My friend is looking to spend $500 on a bike. I keep telling him to find someone on Craigslist, he insist on buying something new. He likes Diamondback.
I tell him a brand new bike for $500 is gonna have shit components, he doesnt think it will mater.
He will use this to ride like 1.5 miles to work, occasional recreational riding, and whatever else. He lives in the boonies, mostly farm roads, small towns.
I already recommend a single speed/fixie type. He does not like road bikes. He is most familar with mountain bike type.
What's a good brand new bike brand/model to look at?
bikesdirect.com/products/gravity/g29ss.htm
and buy road tires

Thanks.
What are the downsides to disc brakes?

For that usage at least, I guess they're slightly more expensive..?
The discs on that bike are pretty low end and will need more regular tuning than most. Buying some higher end discs would still be under $500 though.

Thanks. I gave him my thing about all that.
Thanks for the website, I couldnt remember the site.
I myself almost bought a Moto ti frame bike year ago, but didnt.

No problem. Oh also discs make installing fenders/racks a pain sometimes, although perhaps your friend may not be interested in those.

Then he's a fucktard. Tell him that he's a fucktard and stop trying to help him. There is literally not a single bike on the market that retails for under $500 that isn't pure shit. You have to spend at least $700 if buying new.

90s rigid mountain bike from Craigslist. If he has a problem with that he can go fuck himself or pay $1k+ for something new.

Some shops only sell the disc brake racks, since those racks work on non-disc bikes too.
