Alone the fact that this is a tv show marketed at new and future driver that promotes illegal street racing and shows actual racing techniques still blows my mind. Only in japan is this possible.
First season is actually good. It's got massive buildups to the races and shows the hero's private life outside of racing too, which is actually less bad than it sounds. It's a coming-of-age-story in that regard. The first actual race comes in at episode four, but there are bits of fast touge driving thrown in in every episode.
The other seasons never gripped me as much, but I watched them anyway since I got addicted to Eurobeat along the way.

It does, but it shows the side of it that most fiction doesn't focus on. Stuff like Wangan Midnight and etc is all about going super fast on public highways and how the police cars are governed so they can't even catch up, etc. Initial D is about having fun with your friends on deserted mountain roads throwing your asthmatic shitboxes into the corners and skidding around because you can't afford new tires.

If you knew nothing about cars at all, this show would teach you how they can be fun, how driving a car properly goes much deeper than getting a license and probably make you a car guy or even a racing nut. The really crazy thing a bout it is that this 90s cartoon show originally aimed at high schoolers is way more realistic about car behavior, driving technique, car maintenance and everyday life than most movies aimed at a wide audience.

Would recommend if you got the interest in driving technicalities and patience.
From a plot point of view, First Stage is extremely slow-paced. I blame the fact that it was the first season and also had some generic 90s antics. You have to brave about five episodes before you get to the first important race.
You'll also have to forgive First Stage for trying to incorporate a love scenario. It just overall didn't fit into the series and served only one motivational purpose to the protagonist. After that one moment has gone, they just kinda tossed it out the window until Fourth Stage when things get REALLY DRAMATIC.
But if you're in it for JDM cars, drifting, banging music that you'd want to hear in your car but not other cars (second-hand embarrassment), and driving development, then this is the anime for you.
Just be ready for N64-tier CGI. Also you should try out their racing games if you really get into it.

The character designs and car animation get better as the series progresses. Some details are different from the manga. If you're looking to buy the series (a strange cocnept to some these days), the Funimation dub is not bad. Only reason to pickup the shit-tier Tokyopop release is because the Japanese audio is in 5.1 surround sound (the Funi release has it in conventional two channel stereo). Fifth Stage, Final stage, and the three movies have not been licensed yet, no word on if that will ever happen.
