This group of poor Londoners is probably getting pushed on but don't pretend it is the simply immigration that is pushing poor people out of London. This is done by the developers, bankers, businesses and so on all try to create a neo-liberal city (i.e. a playground for the richest people in society that attempts to exclude the poor). It just happens that there is a push against the poor whites not just from the above but below as well.

The majority of workers in the neighborhood were dock workers. The dock work dramatically slowed in the 80s cause mass unemployment. by the end of the 80s Thatcher had gone to war with labor and won. This only continued in the 90s when Blair followed Clinton in neo liberal policies and Cameron was right on Blair's heels. London's economy relies on finance and real estate as well as shit as bottom tier service jobs. Leaving very little for the blue collar workers (that no one seemed to give a fuck about for the past 20 odd years). With the disintegration of work it appears many of the young blue collar workers left (the article doesn't say where or why most went) and the (not yet gentrified) space is being filled up by a Muslim population. Who seem to be creating something similar to a Chinatown.

It seems you have mixed up what came first cockney flight or immigration. It seems that flight came first and then possibly amplified by the immigration.

It sucks these poor blue collar workers lost their space, their jobs, and have had to migrate outwards. The biggest problem with globalization is that the companies and the government do fuck all to help those who are victims of a post-industrial economy where local labor in developed countries can't compete with undeveloped countries and housing prices must continue to rise and service jobs don't pay enough to survive.

But it seems (especially on /news/) there is often a hatred of the poor and of those without stem degrees it will take a serious shift for anyone to give a fuck about the workers themselves. I mean do most of the people in this thread actually care about the cockney workers or are they just happy to find a reason to be upset with the immigrants? Where is the hatred of the Olympics for gentriying other parts of the east end and pushing out the poor blue collar workers?

I don't think immigration or asylum seekers would be as big of a worry if those in the middle and working class saw their future as secure. But free-trade, finance, real estate, and the loss of manufacturing has made the future more insecure and anyone coming in is viewed as a threat.

Most wealthy people of either party probably don't see immigration as s threat because their futures are more secure (stock piles of money and property or a job that few people are qualified for).

Even if the immigrants vanished tomorrow life would still be difficult for the workers in London and they still be pushed out. Factories have moved to increase profit (not create but increase, but "it is their right to go where they can make the most profit"), real estate and rent have become unaffordable for all but those in the upper-middle and upper class, financial services create vast amounts of wealth for the very few, and blue collar workers are left behind and offered the chance bag groceries or drive for stupid urber. Furthermore the businesses and politicians (right and left) do everything they can to push the poor from the city. Businesses want rich customers and cities need to attract high level businesses an easy way to do this is through gentrification and zero tolerance policing (broken windows don't create violent crime, but they do reduce investment).

Really, what London look like if the public housing wasn't privatized? If Thatcher hadnt throughly beaten labor? If the neo-liberal policies hadn't been introduced? What would it look like if the poor/working class weren't demonized by both parties? Dumb liberals write off the working class as racist and dumb conservatives scream about personal responsibility and not being trained in a specific skill (ignoring how businesses--on some level--used to train people for their jobs and didn't expect workers to go into debt for the chance of possibly finding a job).
