DAILY REMINDER:

OPs who post 'post Freds' threads are jealous poorfag haters. Potentially skeezy useless self-loathing NEETs, stuck with their thrift-store beater tenspeed held together with duct tape and bailing wire, suffering in regular street clothes or ill-fitting gym clothes, and being weak skellingtons with no legs, they get passed on climbs by middle-aged guys with 30% bodyfat, and they HATE, HATE, HATE on them.

Don't be like the OP. It's a pointless negative-sum game.

This thread seems like the right place to confess - I do actually own one pro-team replica jersey, and it's in the regular rotation of what I wear.

In my defense, I'm skinny, fast, and I actually like the jersey because I'm a Piet Mondrian fan - not because I care about emulating pro riders. Can I be excused or am I doomed to be considered a fred?

A fred is someone who does not follow cycling conventions. The people who call other people freds are actually closer to what fred originally meant. The evolution of fred went like so. Back when there were only 4 kinds of cyclists, club/road cyclists, commuter/utility cyclists, children, and freds(unconventional cyclists). Club/road would call freds, fred. Not understanding the nuance of cycling club slang, freds started calling anyone on a bike they didn't like a fred, because they assumed fred was just an insult for someone they didn't like on a bike. Then MTB and BMX came into existence, and killed cycling norms and 'proper' cycling tradition, making the road/club usage less meaningful. When fixiefags came out, they were into that bohemian chic, so they picked up on the fred usage of fred, and everyone they didn't like was the people with nice bikes, try hards, and 'establishment' cycling culture which basically meant road/club riders. So fred started to be used to refer to road/club cyclists.

So basically fred means the opposite of what it used to mean. It basically means "cyclist who is doing it wrong"

A dentist is a rich person that buys expensive equipment but rides casually. Dentists have lots of time off, unlike other high paying professions, so they have time to ride, and they also are fairly affluent, so they can afford nice things.
>>

>>921805
doesn't your saddle catch the crotch of your shorts or ram your nads when you go from standing to sitting
>>
>>922112
Fred being used as an insult supposedly came from a bunch of tour de france jerks getting pissed that a beardy weirdo on a loaded touring bike passed them with ease on a tough climb. that weirdo's name was Fred.
>>
>>922372
Except that's a made up story, it's not in Fred's memoirs. People claiming this story will claim it's "well known" and he wrote about it, but fail to come up with citations. It only exists to make freds feel better about themselves and deal with their inferiority complex. Most freds have never actually even been called a fred, at least not in an earshot. They just feel very insecure and project what they think those nasty roadies are saying. Incidentally, they also project why they think those roadies are freds and unworthy of their bikes. The fantasy of passing up roadies on an old beat up heavy bike is a common trope among freds. You still see freds claiming they passed a "fred" (roadie) and brag about it and call the "fred" stupid. These claims are generally false, or have some other explanation, like passing a retiree, or someone on a recovery ride.
>>
I honestly dont get the problem.
They are fat? Well that's why they are in a fucking bike, to lose weight, they are already doing much more than many other fatties
They are wearing official team equipment? So what, they paid for it, if somebody plays football with a rmadrid or a man united t shirt nobody bats an eye, however this is cycling so they are all stupid cunts for wearing a team maillot?

>mfw I ride my road bike to the beach every other morning before the work traffic starts (like 6-8am depending on if it's a week day or not)
>start seeing other bikers, first just couples riding their mountain bikes (on the path, which triggers me) for exercise, say hello when we cross each other
>then I see a couple of blokes on their road bikes coming the other way, get intimidated but nod at them
>then when I'm 15 seconds from home, I see a group of 6-7, women included, coming down the main road

They all nodded and waved but I feel really self conscious when I see other road bikers. I wear bike gear (shorts and jersey) that's just cheap with a small logo, no BMC or Sky branding (only thing of that I have is a sky water bottle because it matches my bike colour and was on special for like £2)

My only issue is I still use flat pedals (and straps/clips), and don't really want to upgrade to clipless because I don't ride competitively, I like being able to walk around (even if it's with my bike, since I don't trust locking it up normally), and I don't trust myself to set up the pedals right and don't want to give myself a limp or some daft shit because my toes were pointed in too much.

What should I do regarding my pedal/shoe situation?

You shouldn't care at all. You don't have to be the fastest rider if you don't want to be. That sort of pressure is how the bike industry sells people on very expensive gear they don't need.

I ride a hybrid bike often with a rack in bike gear and nod/say hello/alright to other cyclists and get nods and hellos back.

>tfw a club ride goes past me and I have to nod and say hello to everyone I go past

Never say hello to joggers though, joggers are cunts and never say hello back.

>national champion jersey

get fucked

team kit is one thing, but race classification / champion jerseys are 100% bullshit
>>
>>928043
thanks for your opinion
>>
>>928043
Me not being able to show my support for Sagan is bullshit
>>
>>928043
Nah, only if you look like you may have won it at some point in the recent past.
>>
>>921394
Imagine that, someone on 4chan/n who is honest about the subject.

>>921491
..and then there's this fuck, who is so in denial that it hurts just to read his post. Sure thing buddy, enjoy your 40 year old rusted-out thrift store bike, held together by duct tape, bailing wire, chewing gum, and lubed with used motor oil you stole from the back porch of the Jiffy Lube down the street from you. Just keep telling yourself you're more legit than they are, you might actually fool yourself.

>>921360
The only way I'll tolerate this 'Fred' crap on /n/ is if you're talking about the following:
o High-end racing bike
o Wears replica pro-team kit
o Not only doesn't ride fast, isn't capable of riding fast
o Sure as fuck doesn't race, ever
o 'Just rides'
o Is visibly overweight/out of shape
If you post anything that doesn't meet ALL the above criteria, then you're just a jelly poorfag hating on people who can afford nicer things than you have and should STFU.
>>
>>930089
>The faster you go, the more acceptable it is to wear team kit
You've got it almost exactly wrong. The second fastest guy in the world is the last guy who should be wearing WC stripes.

desu those guys probably ride more than people on this board

There are some guys that look like that in club and they can actually be pretty fast. Not racer fast, but no slackers.
>>
>>924834
Hey there fellow flip. I haven't really encountered people wearing UCI champ jerseys or what have yous (Then again, I don't really ride THAT much)

But don't forget those guys who buy unbranded carbon frames + carbon deep section wheels and then place decals on them to make them look 'authentic'.
>>
>>921379
this one is hilarious xD
>>
>>933136
Why? Guy might be having joint problems, which preclude him from using clips. Especially road ones.

The fact that he is overweight might be a reason why he is having joint problems.
>>
>>921374
The appalling thing is that you know he still has them up, despite being stripped of every single one

I want to fucking strangle Lance Armstrong until he breathes no more

Seriously
>>
>>921377
The guy at the front is a Fred. The guy smoking is a lad.
>>
>>921491
Except that riding is a top-end bike is fucking amazing. Feels like having sex. I have a shitty old steel bike which is rusting, has shitty single pivot brakes, the gears don't work, the stem is corroded into place slightly out of alignment. So when I got to ride a full carbon bike with clip in pedals it was FUCKING. INSANE.
>>
>>926612
Definitely wear it. Sagan is a fucking amazing rider. 99% of people won't even know where that jersey's from and the other 1% may even buy you a beer for being so fucking cool.

>>928043
>mad as fuck
>>
>>924834
Where do you live? I'm technically allowed to get a Philippine passport and sometimes I think about moving "home" even though I haven't been there in decades. Am I going to get kidnapped and murdered if I ride a nice bike wearing kit?

Do what you like, clipless pedals and even clips are useless for casual riders and their usefulness for competitive rider comes from stability only.

Clipless/clipped pedals do not help you generate more power or ride faster.
>>
>>933319
>this what plebs actually believe
>probably will try to strawman about pulling on the pedals and cite that site about mtbs and grant
>>
>>933320
They are useless. Plain and simple. There is absolutely no reason that a casual cyclist (and by that I mean someone who is not making money by riding) needs or should want clipless pedals. The benefits are marginal at best and they add unnecessary cost and complication to riding.
>>
>>926384
you should kill yourself because you're an autist who worries about tiny details in the fabric of your life. just buy them and spend time learn a new skill or save your cash and enjoy what you have you cucklord

I bet I can pull up harder with my "pinned meme pedals" than you can on clipless. Clipless pedals make most people's pedal stroke worse. Plus they make you look like a dickhead when you take forever to clip in at the light or do the inevitable "0 mph fall"
>>
>>933487

Have you ever ridden on clipless pedals before or are you just going full-retard here? Just curious because you sound like you have very little experience riding.
>>
>>933487
>Plus they make you look like a dickhead when you take forever to clip in at the light or do the inevitable "0 mph fall"
Holy shit, this kid confirmed giving up after falling like a bitch. This is pretty sad.
>>
>>921720
DH riders need more upper body strength. That leaves them more /fit/ looking than skelly roadies.
>>
>>933480
Upstroke is a myth, top riders don't pull up when pedaling.
>>
>>933173

You're a fucking idiot. A fucking idiot.
>>
>>933539
You're right. The power efficiency comes from the stiff sole on clipless shoes. Not sure how people can't tell the difference.
>>
>>933487
Cringed
>>933173
If you're not mechanically experienced, get your ots tuned up and a new cassette, chainring, and chain. It's like 1/1000th the cost of a high end bike but with all the crispness and new bike feel. The weight and handling aren't things you'll be worried about in average everyday riding. The "feel" of parts that work are.
>>
>>933556
The efficiency comes from your imagination or perhaps from post-purchase rationalization.
>>
>>933539
I can believe this. I am a sucky rider, and I think I pull up a bit on the upstroke while sprinting because my rear wheel lifts off the ground and moves around a little. Good sprinters don't do that.

I gotta work a lot on my form
>>
>>933617
That happened to me a lot, until I changed to an aggressive rear tyre and larger wheel size.
>>
>>933489

I'm sure I'm more experienced than you. You're probably only running clipless because your bike mechanic told you it would make you a faster rider.

>>933499

I can tracksit/stand for 15+ minutes. I do MTB and trials as well as road. Balance isn't an issue for me. Both types of pedals have their places.

>>933578

Not as cringey as you comparing old bikes to new ones, stay mad poorfag.
>>
>>933679
>>933598
Literally new to /n/ and i can see why this board is trash. Filled with poorfags who worship fashion hipster faggoty bikes and idiots who genuinely believe clipless pedals are terrible. The level of delusion on here is off the chart.

because the 'roadies' we're talking about are late teens to early thirties millennials who grew up backbiting peers on myspace and facebook instead of learning how to be decent human beings. i'd ride with the 'fred' any day of the week because odds are the 'fred' isn't a total dick.

What is it with dentists being plebs with expensive toys? I live a dual /o/ and /n/ life and I know dentists with nice cars always modified. Go to a track day and they can't drive for shit and they don't seem to care. They just want to have their race car on the race track.
>>
>>936473
They make good money and have a flexible schedule with lots of time off, so they tend to get into enthusiast hobbies, but the money comes before the enthusiasm.

Doctors and lawyers for example, have money, but work long and irregular hours.
