Not if it would interfere with the disc caliper, so for a disc brake bike the drive side is generally acceptable. Front looks like it'd sit better folded up along the front edge of the fork blade though.

it rides alright, rolls fast, as it's about 14-15kg, but climbing isn't that great but mostly as i'm pushing 300lb and it's got a 66 degree HA, changing my 32t ring to a 38t makes it so much better for a runaround, really want to get a surly 1x1 fork as it's half the weight of the XC28 and should make the front end a little nimbler, but even now it's pretty agile and loves to be thrown in to corners.
the tyres i was looking at were kojaks, thickslicks, and geax boozes, but went for the tattoos as planetX had them for £4 each and they looked like they'd work ok on my turbo trainer.

Bought it about 3 months ago for 200€, was 350€ new in 2012. Guy put more or less just 1000km through it so it's still pretty much new, put some new rubber on it as the original one was atrocious. It's my first bike after not riding anything since I was a little kid, been enjoying it a lot so far!

Suntour XCR up front (actually pretty nice for a cheap fork), 19mm wide alloy rims (pig ugly but sturdy according to reviews), Continental Race Kings 2.2 ProTection front and rear (they roll crazy fast), SRAM X5 on the rear and the achilles heel of the whole thing on the front derailer: a fucking shimano tourney. Brakes are Tektro IO mechanical discs, a complete bitch to keep adjusted but pretty nice brakes.
All in all I'm VERY happy with it, been running easy trails and a lot of city stuff with it and I'm having a blast - will eventually take it to harder trails as soon as I feel I'm ready, only real issue is the front derailer which is horrible, but at least it's pretty much the least important part of the bike.

I haven't had to adjust it at all after setting it up, save for the odd turn of a barrel adjuster here and there. I've got some poor quality brake housing so I'm dead sure with some compressionless housing it'd be near hydro level.

Agreed with the range tidbit. It was fun while it lasted, but having 36x44 as my smallest gear gets pretty tough after a long ride and you're nearly gassed. I've got a 36/46 double that'll be right at home on this beast. Coupled with the 11-36 currently on it, that aught to prove enough range for touring and general riding around where I am with some real sharp rollers.

If that is the current condition of the bike it doesn't really need much more than a wipedown with a towel. The components look well maintained and adjusted.
A Charge Spoon might be a decent saddle choice. They are popular, though I have no personal experience with them.
An Origin8 saddle might be another good choice. I've clocked up a lot of miles with one on my beater and have no complaints.

Not the guy you're replying to, but I have the Spyre calipers on one of my bikes and the Hylex calipers on another, so I thought I'd chime in:
The Spyres are perfectly adequate. Definitely better than single piston cable-pull calipers like BB7s; much less finicky to set up. If you want to stick with the familiarity of cable-pull brakes (or still want to use STI levers), they're a great choice.
The Hylex brakes are mind blowing; incredibly good. Very little effort; I can stop quickly with one finger on the lever with very little effort and great modulation. The extra-long hoods feel great in the hand. They're way, way better than the hydros I have on my mountain bike (admittedly old Shimano M966 units). HIGHLY recommended. The only downside is now you're stuck with bar-end or downtube shifters... Other options exist but are not readily available yet.
(Gevenalle is doing a run of them modified with their bar-end shifter mount on the lever, but they've been out of stock for months. TRP themselves are also doing a Di2 button mount)

Weird, I would've thought you'd be after more on the high end. My new bike has 34:28 as the lowest which is nearly the same as yours, coming from much lower geared MTBs I didn't think it'd be enough but it's been fine so far even on really steep hills and it's so slow on flat ground it's so slow that I wouldn't want to go lower no matter how tired I was. That said my bike is probably a fair bit lighter than yours especially once yours is loaded.
I've been considering going 1x for the simplicity and weight drop but likewise the range wouldn't be enough, however for me it'd leave me spinning out on some of the bigger hills near me. I think my current gearing is perhaps a bit too high (53:11), but even taking a bit off the top end I think I'd probably still need an 11 speed MTB cassette to get the range I'd want.

Close, it's a Nashbar Signature 853 frame, sold for a very short amount of time in 2006. Very similar to the Salsa Ala Carte of the same timeframe; it was a complete steal. Actually a really, really nice hardtail frame!
The stem is an Ergotech High Charisma. Hard to get in the US, mostly only available in Europe. VO might start importing them, though.

I have a pair for my 29 if I need a spare bike for riding around the city with friends. I can confirm that the deluxe puncture guard versions are the shit. I have probably about 2k miles on mine and no flats. They have a wire bead though, which makes switching them out a huge pain in the ass. I think If I had to purchase another pair I would go with the schwalbe big apple just for the ease of changing. If it was a dedicated city cruiser I would stick with the thickslicks.

The issue is there are a ton of gradual rollers with a random 10%+ gradient out of nowhere in the middle of the rest, and I'm a heavy fuck. Add on some extra weight from being loaded with a few things, and I absolutely need the lower range.
Going absolutely fast isn't the prime goal of that bike either. If I can spin out 46/11 on a downhill, I'm probably better off simply tucking and taking a break. That being said I also have a 40t narrow wide and found it too restricting for distance riding. If it were a townie bike, 40x11-36 would be perfect. Enough low end to make it up most sharp inclines and a reasonable cruising range within town. If I had one of the new mtb 1x drivetrains with that fuckhuge 10-42 cassette, than it might be a different story. I love 1x for how dirt simple it is and am building up a beater townie ride that will definitely be 1x

Ordered some hydros to replace the crappy BB5s. Next up is bar ends, straight seatpost, and maybe a slightly shorter stem. Would like to go 1x but I'd need to switch to 10 speed to get the range I'd like and that's a lot of components to replace.

I only really flipped the stem as I like the look of it being close to level, the height change from doing so wasn't much. I'd probably be fine if I removed some spacers but I just don't feel like cutting the steerer. Ideally it'd just have a longer head tube, it's quite a bit shorter than drop bar frames.
Current drivetrain is 2x9, so I'd need a new cassette, derailer, shifter, chain, and a chainring as well as I'd want a 43/44t.

It's not about the largest cog, it's the lack of range. I could always get an 11-34t 9 speed cassette and my derailer would probably take it, but I wouldn't settle for anything less than 11-36t and that means going 10 speed.

I have a 36t 9 speed... they do exist. But if that's the bottom of your range then yeah maybe go full 1x $$$
I tried out a 1x touring set up with a 11-36t 9 speed cassette + 36t chainring. The gear inches range was something like 22 - 70
It worked pretty well for a loaded ride on flat land, but I was missing the high end and would definitely miss the low end if there were hills.

What 11-36t 9 speed cassette do you have? Apparently Sunrace has one but not in stock on Amazon (don't even know if it'd fit my freehub).
The other option would be to DIY one (12-36 and then replace the 12 for an 11) but I have no idea how well that'd work, there's gotta be a reason why no one makes one.

I was really dissappointed by the tires in this picture. I wanted highly puncture proof and idiot proof tires and these have sure met my criteria so far. But fuck me I never even considered the added weight they bring and where that weight goes exactly and how it affects everything. The weight goes to the worst possible place. Half a kilo per tire difference is so fuking dramatic that it made a significant dent to the joy of riding.
Just fuck my shit I'm going back to my 29x1.7 specialized fatboy slicks. They might explode from the ocassional gravel route, but atleast I have some stans tubeless liquid stuff inside my tubes.

Ah sick. Should've noticed as I have the KS i950. Performs well.. but had some reliability issues with the first 2 or 3 I had. Got warranty replacement once each and paid bike shop cost after that. The only reason a dropper won't be amazing for you is if you ride only road, only flat stuff, or only slow and unggressively. You need your seat post high for climbing, and low and out of the way for any gnarly descending. I like to practice trials a bunch too which is stupid to do with a seat up your ass. Droppers = flow.

What's your bike?
I'm the guy with the white bike wanting to go 1x. I remembered earlier that I've got a spare Alfine 11 on a 700c rim. I'm gonna give that a go, with just one chainring it'll actually give me pretty the same range as my current 2x9 setup.
The weight difference also shouldn't be too great, although the wheel itself is heavier I'll be ditching two derailers (might get lucky and not have to use a chain tensioner, if I do they're not very heavy), one shifter, and one chainring. Could even end up being slightly lighter.

Dunno if you've ever worked on one but it's a major ball ache, it has a weird snap ring holding it on instead of a lock ring. I've gotta change it out anyway from 18t to 16t, that way I can use a 42t chainring instead of 47t (if such a thing exists).

Any trail with any sort of descending/very irregular section will benefit from a dropper. Pretty much any time you have to get off the saddle and maneuver is a time where a dropper would make you much faster.

Just stick with the Fatboys. I've got a set on this beast and they've been pretty stellar. Assuming you don't pump them up incredibly high you aught to be good against most punctures as the tire can simply deform over the offending piece of whatever you happen to roll over, instead of going through the rock hard tire.
Just added a 9point8 dropper (150mm) and a '14 Fox Factory 34 Float (140mm). Very happy!

Holding the bar right by the stem, or resting your forearms there and holding pretend aerobars are good positions so i don't like em, but your bike is -just- old enough to sort of suit them. It's kind of dumb to add weight up high when you can easily have it lower though. Higher center of gravity on a bike is bad. You probably could put the pump behind the seat tube. If you can't, atleast put it infront of the seat tube. Having your sole bottle cage on the seat tube is a CX thing that makes shouldering the bike easier, so unless you're carrying it up flights of stairs on the reg there's no reason to have that orientation. Bottles on the downtube are much much easier to reach while riding. If you got fenders you could put a cage under the downtube.

Rough roads and gravel are cause of the million little holes, but the leaking from between the rim and tire I figured is caused because the fatboy is a ridgit, not a foldable tire. It sits there well, but not perfectly so it leaks. I even added more sealant after a while, but after almost 2 months of daily pumping, I finally gave up and installed tubes.

Try dropping it a little bit. I'm pretty heavy and I run mine at ~50psi rear 40psi front without too much complaint. I've rolled on gravel roads and over glass on my commute for the past two weeks straight without issue. It's pretty unfortunate that they haven't worked for you as I love mine.Perhaps adding slime to the tubes like you mentioned would help.

The front rack is for most of the kit. Rear would be for carrying a tent/mat or some panniers loaded with lightweight items, it's not intended for a huge amount of weight.
It'll take two rear panniers quite easily either way.

Building this... Thing. 14" Raleigh M40 frame, 1x8SRAM x5, 26" rear, 29" front, 120mm travel 29er fork. It'll have Promax Decipher hydro brakes (meh, but free and not awful).
I just need to bolt up the rest of the bits and run the cables, and it'll be rolling. I'll probably put a 26er front wheel, just because the BB is so damn high with the 29er.

..listen, buddy, I don't know who you are or what kind of cycling you do. Me, I'm a road cyclist on a local team. I train 6 days a week, and in a normal week the 7th day is in the gym doing core strengthening. Yesterday I did 30 minutes continuous at Threshold, a new PR for me. Looking at doing a TT this year, for the first time since I got hurt a few years back, and I think I can win one, or at least place in the top 5. Not bragging, just establishing who I am and what I'm about. Long rides at Threshold are no picnic.
There are two kinds of cyclists: Competitors, and everyone else. I don't care what kind of bike we're talking about, or what terrain you ride on, or how many days or how many miles a week, everyone falls into one of those two categories. The riders who are not competitors? They'll back off if it's starting to get uncomfortable. Why? Because they have *no reason* to push themselves that hard. In terms of training zones, if they push past Endurance and into Tempo or beyond, they won't stay there for more than a very short amount of time before backing off, because it's *uncomfortable* for them, and they don't feel the need to go that fast.
Competitors? They aren't pushing themselves to the point of it being abject suffering for no good reason, they know that on the other side of that suffering, there are *gains*. They know that as the mesocycles go by, they'll be able to go a little faster and a little longer because of that suffering, and they know that from those gains, comes getting that much closer to winning races, or that town-line sprint, or being first to the top of that big climb on the weekly fast group ride, or whatever it is that, for them, translates into 'competition'. Usually it's about some race or another, but it can even mean being the first to the top of that one big climb on the weekly group ride, or just beating your own PR on a set course you ride alone every week. There's a challenge, and they feel the need to meet it.

They were off my 26" trek i had set up as ss. I just swapped the stock crankset and made it ss so i could still jib around on the trek. I definitely notice the lack of flickability in the 29er. I come from a bmx background so i like riding my mtbs with some bmx flair. I also work at a lbs so paying cost and no labor is a plus for experimenting. Yes the stems slammed but im also a 5'6 manlet. Still experimenting and just threw on parts i had.

Would need to have a 42t at most, ideally 41t but if that doesn't exist then 40 or 39. That'd work fine for the low end but would leave me spinning out on some of the big hills, not a huge deal but I find it fun going really fast.
Any way, I've got all the parts needs to switch over to my Alfine 11 now. That'll end up giving me pretty much the same range as my current 2x9 setup, a slight bit more on the low and high ends.
Will be doing the swap over the weekend. I've also changed the brakes to M615s so once it's done I'll be SRAM free.

This bike was my first experience with SRAM. The drive train actually seemed pretty good although I'm looking forward to going back to my Alfine shifter as the upper lever can be pushed both ways (SRAM probably has that too on their newer or higher end shifters).
The BB5 brakes though were complete shit. Never tried their hydros although I've heard bad things about them, all the Shimanos I've had have been decent.

I've been rocking a Dajia rear rack, available from Velo-Orange, for a couple of years. Looks good, can hold quite a bit of weight, and isn't too pricey (about $95).
The Planet Bike Koko Cargo is nice as well. I installed one on a friend's bike. It is rated for the same amount of weight, but is substantially cheaper (about $30).
