wish I could get my hands on one. If you're really broke, get a Lancia, just invest in life insurance
>>
>>13833758
Could go for a Jensen Interceptor
>>
>>13833773
Too uncommon.

>>13833788
Because it was actually made in the UK it gets the supreme markup of +200% price because memes.

I'm probably just going to get a Nissan z31 at this point and call it a day. Anything nice I got would only rust like shit with the amount of wet and salt in this shithole.
>>
>>13833806
Find yourself a Russian Lada. They're the shittier version of the Lancia and they're made by good old soviets and their "reliable" designs

Thanks man

First gen celicas are hard to keep going. The cars are rare in U.S if you want a coupe, not a liftback. If you live in aus you'll have a much easier time. If your looking for a classic japanese that you'll be able to keep on the road look for a 240/60 z car
>>
>>13833894
I'm considering a wide variety of models, and that's why I left open more than thirty years of cars. But I might want the 70s more than the 60s or 80s cars.
A Z would definitely be a good starting point.
>>
>>13833894
>The cars are rare in U.S if you want a coupe, not a liftback

To be fair, the liftbacks are dead fucking sexy. They're like a slimmed down '69 Mustang.
>>
>>13833894
>tfw I love the 240z too

Fuck thanks for reminding me family. I wouldn't mind a coupe or a liftback, I just want that front, reminds me of 67/68 Firebirds

There's a handful of 240's around the northeast coast and I've only seen ONE 1st gen Celica on CL, and to be fair I only checked maybe two or three times kek, and the guy wanted I think 7k for it, it was a liftback too.

Dream garage would definitely be a 1st gen Celica, 240/60z, 68-72 Nova, and my 72 Chevelle

>>13833894
>The cars are rare in U.S if you want a coupe, not a liftback. If you live in aus you'll have a much easier time

If you find a genuine 2 seater in Aus you'll be paying >$10k au for a rusty shit heap.
