>The Hawaii Board of Land and Natural Resources had issued a building permit for the Thirty Meter Telescope, but had not held a hearing on the issue that would have allowed Hawaiians to contest it, the court ruled. As a result, the Board will have to have a contested case hearing in order to re-issue the permit, and expect Hawaiians to show up in force — they are not happy about a proposal to build a huge telescope on the top of Mauna Kea, which is the highest point in Hawaii.
I don't understand the uproar. Aren't there already several telescopes on Mauna Kea? Why are people upset about one more?

Muh environment

nope, it has to do with the mountain being the home of some ancient Hawaiian goddess of fire or something like that. The natives are mad that they are building on sacred land.
Here's a slightly older article from before the ruling was finalized:

Do any of the natives even fucking care about their old beliefs anymore?

The old ways is all they have. It's why all the Mexicans are super (if borderline heretical) Catholic and all Blacks are thug life.
Hawaii has a supreme court?

Christians don't really have Holy Land beyond that of 'The Holy Land' and they're cool with building shit there.
So different situation tbh

no, they just like trolling whitey because they're pissed off we stole their land.
Which we did, but they should really get over it already tbh

There's already like 8 up there....

Telescope puts further sanctions and occupies land that are inaccessible to the native people. Not profitable for anyone either other than star-gazing which they could just choose another mountain if they wish. Somewhere other than Hawaii.
>>6802
"Star-gazing" isn't the whole truth as to why it's being put there. Telescopes are our only way right now to get actual data about space, since we can't go out to the stars yet to look at them close-up. Further, the reason that they can't move to another mountain is because Mauna Kea has certain geological advantages that make it almost perfect for telescopes.
