What gear ratio do you usually ride in on flats? I usually ride in 48-11 on flats. Also my bike is a hybrid and my longest ride on it is around 200km. My average speed on long rides is mid teens mph/mid twenties kph and on short rides (i.e. under 90km) is high teens mph/high twenties-30 kph. Post your stats, let's see how we compare.
>>
depends how straight i ride, between 53:19 and 53:14
>>
>>954500
my single speed has a 46-16 ratio, I find it suitable everywhere except the mountains.

flatland speed usually averages about 26 km/h.. pretty slow

>>
Road cyclist, 53-17 is my middle 'cruising' gear that I can pedal comfortably pretty much forever on a flat surface. I rode a century last week and averaged 18.5 mph.

>>954508
52-14, because smaller cogs wear out faster
>>
>>954540
>52-14, because smaller cogs wear out faster
but wearing out cogs means wearing down the teeth which means material being shaved off the teeth meaning LESS GRAMS
>replacing your worn drivetrain components
>EVER
>not enjoying the grams savings of worn components
Filthy casuals when will they learn?
>>
>>954547
>but wearing out cogs means wearing down the teeth which means material being shaved off the teeth meaning LESS GRAMS
more friction loss means less efficiency

b-b-but MUH GRAMS

53-19 is pretty good for flats depending on turns and how many slow downs I have. Thing is, ho often is it actually flat or in a straight line? I hit a lot of bike paths and its almost always curvy just for the sake of being curvy, Then I get on roads and within a mile it seems like there is a stop sign, red light, or some other reason to slow down.

Pushing a stupidly high gear at a low cadence doesn't make you any better than someone else, in fact it makes you an idiot. 53:19 at 90rpm on 700c wheels is about 20mph, I wouldn't call that casual.

Judging someone based solely on gear ratio is stupid, like calling someone fat because they weigh 90kg but you have no idea how tall or muscular they are.

And 41-11 is less GRAMs to begin with
Saves 40g thru chainrings and 50g thru cassette! Not to mention the shorter chain!

Pic related. Yes I'm a midget
>>
>>954592

I can hit about 40 mph with a 53x11 on the flats with my road bike. I can hold this for a few miles before I burn out. I always end up running out of gearing with a 46t when in route to the trails.. I understand you think you are some eilte rider that 'knows' everything about biking but I think you are just weak as fuck.
>>
50/34 compact
good all around ratio
>>
>>954608
Only if you're single speed faggot fuck downtube, your grams are still there even for the sprockets you dont currently use

>>954634
Calling your shit-tier gear ratio casual makes me weak as fuck? lol okay champ whatever you say
>>954637
This thread is for gear ratio not for what chainrings you have on your chainset
>>
>>954500

>48-11
>20-30kph

You're pedaling a 40-50 cadence?
Why don't you shift?
>>
>>954652
thats part of my point you downtuber
a 41-34 chainring will be lighter than a 52-36
and a 11-25 will be lighter than a 14-28
>>
>>954661
yeah but if you have a 52-36 chainset and a 11-50 cog cassette and you ride in doesnt matter weight wise if you ride in 52/26 or 36/18 (same ratio) cause the weight is still there for all parts EXCEPT riding in 36/18 is faster BECAUSE those ratio wear out components FAST so you lose grams from tooth wearout

Yea, sure hun.
>>
>>954500
39-26 front, 11-26 rear. I usually cruise at 25-30km/h. My gearing is sufficient up to ~44km/h, where I spin out.
>>
>>954500
>48-11 on flats
>15mph average speed
So you're riding for hours turning the cranks at 50rpm?
>MY SIDES, EXPLODING
Fucking casuals and your NO CADENCE.
If you're not spinning at LEAST 90rpm, you're a filthy casual. No wonder you casuals never improve.
>>954500
>Post your stats, let's see how we compare.
I spin 90-95rpm most of the time, except when climbing, and on the flat my average speed is between 18 and 21mph. Get on my level.
>you can't can you?
>>
>>954634
>I can hold this for a few miles before I burn out
Yeah sure you can kid, how steep was the descent? 8%? 10%?

Excuse me while I go put on some hip waders, the bullshit in this thread is getting way too deep.

That's a bike designed specifically to draft behind a motorized pace vehicle for a very specific kind of race that is no longer done
>>
50x18 or 50x19 for my usual flat cruising at ~35kph depending on wind. If I drop below 31kph I switch to my 34 frontring to get into more comfortable 1 tooth varying gears for that speed. 50/34 is quite an akward combo because around 30-31kph you cant help but corsschaining. Although if I had a 53/39 I would probably spend all my time on the 39 so I guess its better this way.
>>
One of my bikes has a 50/34 and 11-28 cassette, the other has a 52/39/30 and an 11-32. On both of them, I mostly cruise in the 14t cog. Good for somewhere in the 20-25mph range.

I'd like to have a 26" hybrid with 50-35 chainrings and Sram 10-50 cassette. And maybe a 200 mm disc in front and rear if it fits. Would look hilarious.

Back to topic. I cruise usually so that cadence is less than 80 if im going slow like low 20's. At faster rides i ride closer to 30 km/h with cadence over 90. Exact gear ratios depend on the bike. Different wheel sizes, cahainrings and casettes you know.
>>
>>954722
They do have something like that on the track. Keirin or whatever.
>>
>>954606
I think he's implying
>crosschaining
>>
>>954760
The other options are 34:12 or 39:14, both could also be considered cross chaining. If that's the ratio the guy needs then so be it, there's nothing really wrong with cross chaining even at the extremes (which 53:19 isn't).
>>
>>954760
Except I'm really not cross chaining to terribly bad. I have a 12-30 cassette and 19 lands almost center. I do cruise about 20ish in that gear

The number of people in this thread that are NOT mentioning their cadence is disturbing.

And OP, telling your legs to shut up doesn't mean flogging away with your joints like that. Downshift and spin.

Do you seriously think about this while riding a bike? Do you also worry about how many nanograms of rubber come off the tire with each revolution?
