Big Damn Truck Edition
>Obtaining a CDL: How do?
Community College or a dedicating truck driving school. Do your research and don't get sucked into a "school" that's actually just a meat grinder for a shit company. Do not pay over $5000 for a course that lasts several months.
>How can I into avoidings shit companies?
Here are some decent/good companies:
http://pastebin.com/Sv0cyWyH
If you don't see the company you're looking at included on this list, lurk moar.

>I could totally go to school but I'd rather be a trucker.
If you think you'll love the lifestyle, maybe. You'd be better off getting a """""real""""" job. You can fall back on trucking at any time, but it is essentially a path of decent money for those that fail at everything else.
You can have good business sense and work ethic and make it big as an owner operator, but you would do even better at any other job.

Damn I thought you blew a steer this time. Unrelated but here's my giggles for today.

>Red Dodge Ram merges onto the interstate
>Dude hits 60 and holds steady
>70 limit zone, people get mad
>Dude slows, veers onto rumble strip
>Jerks back to lane, speeds up
>Keeps doing this, regularly drops to 50-55
>Hit a hill
>Dude does it again
>Signal left
>Chebby truck bro lets me over
>Get alongside Dodge, he's doing like 45-50
>Blast air horn
>Jerks to life and speeds up
>Dude looks at me like I just spit on him
>Shake my head and pass
Can't tell if he was drunk, tired, or texting, but it doesn't matter - dude was an idiot. Several miles later he merged left and passed me like I was parked. Bet he called Roehl with some bullshit story. Haven't heard from anyone yet though.

Probably the only time I've used that horn outside of a pre trip. I passed within inches of him still trying to slow down. I pulled off at the next exit and said fuck this I'm done.
>>
>>15348443
Did you read the whole thing?

left lane passing another truck
>check mirrors not clear to move over
>look back in front of me

Seems like it was a lapse of concentration while trying to be safe and make sure he didn't hit the truck he was passing.
>>
>>15348478
Still applies as he didnt have a big enough gap.

It only takes 1 second to look itno mirrors and see.
>>
>>15348497
Fair enough. I found out from the cops there was construction ahead and one lane was closed. There was just bo warning signs up.

>right lane closed ahead
>merge left

They said i wasnt the first and probably wont be the last. Its good though.

Thankfuly no. The boss said
>90 days without calling about a blown tire on that truck.

Hey truckerfags I've been lurking in these threads for a while and I have a few questions. I asked my aunt (who used to drive) about some general things about trucking but I'd like to know some more about getting started. I don't have any money or a CDL and looking to do the company sponsored training deal (aware of the contract).

I turn 21 in August. Can I call some companies now, or should I wait?

If I get good news, will they cover lodging, meals and transportation?

I could go to a community college and get my CDL there, but no money and you have to pay upfront to get the SWIDG (or something) grant. What do?

>In the UK, the test is a couple of hours of driving.

A couple of HOURS? For just a regular 4-wheeler license? wow. My drivers license practical test took 15, 20 minutes tops. As best I can recall...

>90º backing out of parking space
>parallel park between two cones behind the building
>right turn from Dept of Licensing parking lot onto 30 MPH arterial with light traffic
>Left turn at signalized intersection into 25 mph residential neighborhood with no traffic.
>drive around the block
>Right turn at stop sign back onto arterial
>Left turn back into DoL parking lot, midblock from suicide lane
>"Ok son, you passed, take this paper inside and get your picture taken."

That was back in the mid 90's. I've never been retested, although I have to pay for a renewal every 5 years. My wife got her first license in Arizona, and that one is still valid - 40 year renewal interval in AZ.

Before you get to the judge you'll have a quick meeting with the prosecutor who will most likely offer reduced tickets and penalties. Any deal offered is probably as good as you're going to get because these people do this shit everyfuckingday and you're not going to beat them due to your inexperience with the game. Barring something like absolute proof that it couldn't have been you because you were somewhere else you will be found guilty.

It's more like pity. I actually feel bad for how miserable your life is.
>>
>>15350534
That's the reason why you see so much morons on your roads, since anyone with half a brain will so easily be allowed to drive.

In Europe, you have to endure 20 hours of being dragged through every trap your instructor can think of before you're even allowed to take the driving test (which can turn into quite a shitshow depending on how sadistic your examiner is).

Mine was half an hour late and in a good mood, so my test was piss easy.
>driving from test center to main road through the city center
>merging on an express road
>turn left on a roundabout
>parking on an empty lot
>turn right on the same fucking roundabout
>leave express road
>drive back to test center
>"Parisian" parking (that's when you should do a neat manoeuvre to parallel park but instead just drive into a spot forward and don't give a shit. We were late)

The girl taking the test right after me on the other hand got served the shittest possible route including residential areas with fucked up priority rules and parking on a school lot on the first day of school (so lots of pedestrian, other traffic, cyclists and shit all around). Most people will eventually make a mistake and get flunked in this situation.
>>
>>15351291
Just because you don't enjoy my life doesn't mean I don't. I'm content with where I'm at right now, and when shit happens, I deal with it.
>>
>>15351178
I take that back. They fucked up on the paper work and put down 41k lbs instead of the 14k lbs that was actually being delivered. Second stop only ordered 2 pallets.
>>
>>15348530

And for my third shitpost in a row, working with drivers fucking sucks.

> Go down to check loading bay

> Nobody put binbags in them
> Go to empty them, huge swathes of paper towel loosely bound together with sticky labels fall out of the binbag I was emptying into
> Every fucking time
> Have to squat down and pick everything up by hand. Thank fuck for protective gloves.
> Hands stink of trash all day
> Cans of energy drink, some half empty, none even slightly crushed
> Paperwork that should be disposed of properly just abandoned
> No longer suitable for shredding due to being stuck to a banana skin
> Someone left a water bottle in a bay
> Can't reach it, leave it there, someone runs it over on the way out
Drivers are the grubbiest fuckers ever, I swear.
But now all three bins have fresh bags in, snugged up tight over the top. It's not even my job to do the ones on the bay, I was just sick of the smell.

> Get to end of day
> Someone drops a bottle of beer

Just get your own truck like an adult. The first year you have any truck is going to be plagued with breakdowns and repairs. Once you get everything buttoned up you should have learned the truck well enough for it to be smooth sailing until the inframe.

Go apply for the loan and tack on a little extra so you can pay for food and extras while you're in school, then just pay the addition of the loan off after your company has paid off the majority.

Back in my retail management days, some of the companies I worked for only accepted sealed loads. The DC/shipper would put a tamper seal on the trailer door latch, we were supposed to reject any load with a broken seal.

It was supposed to keep truckers from stealing shit, but after working at the company for a few months it was painfully obvious that internal theft was rampant and most of it was happening within the DC.

About a month ago a PTL driver's 8 year old tard spawn got out of the truck with his equally retarded English pitbull and proceeded to have a 45 minute conversation with me about the struggles of being a 3rd grader on the road while I was trying to tarp a load of shingles at a TA in Sawyer, MI. He thought California was on the toe he'd ridden between PA and IL. Yea, at least where I work. They absolutely do not want you bobtailing anywhere. If you aren't hauling a load you are hauling an empty trailer. Even though I'll park an hour from the drop yard they want me pulling a trailer.

It's not necessarily the labor laws, it's kinda the whole economy. A 4-year degree doesn't mean that much anymore and the middle class can't afford $150k for those degrees. Middle-management not being worth the effort involved, diminishing hours and overtime available at hourly jobs, and a median income around $40k not being enough to support a family is getting all these people thinking that a CDL is the way out. It is bringing a bunch of worthless people into the industry and the people who are actually good at it aren't getting payed what they are worth since they can keep paying to train these fuckups instead of promoting and paying the people who hang around long term and do well at their job. It's the same in so many industries. Hard work and years if service to a company doesn't get promotions and raises like it used to.

o I'm hanging out in a postage stamp sized Pilot that's right outside a Kroger DC and watching the rodeo here at 10pm. Place fits about 60 trucks but only about 15 spots are not going to leave you trapped in the morning. And good luck trying to use or leave the fuel island after midnight.

Navajo's been orbiting the lot for at least an hour looking for a spot and he's gotten fucked out of spots at least three times by being out of position when one does open up and other drivers beat him to them.

Spent about 20 minutes watching Perdue block traffic while trying to hit an impossible spot because KLLM parked at the end of a row of that isn't actually a row and is too close for anybody to be able to hit it.

Looks like Navajo found a hole but it's across from the scale and there are literally four trucks outboard of the scale, blocking everybody in that area. He's got that truck so bent, way past 90, I'll be amazed he doesn't take off somebody's hood or mirror.

Here's a (crappy) video on youtube. If that's what it is the trailer itself is connected to the truck with a pintle hook and the truck also has a kind of fifth wheel type device to share the load. It's weird.

We legit convert our kms to miles to calculate how much we get paid lol

Most of our work is cross border deliveries and we're told to fuel up as much as possible in US. (If you don't, it's not bad. Just....expect dispatch to talk to you about it before your next trip)
>>Canadian paid loads pay for office and dispatch + leased trucks
>>USD loads pay for fuel and drivers etc
I guess having a Canadian bank account and US bank account for the company helps weather a few minor economic disruptions

It's one of the reasons this country has gone to shit. The bottom line keeps dropping lower to satisfy investors while absolutely decimating the middle class in the process. I talked to someone I used to work at Lowe's with and she told me the new managers are now getting paid about $20k less a year than previous ones.

I feel bad for my friend who majored in Anthropology, he's absolutely fucked.
>>
>>15366955
>the middle class can't afford $150k for those degrees

It doesn't have to cost that much if people are smart about it. In-state colleges, financial aid, etc. can really take that edge off. I got sick of being used and abused for starvation wages with a high school diploma, so I'm grinding my way through college now and I have literally zero tuition. Of course it helps that I'm in my 30's and don't have to report my parents' income on my FAFSA.

When I was fresh out of high school, it was another story. A bunch of my friends had parents who never learned to manage their own finances; 2-income families with over 100k/year coming in, but still living paycheck to paycheck with no savings. Their FAFSA's came back with estimated family contributions of 25k/year and their parents all said "lol nope, we have a lifestyle to maintain," while the financial aid offices all said "Your EFC is enough to cover the full cost of attendance, so we have no aid for you, but here are the names of some private student loan companies with loanshark-like interest rates in case the Stafford loan's 14k maximum doesn't cut it."

And then of course because they inherited their parents' lack of financial management, they all ended up with 100k of extra debt at 9% APR by the time they graduated.

i went to a mediocre college and graduated with an engineering degree with a nearly 3.9 GPA. due to my parent's low income FAFSA covered everything, but after graduating i wasn't able to find any job. in fact, a lot of my peers that weren't women or black had difficulty finding jobs and those that did find jobs mostly had to resort to accepting 40k/year positions out of desperation. average national starting pay for engineers is 60k/year and i live in a high cost of living city.

i'm now in my 4th year of a phd program making about 25k/year. graduate school sucks dick, and unlike medical doctorates you aren't guaranteed a decent paying job, or any job at all. due to that i contemplated dropping out and applied to a few positions last year. the only offer i got was for a field engineer position (i'm in an experimental lab and we do a lot of hands on work and troubleshooting since the equipment is old and my adviser is a jew that refuses to pay for technicians.) the kicker is that while i applied for a full time position they offered my an intern position that paid half of what the full time position did.

what i'm getting at is that you're better off going into debt if it means going to a prestigious college with high employment rates for their graduates instead of ending up like me.

Or not falling for the college meme at all and just go into a trade school. Or trucking

That's what I'm saying about "be smart about it".

Do your research. Know what your schools placement rate is for your major. Protip: More expensive/prestigious schools are not necessarily better in this regard!

Consider this image, from a Wired article detailing where big-name US tech firms hire their employees from. Observe that the feeder schools are mostly cheap public universities.

This is why I'm attending the University of Washington and majoring in CS.

You should have already had a job lined up by graduation day. Did you even do internships, work placements, get experience while in school, on campus job fairs? Did you even have a reason to be an engineer? Did you have a passion for it before you started or is it just some autistic venture to make money and be le stem? Because that comes through in a resume and interviews. Most of the ME/SE/AE graduates at my school were hired as engineers. 40% through placements and 15% through job fairs at UCSD.

I hear this shit all the time "I can't find a job". I think it's total bullshit. For me, the knowledge was 80% of the point and I still got an engineering job 3 months after school. People don't take full advantage of what their school offers, they don't have a passion for it, they don't work while in school, they refuse to take low paying jobs for experience, they aren't up to date with the software or processes for certain fields, they get way over their heads in debt, and they pick the wrong schools for their major. There's more to getting a job than just sitting in a classroom and getting accredited.

There's a lot of good cheap public engineering schools that have close relations with employers. in socal cal poly, ucsd, and sdsu have 80% engineering placement.

Thanks.
I meant to get there two hours early but the need for a jumpstart, then construction traffic, set me back. I guess I'll git gud and learn to plan better eventually.

Btw, is it a good idea to jumpstart a tractor using a reefer's battery? I imagine while the reefer is set to Continuous. Someone had suggested that to me today.
>>
>>15379528
Yes that fine. Better to jump it with the reefer engine running for the extra volts and amps.
>>
>>15379528
That should work fine, but give it plenty of time to charge before cranking.

The usual analogy for electricity is water.

When hooked in parallel(pos-pos, neg-neg) like in your truck, you are increasing the size of the pool. The output remains the same. You can run longer before running out.
As you add batteries in series (pos-neg) you increase the flow speed (voltage) but the size of your pool remains the same.

So your reefer and truck have the same flow speed, 12 volts, you can hook them together in parallel no problem, but your truck's alternator is a fire hose to fill a swimming pool, and the alternator on your reefer is a garden hose to fill a kiddy pool.

The upshot is it works fine, but you're filling a swimming pool with a garden hose.
At the same time, hooking your reefer's single charged battery to your truck's bank of dead batteries is like dumping a kiddy pool into an empty swimming pool.
You wouldn't want to dive right away.
Let the garden hose run.

>>
>>15381399
We jump them with a pickup truck. Good ol' Ferd F-250. Right in the grill, there is one of those outlets like you see for pallet jacks and forklifts, and the jumper cables plug into that. It normally takes at least 20min before the truck will crank though.

Is trucking a good way to see the country? Would it be worth going through the whole process just to drive for about a year or so to see different places?

As a company driver it'll let you look at the country. If you're fastidious about it, you can become an owner/operator by your third year and start actually /seeing/ the country with the freedom to choose your own loads/schedule and have the money to actually afford transportation off of truck routes.

University of Washington is a top school. In fact, I don't think a single one of the US schools in that chart isn't in the top 20. Mediocre means somewhere around the 100th mark rank.
>>
>>15375022
>Most of the ME/SE/AE graduates at my school were hired as engineers
>UCSD
>in socal cal poly, ucsd, and sdsu have 80% engineering placement.
wow, what a surprise. your experience is solely with top technical schools, and in california at that which probably has more technology related jobs than the rest of US.

now imagine that, top technology schools, in the best state to apply for technology related jobs, have 80% placement. now what do you think the placement will be in a place like illinois from a school that has triple digit overall ranking and fifty something ranking for engineering majors?

i haven't met anyone at my school that got a job through a career fair. most of the representatives don't even have full time positions available and just tell you to apply online. they probably only come to the fair to not sit in the office and make calls that day. it wasn't until i couldn't find a job that i realized how much better the career/job seeking resources at other universities were. by comparison my university is just a degree mill where they couldn't give a fuck less what you do after you graduate.

in the end, i'm not blaming anyone but myself. i certainly didn't do enough research before entering college, but that was largely due to originally not wanting to go to college. everyone: high school counselors, teachers, and my parents pushed me so i picked a cheap local school that offered a major i found interesting and figured things will work out. in reality, i should have stuck to my guns and gone either into a trade (trucking or welding) or enlisted in the military. now i have completed 7 years of college, i'm making ~25k/year, and don't even have a clear due date for graduating from the shitty phd program. needless to say, i made very poor decisions.

Recommend Endless Duel for SNES or Gihren's Greed if you like strategy games. My personal favorites are Battle Master/Battle Assault 1 and 2 on PSX (based on a DBZ fighter for SNES that was based on Street Fighter), and the VS series on PS2-PS3. If you can emulate PS2 on that thing, I'd recommend Federation VS Zeon or Gundam VS Zeta Gundam, for arcade kicks, or Zeonic Front for a squad shooter, Battle Assault 3 for an arcade fighter, Encounters In Space for glorious space battles.
>>
>>15382630
I prefer the games along the lines of Zeonic Front. Probably the best game I played on PS2.
>>
>>15382687
Sadly the closest thing to another Zeonic Front is Crossfire for PS3, and it's an absolute shit game. There's Sidestory 0079 for Dreamcast, but that's a bit more Mechwarrior style. If you ever have a PS3 on hand and want a hectic fun brawler, Gundam Extreme VS Full Burst is the latest title in the VS line. It's wild. I imported the first Extreme VS.

Honestly, the first time I went to college, back in the '00's, I had no clue what I was doing, and it took me 15 years to put my life back in order to go to college for real, with a practical game plan.

If it makes you feel any better, if you had gone to a trade school with the same attitude and level of preparation/research, the outcome would have been just as bad or worse.

The community college where I got my AA had an attached trade school. They're still pushing all their students into:
* Airplane mechanic
> Was good 5 years ago, now all the airlines fly their jets overseas to be serviced for pennies on the dollar, and all the US jet mechanics are either going on unemployment, or fighting for jobs servicing private piston-engine planes at local airstrips for Jiffy-lube-tier wages.
* LPN nursing
> Literally unemployable in the modern era, every modern healthcare facility requires RN/BSN minimum these days
* Auto Mechanic
> Change brake pads on Camrys for $10/hr for the rest of your life!

Statistically speaking, trade school outcomes are worse than liberal arts degrees. Pick the right trade and the right school, you might do ok, but on the whole if you just dive in and take the path of least resistance, you're fucked.

>>15382519
>University of Washington is a top school.

Maybe to people who aren't from here. In the Seattle area, it's just the cheap local public university that all the community college grads get guaranteed admission to. Locals with serious academic aspirations go to WSU or Western. Gonzaga if they have the money for a private school.

It sure as hell isn't ivy-league tier, and doesn't carry much prestige in the way that the big-name private schools do.
