Company don't give a damn if we go over as long as it's less than ten minutes and not happening constantly. I've done it three times in four months, they don't mind.
>>
>>13792928
ALWAYS know where the fuck your truck and trailer are and what they're doing as you maneuver, know what's to either side, above, below, in front, and behind. When in doubt, GOAL - Get Out And Look. Even if bumping a dock takes you ten minutes, who gives a fuck as long as you don't hit anything. Also don't adjust your trailer axles the wrong direction when you pick up a loaded trailer early in the morning and check the scale ticket from the last driver and decide it needs adjusting because you'll get it wrong and get a ticket in Georgia and they'll tell you "no you can't adjust the tandems in order to correct the issue, you can move the freight though," but the freight is 1000's of pounds of liquid in bulk liquid containers ffffuuuu

What sector of this industry has the least amount of fat people? I hate fat people so much, cannot be around them.
>>
>>13794265
Probably local jobs, can't imagine it's easy to remain fat while sweating your balls off like PepsiFag.

Arrived at consigned address last night, woke up, not a soul here at 0900. Called, "Oh yeah we don't operate there any more, go to this address." Welp.
>>
>>13794408
Hahaha ouch! That's gotta throw a wrench in your hours for today.

I had a deliver of grape pulps at a winery and on all documents, they had the storefront address. Even dispatch called the consignee multiple times and they were told that the delivery address was the same as the storefront address - which was on the main street of a quaint little town. Once I get there, lo and behold - "no sir, we need you to go to our warehouse which is 85 miles away"

The majority of OTR drivers are at least slightly overweight, most guys can't adjust to sitting in a cab all day and it's hard to find good healthy food in a truckstop.

I hope the DOT passes body weight requirements soon.

At the school bus company we have some reaaallly fat drivers, one of them only works periodically because he's in the hospital all the time due to heart/breathing problems. I can't imagine how bad it will be when he inevitably has a heart attack behind the wheel with a load of kids on board

Maybe they should start assessing the weight of the truck including the truck and the driver?

That 300lb of fat you're carrying around might be harming your margin. Or, worse, the company's margin. Quite literally, shape up or ship out.
Imagine if a big company like Swift mandated a maximum weight for drivers, and tiny bonuses for lighter drivers?

How did the pickup truck cause the semi to swerve that much? The first driver must have just swerved to avoid dude in pickup without thinking of the other truck on his left.

I drove past this strip club at 6am this morning in my truck, and I'm pretty sure somebody got murdered. There were tons of cops and they had the whole place taped off. And some of the strippers were outside too just watching what was habbening. They looked fine even even their after-work clothes. I need to go back to that strip club.

Ayy so somebody did die! I think this strip club has a fairly hood crowd. A couple weeks ago there were a bunch of cops there around 6am breaking up some fighting nigs.

Gotta love the hood. I had a dude try and sell me some fake-ass cologne today while I was taking shit off the truck. Then another dude try and sell me earrings. I didn't buy either but earring dude said he was just tryin to make some money for a bag of green so I gave him a cig and a cold Orange Crush.

I need input of all truckerfags in this thread. I'm a 40 year old man. Worked my whole life in factories. 10 years as a toolmaker, and 10 as a millwright. I have two teenage daughters, and a very understanding wife, who has tolerated me over the years as an alcohol and drug abuser. But, I always went to work to provide. My situation has changed. I start CDL school next Monday. I kind of don't want to truck, but the call of the road is strong. I know I'm too old to be here; but what advise do you have for me?
>>
>>1379984
Expect to be treated like shit first couple of years working, long stretches of time not at home, might have to do some tough manual labor as well on occasion, as well as shitty pay

Once you're past that, you can get a higher paying job, less hours and not as much time away from home, maybe become an owner operator and make even more money
>>
>>13799844
Dude, you are aware the average age of a truck driver is from 30 to 65 right? Your fine, and if you don't want to be out much be local or regional. Depending on location you could have a sweet job pulling potatoes to a chip factory and then go sleep in your own bed.
>>
>>13799799

>>13799844
My trainer has been trucking for longer than I've lived, and nearly as long as you've lived. Don't worry about how old you are, just how good you are at your job. Put in your two years as a company kek, apply for jobs with better pay/home time, and if you end up liking it, try to convince the wife to come along after the kids are out on their own and buy your own truck+trailer and work for yourself. Make mad bank, leave a few days early on every load and waste time seeing the sights along the route to the destination.

Oi truckerfags,

If I have a question.

If a tyre is has a load rating of 92 (630kg) does this mean with two tyre on an axle (one each side), the axle has a load carrying capacity of 1260kg or is it still 630kg?

>>
>>13800679
The axle load rating is an independent value from the tire load rating, pretty sure you can find it in your papers. Your tire load rating should always be and in many countries must always be at least half of your axle load rating.
>>

Its for a homemade trailer just a small 7x4 box trailer.

I have a blank VIN plate and it I need to fill in the blanks.

Tare:200kg
Aggregate Trailer Mass: 650kg
The next bit I am not sure what to put and the customer service officer at the DOT was no help either.
Load carrying capacity of axle or axle group: ?
>>
>>13801013
>Load carrying capacity of axle or axle group
Usually it is what the suspension is rated for.
>>
>>13801013
Well, where did you get the axle? Was there any paperwork with that?

In the US most cheap trailer axles are rated for 3500 lbs /about 1600 kg. given your stated 650kg gross weight, though, that's massive overkill.

Put down any number you want that's bigger than 650 and smaller than the combined weight rating of your two tires.

So today I jacked a dump truck with a pindle hook carrying a trailer super hard and broke my emergency line off at the glad hand. I replaced the hose and glad hand but the glad hand attached to the truck is a little fucked up, but it appears to be holding its seal.

Thing is when I turn my engine off and do the brake line test my trailer air bleeds like super fucking fast and theres a stream of air coming out of the front driver side air relay valve.

My question is did my super hard jack and fucked up air line repair cause the relay valve to break?

Pizza delivery jobs are the only jobs I have liked.

If the highlight of pizza delivery for you was the driving I'd say you'll enjoy over-the-road trucking. It's like 80-90% driving and just sitting in the truck, the other 10-20% is inspections/fueling/paperwork at shipper/consignee.

I thought most flatbed drivers owned/leased their trailers too.
How much would your trailer cost to purchase? Is it worth it VS just paying off the broker and having someone else's equipment to play with?

I know someone in our company who is an o/o and owns the reefer trailer that he pushes as well. Has his license for about 3 years and makes well into +$90k/yr territory. (Toronto - Texas reefer loads x 3/week)

So I demolished one or two of pic related yesterday. Had to run somebody else's route on the beach.
Making a right turn onto Ocean Blvd. No way I could make the turn without going into oncoming lanes, and it would've taken forever to get a break in traffic.

>trying to call out of work today because crippled
>Fridays are heavy, boss keeps trying to tell me no
>talk some shit back to him after like 5 other drivers called out yesterday
>just take the airport

Ehh I guess I will go in. Just roll a few pallets off the truck and go home. I'm sure something will go wrong and I will be there all day anyway.
>>
>>13808521
Jeez sounds like you need to call in earlier..
>>
>>13808897
Bruh I told him yesterday that I was all fucked up and would probably call out today. I get routed anyway. Texted him at like 4:30. Then two or three other drivers somehow don't show up and I have a real route. I only came in because I expected to just run the airport real quick.

I'm beyond pissed off. I was going to just leave and go back home but my boss was like "you have to call JobHurt then" and end up on light duty. I should've left anyway. I have a dude helping me so I'm just chilling in the truck now while he finishes this 7-11. But I brought a bunch of shit in and my back is killing me.

This make perfect sense. Thanks anon.

Also just FYI, Straya and I just bought some stub axles and welded them into 50mmx50mmx3mm tube. That setup is rated for 1000kg.

It cost me about 300 dollardoos for metal and to buy a pre made 7x4 box trailer is about 1200 dollarydoos. I am really glad I bought that mig welder years ago.

Story time, from my dispatcher, let's call him H:

Years ago, When H was pulling dry van, he got a load of Wendy's chili ingredients, big gallon cans of meat & beans. One of the pallets, a can on top had erupted in the heat and made a mess. It also molded, so Wendy's rejected that whole pallet. He cleaned off the cans so they weren't nasty and gave away as much of that shit as he could at truck stops, but it was surprisingly slow-going.

One day, he stopped at a rest area that was all brand new, and he was just looking around at some of it when he noticed they even had brand new dumpsters. One looked empty so he decided to get rid of the last few cans of chili slop.

He threw all the cans into the dumpster, and just as he was putting the pallet back in the trailer (any shipper/receiver will take a free pallet, and he didn't want to be a dick tossing a pallet in there), a highway patrol car whizzes up next to him.

The HP officer gets out and is rather a dickhead right away, carrying on about charging H with littering if he doesn't get in that dumpster and get those cans out.

H - "Let's start off on the right foot: I'm not getting in that dumpster, and definitely not fetching those cans, even if you put that gun in my face."

The interaction quickly devolves into a shouting match.

Eventually, the officer gets an urgent call - a crash with a fatality down the interstate. The officer has no choice but to abandon this and attend to it.

Just as the officer is getting into his patrol car, H grabs that pallet, holds it over his head so the officer will notice him, and flings it out on the pavement, right in the path of vehicles at the rest area.

The office is visibly fucking pissed, and speeds off.

Someone please explain to me the appeal of the International Lonestar. It's quite literally a Prostar with a fancy front clip and nothing more. Interior is the same, powertrain options are the same, everything is the same.

Just about the only Lonestars I ever see are company trucks that were bought for the really old million mile drivers. Doesn't seem like any independent O/Os ever buy them.

I think Roehl has like 3 or 4 and I've seen several with Celadon livery.

Worst brand halo truck ever. International used to make great trucks, now it's all disposable trash marketed towards the McCompanies.
>>

>>13810464
A W900 is just a T600 with a longer nose. A K521C is just a K521 with no hood. People have been paying more for a fancy hood as long as trucks have been a thing.
>>
>>13810143
That sucks mang.
>>13810446
Not PepsiFag, but from what I can tell they only pair folks up in situations like what he's in now, and training new kids.
>>13810464
The appeal is that it's basically the semi truck version of new-retro rice. The hood/grille/front fender shape scream 40's era hot rod made anew. If it weren't for International's current infamy for making shitty trucks, I'd be tempted to buy one when the time comes. I think they look good.

i was a stagehand for a thing for WS about two years ago they brought out optimus prime had to walk the thing through the convention center and hook up power for all the lights they let me climb in it and take a look around the attention to detail in and on that thing was insane said there was over $150k in modifications made to it for the movie

Do drivers not cheat the logs anymore? How do you make any money without fudging the log?

I thought diesel fuel was (relatively speaking) hard to ignite...

my cdl trainer told us that you could drop a lit cigarette into the fuel tank and it would just fizzle out almost like dropping it into water.

also, DEF, if I'm not mistaken, IS mostly water
>>
>>13814778
Def is water and urea. It is entire non-flammable. Fairly non-toxic as well, until it starts to degrade into ammonia.
>>
>>13814825>>13814825
32.5% urea, 67.5% water.
distilled water: ~$0.90/gallon at wolmort, practically free if you build your own still.
Urea: ~$260/metric tonne.
Retarded ballpark math:
1 tonne=2200ish pounds.
Water=8ish pounds
Call it 2.6 lbs urea and 5.4 lbs water for 1gal def. Incorrect but fuck your absolute accuracy, not the point I'm trying to make.
Out of that tonne, you get ~846 (2200/2.6) urea portions, or around $0.30 per gallon.
The water comes to about $0.57 if you're buying gallons off the shelf at walmart.

Compare that to the price of DEF, anywhere.
It's a total racket.

Want cheap DEF?

You can get quantities ranging from 1lb $7.99 to crazy quantities which are cheaper...

Seems to be standard. They're hiring more drivers where I work, so they're going to steal my assistant to assist THEM instead.

Fuck it. I'm leaving anyway, once I get a better job.
>>
>>13814965
To be fair, only about 80,000 cars drive by you, they just do it twice every day.
>>
>>13814778

Diesel only ignites under heat and pressure. Thats why trucks run like shit when its super cold out, the engine just isn't warm enough for the fuel to ignite properly.

Yea it was a prototype built in Portland, and I think all of the modifications was done in SC. They brought it by work when the movie came out.

We build the Aussie Freightshakers, but it'd be pretty fucking awesome to build road train tractors.

They already use freightshakers as road train. they usually have the road friendly airbag setup and the tasty motors we aren't allowed to use here in USA

Yea I've built them, they're usually HD setup Coronados or old Columbias.

Almost all of them get Cummins, and their emissions shit isn't nearly what ours is. They still for the most part just have a muffler, no DEF tanks, and US trucks have huge ADT's/DEF tanks by comparison

I'm looking to switch things up and get hired at TMC, they offer two pay options: $0.40 cpm to start. Or 26%

>26%

WAT. Am I going to get bamboozled with percentage pay?
>>
>>13818273
no one's going to steal them
>>
>>13818273
Never had clothes stolen.
Have had my clothes taken out of the washer and piled on the counter if I wasn't there when the cycle ended.
Not like I blame them.
>>
>>13818273
I never wait around and haven't had a problem. I do make sure to be there when the cycle ends though.

>>13818467
Friend drove for TMC a couple years ago. Generally liked it but had to go home because one of the brats only obeys daddy. Anyway, he did the percentage version, I thought he was at 28%, and the only thing about it that sounded suspicious was that you only had their word on what the load paid the truck. I mean they might tell the driver the load paid $1200 but it really paid $2500. There's no way to know. He didn't like that loads were timed pretty tight. Like no time to piss tight. Dispatch constantly bitching about idle time and no APU's. Strong emphasis on overnighting at the receiver for every load. Lane departure damnthing goes off constantly.

That's all that comes immediately to mind
>>
>>13818907
Oh yeah, they're big on having newbs training newbs. He'd only been driving about 6 months and they pressured him into training. He also said they immediately started treating the truck as a team operation as soon as a student got on board. That's C.R England level shit right there.

I want to go otr and bring my wife for a while. How long does it take to feel like you got enough experience to bring someone you care about with you?
>>
>>13819962
Not long. You will feel save in the truck most times as long as you aren't driving through Colorado in a blizzard.

Most of the damage done is at low speeds in close quarters.
>>
>>13819977
Thanks. Also, how much time, if any, is really needed to train (not team, train) with a trainer?
>>
>>13820069
I do local. I was with another dude for 4 weeks. Driving for 2 or 3 of those weeks.

I think OTR is anywhere from 2 or 3 weeks to 2+ months depending on company and how competent you are.

Why is this place so cheap compared to every other CDL school? Is it a scam or are the other schools just screwing their students?

They probably make you pay extra for logging driving hours in their trucks. There's got to be something like that. $500 isn't even close to the cheaper Class A schools.

>>13820930
I plan to attend a 2 month long TN Technology Center. It'll be less than $900 I think, extra fees and all. The cheapest private school I have found was probably about $4,000. I probably would make more just going to one of those or a company school due to time lost in training and waiting to, but I want to be able to completely walk away from any company if I choose to.
>>
If I enroll at a local community college to lern2truck is it possible to attend classes as I have days off or does it have to be done in a more formal, scheduled manner?

I can't really just stop going to work for two months to take a CDL course, and it seems that the only other option is to sign on with Stevens or CR England and get paid some chickenshit amount while training, but get locked into driving OTR with them for a year.
>>
>>13821067

about 3 months. got 20K under my belt, did my first snow and ice driving across 94 in Billings a couple days ago, that was fun

>rollan, fully loaded 34k in the box
>snowing, slow down to like 35
>no traffic, easy mode
>get to bridge
>all kinds of flashy lights watch out for ice etc.
>steering wheel inputs start doing nothing
>realize im sliding in the ice
>get off bridge
>tires catch traction and the whole truck lurches slightly to the left
>was at the end of my hours so found a place to park after that lol
>everythingwentbetterthanexpected.cr2

My trainer has said pretty much if we have to chain up or the wind is over a certain amount we're sitting. We caught 60mph gusts in Montana a week ago and parked on Elk Mountain.
>>
>>13821103
I got my license through a private school. It was very lax. For classroom hours, you just show up whenever you can and sign in and out to get your hours.

The classroom hours are basicially you in a room studying yourself. An instructor is there in the afternoons most days though. And the place is open like 7am-9pm daily.

So it was really easy to schedule around work.

Also Tfag, did you get your license in IL?
>>
>>13820994
I can do all that except downshift without looking at my speed, been driving 4 months

Shits fucking hard without grinding the gears
>>
>>13821103
Check your area. Many have weekend classes. I have found private schools that will delay payment until you get a job, also.

There are many OTR companies that provide training that aren't CR England tier:
Millis
Roehl
Conway Truckload
Prime
Henderson Trucking

I Know Henderson has something like a high $7xx guaranteed income after training. Prime pays .43 a mile but has small slow trucks and requires 40K miles of teaming or something like that.

I Just don't wanna be tied to the industry, but don't feel like all trainer companies are total shit. Just do a ton of research.
>>
>>13821815
Weekend classes don't work either. I work a rotating 9 day cycle that's 6 on and 3 off.
>>
>>13821134
>Elk Mountain
For future reference, if there's weather on the mountain it's better to jump onto US 30 at Laramie, or exit 235 if you're heading East, and go around the mountain. It adds 16 miles but doesn't have the grades and winds to deal with. Some drivers go that way all the time in so as to not beat the truck up climbing.
>>
>>13821886
This is definitely good to know, I'll probably die during the winter unless I can quit trucking until spring.

Almost broke off one of my doors at Pepsi, hit a turn with tandems all the way back (fucking tandems were seized and wouldn't move) and tapped a concrete pole with my doors open. Tore two hinges clean off, but they got fixed without any questioning. I feel like a failure more and more each day.
