I'm sure if you threw a boatload of cash at a decent LBS they'd find a way to make it work.
Best thing about my ride today was that my phone rang in the middle of it - a friend of mine gave me a lead about what could be a ridiculously cool gig (bike-related AND it pays well?!?). Wish me luck /n/.
I've been getting in 30-40 miles in everyday this week including today, taking advantage of a mid-winter warm spell. None of my recent rides have been anything epic, just little jaunts with plenty of variety, the goal being to keep my fitness at least moderately intact over the winter months.
>>918176
Are you in California as well? The last week has been dream weather for commuting, mid 60s to 70 and almost no wind.
I've been taking detours just to stay on the bike for a bit longer.
>>918179
Nope, but Colorado has been nice too (40's-50's, wind and a few flakes every few days, but no real storms for over two weeks now) - just warm enough for riding to be comfortable without any serious winter gear.
>>918182
I bow to your cycling grit, 40-50f is where I consider just driving and you're calling it milk-run weather ahahaha
itsunnyspot.
Most of this week has been a bust for riding. A couple days of crazy winds, and two days screwing around redesigning a website. The one ride I did I cut short because my bars were off enough I'd just end up with a sore neck. I should be able to make up for it on the weekend with decent weather.
Tomorrow its getting up to 1 °C so my aim is 100 km on my touring bike to complete the January Strava GF. Probably 50 km out on asphalt, then the return leg on gravel which given the recent weather will be packed smooth clay, or unrideable washboard.
>>918108
It was a short one but thanks for ask!!
It nearly got up to 40f for my commute, had to unzip to stay cool. Took a different route home and listened to a new album.
>>918182
colorado bro here too, sadly I have been working way too many hours to even go riding, last saturday after a half day I got a 30 miler in, but it was getting cold at the end and my rear tire was going flat.
Glassy ice for half the ride, blissfully free of other cyclists.
The rest was just salt.
+0 celsius, a little rainy, watery ice and snow everywhere. Not a single cyclist in sight. Spent 90%+ in the lowest gear I have, even pedaling downhill through the snow.

Did 107 km in 5 hours today. Pretty good weather, ranging between -8 °C at the start and +2 by the end. The gravel roads were in very good shape for the most part.
Downside was my first case of during ride diarrhea of the year. Had to stop twice to take a dump, fortunately on the secluded gravel part of the ride. I think it might be from eating a big plate of scrambled eggs (made with 4 eggs) before heading out.

I climbed a nearby hill I climb all the time but with my parents this time. Needless to say we went at turtle place, somehow when you ride slow everyone else seems like a tryhard. Of course when you ride fast everyone else seems like a casual.
Ride was going well until I decided it was probably cold enough to go down a dirt road. It wasn't and my tires quickly picked up enough mud they would not move at all. So I carried the bike back to the intersection and spent the next 20 minutes scraping mud out of the fenders, and enough off my boots to let me clip into my pedals.
Instead of waiting until the end of the month like I did with the January Strava Grand Fondo, I got February's out of the way today. With the two of the traditionally shittiest months out of the way I should have little trouble doing the remaining 10 this year.
110 km in 5.5 hours, 60% unpaved roads with the temperature steady around -7 °C. I was dressed perfectly, which is to say I got cold quickly if I stopped for more than a few minutes. When I finished my base layer didn't even feel moist.

40 km fat bike creek ride today. Right at the start and finish there was a disconcerting sound of cracking ice. The warm weather had snow sticking to my cleats, so I had trouble clipping in throughout the ride. I was doing pretty good on the way out. On the way back my HR was about 20 bpm higher up into Z4 and my legs were stiff. I'm not sure if I got behind on fueling or if the 400 km of winter riding over the past week finally caught up with me.
never been to /n/ before, but feel like posting story
So about 3 weeks ago I had a brilliant idea of my girlfriend and I getting a couple cheap bicycles so we could ride together on the weekend. I had no idea what I was going to buy, did zero research and got a couple bikes used from a pawn shop.
>mfw come to /n/ and see denali in op
yeah so i got one of these meme bikes for $120. Unbeknownst to me, the wheels weren't the stock ones. At the local bike shop I got some new tubes and tires for the bike the and guy pointed it out.
>mfw mavic cxp-30s
i don't even know if they're very good, but the bike shop guy said cheap mavics usually run about $250. so i feel a little less shit for owning a cheapo bike.
so i start riding and am getting pretty into it. i get a high visibility wind breaker, some padded bike shorts, and a fanny pack to hold some tools and my phone. over the past 3 weeks I've done about 75 miles of riding. this feels bretty good because i've never exercised in my life.
most of my rides are fairly short rides on the streets down here in crazy socal. doing about 8-10 miles on average and keeping track of my rides with my smartwatch. feels pretty comfy.
i think the more this shit warms up to me, i might actually do some research and get a good bike in the future.

Silly me for thinking the wind would be better today.
That the worst ride I've ever done and wasn't enjoyable at all.
Strong crosswind on the way there wass really fucking strong, and the route was very hilly, like this cunt

Also had a rackbag with my U lock, and clothes since I was going to a pub so my bike (cheap hybrid commuter with mudguards) was fucking heavy.
On the way back it was constant headwind and was even hillier, it wasn't fun at all. Even the really steep bendy hill that should have been really fun was horrible.
Think I've also pulled a muscle in my ankle and I have a headache.
It's been so windy the past 6 months I can't even remember when it was below 15mph winds. Apparently the gusts atm are up to 56mph. Mental.
Not doing that again, should have stayed at home.

this and just coast over the ice, dont be trying to put any power into pedaling when you go over it, just a straight line no turning. Be ready to unclip quickly to plant a foot down and avoid a fall. Later on stay away from snow with much road grim in it from the plows, it is usually iced up blocks of snow that dont crush easily and are tough to ride through.
>>922005
Riding in the first undisturbed snow is fun as long as you can avoid obstacles. Tires slice through the snow and react fairly predictable. Once it gets churned up by cars or packed smooth and slippery it is much more difficult to ride.
When its slippery try cornering slow and don't lean. It feels weird but leaning will just let the bike slide out from under you. If you ride an MUP and it has a lot of slanted sections, you will be better off riding on the road. When slippery, a slanted section will pull you to the low side and you can't fight against it without risking having the front wheel slip out.
I hate when we get enough snow that you can't tell the path from the grass. You can run off the path at a shallow angle and your front wheel will catch the edge of the pavement.
>>919703
ive got the same exact rack as you
though i have been meaning to bend that back lip down and make it straight, makes it difficult at times to put anything on there thats longer then the flat part
>>922036
> If you ride an MUP and it has a lot of slanted sections, you will be better off riding on the road.
Ehh, the thing about roads is they have cages on them, usually operated by homicidal retards with little regard for human life. With slippery surfaces and chunks of ice that may or may not crush when your tire hits them, combined with "puddles" that may or may not be 10" deep potholes, I prefer to take my chances on the MUP when there's snow, slush, or ice out. The slightest dodge to avoid a pothole or to regain traction after hitting a frozen brick could result in a quick and ugly death.
Not cyclocross guy. I have a cyclocross bike but I have studded tires and I'm more or less prepared for most things short of another blizzard.

Rode just over 100 km both yesterday and today with the temperature getting all the way up to -2 °C. I should have stuck with the route I originally planned for today. This morning the forecast wind direction was opposite of what was forecast yesterday, but that forecast was wrong. My average heart rate was 20 bpm lower than a similar ride I did 10 days ago. It always takes me about a week and half to adjust when switching back to a bike that I haven't used in a while.
Also set a new February distance PR already. This one should stand for a decade until the next big el nino.
>fall
>chainring is sharp enough to be a ninja star, horribly worn
>chain keeps slipping
>winter
>dirt, grime and ice seemed to hardened on chainrings enough to stop slipping
>warm the past week
>chain keeps skipping
>riding in the bike lane
>can hear the cyclist behind me clicking his tongue because my chain slipped at every stoplight
He was behind me for 4 stoplights. I was getting annoyed myself because my legs slip off the pedals when it does
>>922930
So replace it, jeez.
>>922957
It's not an issue with the hub. The chainrings are way beyond sharktooth, having sharp edges now. It's only the middle ring.
I tried changing the crankset but the LBS near my area only had 28's which meant no clearance on my current 22. Can't find replacement chainrings either. Went through the parts bin at the co-op and can't find a fitting chainring.
Rode my road bike today. My first one so I'm still getting used to it.
I managed to swerve into the soil on the side of the track, my front wheel just sunk in and I fell I to the track. Ended up with grazed elbow, knee, ass and wrist.
The reason I swerved is the bottle rack is in an awkward position so it's hard to get my bottle out, guess I'll move it now. The handling is less forgiving than a mtb too.
Worst thing is my front wheel is now not true. It's not rubbing the brakes but when I do brake I can feel it. I've only trued a mtb wheel and I feel that a road bike wheel would be more difficult due to far fewer spokes and narrower wheel which I think demands a higher level of perfection especially as it used rim brakes and not disc like my mtb.
Also there's some sort of creaking around the seat or seat post I hope nothing is cracked desu. Aluminium bike btw.
But it was a good ride, feel fast
>>921272
Is that Norton Summit Road?
>>923010
Make sure your saddle and seatpost are properly tightened
I got some new tires that are a little fatter than my old ones (700x28 before, 700x30 now)
The fender clearance was adequate when I got them, and I've put about 200 miles on them so far.
Yesterday it was pretty cold, and I noticed a weird sound about halfway into my ride, it got more and more worrisome so I stopped and found it was from the tire rubbing the rear fender. I thought maybe I had overinflated the tires so I unscrewed the valve slightly to let some air out, but the second I started untwisting it the valve exploded with a bang. I assume the air had heated up from the rubbing (at this point I had been hearing rubbing noises for about 3 miles averaging about 20mph)
It was too cold to change the tube properly so I took the train home and changed it last night. There was no rubbing at proper pressure. This morning about 5 miles into my ride, I heard the rubbing again. Since it's even colder today (25 F) I turned around and headed home slowly after letting out a little bit of air (didn't make much difference).
There's no rubbing when I spin the wheel inside.
All I can think of is the fender is changing shape in the cold. Anyone ever had this problem? This time the rubbing is above the valve stem, last time it was opposite the valve stem. I assume the tire is a little bit bunched up in those spots since I always mount from the valve stem out, but I figure it should even out after some riding. They're schwalbes, they look a little more wobbly when I spin the wheel compared to my contis, but it's the tire, not the wheel.
>>923037
I have pretty tight clearances on my fenders too, with 700x32 tires that actually measure just under 30.
For me, the fender mounting hardware just moves around a mm or two and it rubs sometimes, just pulling the fender away from the tire solves it.
>>923039
In my case the spot where it rubs is between the chainstay bridge and the seatstay bridge, there's no way to pull since it's firmly held by the bolts.
They're plastic (planetbike), I wonder if I got metal fenders whether the shape would be less susceptible to temperature changes.
>>923034
No, it's Mount Lofty Summit road going from greenhill to the summit.
Norton is mostly a lot more open than that.
So far have been managing to fend off the winter riding funk. Warm temperatures and little snow helps, but I miss riding my road bike outside.
>>923042
Yeah mine are plastic too and mostly rub at the extreme ends, either at the back or at the chainstays. I don't think the plastic changes shape with temperature, but who knows.
Maybe loosen the bolt and adjust it a little if it's rubbing only on one side?
Did 61km today, 3 hours 21 minutes or something. Got lost etcetc I won't bore you with the details but I had to get a friend to give me a lift home because I ran out of energy 6km from home.
Shamefur dispray desu but I really had completely run out. Also I nearly bonked earlier but luckily a fish and chip van appeared on the road in front of me lel so I got some chips.
Felt really awful though, both the near bonk and running out of energy.
>>922930

Why replace an entire drivetrain or bike when your only problems are a worn out chainring (and probably chain and cassette too)? Those are wear items, they have to be periodically replaced now matter what kind of bike you ride.
>>923116
Can't find a chainring that fits. Ordering the specific chainring means $30 just for the middle ring whereas a new crankset runs for $50.
>>923106
oh wow rekt
you most likely need the chainrings/cranks, chain and cassette if that middle chainring says anything about the rest
>>923106
It looks like your chainrings are bolted on and not riveted, so you should be able to get a replacement. Model number for your cranks should be on the inside of the crank arms, which will help you find the correct replacement.
>>923129
It only says sugino and has a circle that says 170 in it which I'm guessing is the crank length

Yeah, I returned to my bike with a clear head this evening and it turns out the mounting holes are slots rather than perfect holes. I was able to get about 5mm of travel from the chainstay bridge bolt and that dramatically improved the clearance.
I feel pretty stupid now but also relieved that I can keep riding this winter. I had thought I was fucked and I'd have to get rid of these studded tires.
>>923132
http://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/pages/how-to-measure-bolt-circle-diameter-bcd
Measure your BCD and determine what kind of rings do you need. Also - since all the wear is on the middle, you might want to rethink the configuration of your crankset. You might benefit from a single ring drivetrain if you concentrate your riding on just one front ring.
You'll also need to replace the chain and cassette. Low end shimano cassettes are heavy, but very durable. Chains - HG5x or above are fine.
If you have other questions - just ask.
>>923168
At what point do you decide that replacing parts is worth it? I bought the bike for $200 used. Rims are pretty worn when it was purchased...it has a L shape lip on the rims, even more so right now. It definitely needs a new rear wheel because the freehub is toast and I a new one runs for $80 at the LBS. I feel the need to upgrade the brakes too, about $40 each.
It's a MTB but I use it exclusively for commuting year round, so one chainring is totally fine for me. I do have remorse buying a used bike, I've spent quite a lot of cash to bring it back to life, totals to about $300 so far.
>>923184
$500 CAN is not bad for that bike in my opinion. I would say that the frame is going to last basically forever. You could spend extra and get a set of hand built wheels and they will last longer than the cheaper ones. I say if you ride that bike almost every day putting in a few hundred bucks a year in parts and maintenance is worth it.
Went for an easy ride along the edge of the inner city to help rehab a knee injury, saw this outside a bike shop. Camera didn't get it properly but the number was 3235.
>>923189
I'll look into parts. My commute/errands works out to be around 2000km each year
>>923184
You might be able to find a used crank on the cheap for even less than a chainring. Sometimes I see people in a local facebook parts group practically giving away old 7/8 speed stuff they had collecting dust.
Got in a nice 40 miles today, lovely weather and the first time this year I'd seen more than a handful of other people out riding (55 degrees, sunny, snow pretty much gone, roads nearly dry), more than I expected to see on a Thursday afternoon. Easily cruising up climbs past struggling fair-weather folk made me feel really good about having preserved my fitness over the past few months.
Up in the NW, rained for the whole 3 hours. Cashed in on that free Chipotle deal so I'm pretty sure I broke even calorie wise
>>923194
I ride around 20km a day every weekday to work and do some weekend rides as well and find I go through at least one casette, maybe two chains, at least one pair of disc brake rotors and pads, and often a chain ring and cables and housing. Add lube and stuff like lights or fenders or gloves that wear out, I easily put a few hundred into my bike in a year. I still think it is cheaper than taking the subway and it is faster and more fun
>>923184
If I got a bike dialed to my needs - pretty much anything goes. Getting shit like seat angle, bar position and whatnot tends to get expensive.
Anyhow - the deal with used bikes is that you are trading in some labor and cost which they incur due to their used state. If you can't put in the labor, you have to pay for it. For that exchange you get a lower price.
A new bike from a reputable LBS will put you back $1000+ but usually does not need any attention for an extended time. From months, for a modern, multispeed MTB, to years in the case of internal gearbox city bikes.
If you don't get a killer deal on some other used bike ( which you are going to need to adjust to your needs anyway ) then I'd invest in the one you already have.
The only showstopper I see is the fact, that your bike is quite old ( 20+ years ) so getting it to modern standards might prove difficult.
Besides - spending $500 on a bike, that will last you 2-3 years, is peanuts in comparison to how much you need to spend on a car. And you get long term health benefits from this as well.
Of course, I don't speak about investing into high end butique stuff :)
went for my 1st ride of February, maybe my 3rd or so of the year. This winter so far has not been kind to me, mostly been working too much. I was about 2mph off my normal 20 mile ride. I felt tired few miles from finishing too.
Rode my electrified recumbent. Full throttle through some thick powder snow like 3cm, wanted to get home real quick. Fish tailing all the time. 30km/h on the clear stretches. Wind was a total bitch when outside temperature is -20C. Crashed like 3 times, ripped the wire to my tail light.

Rode some offroad but tire pressure was sorta high, really harsh ride. I thought Ti was supposed to be forgiving?
>>923791
Tyres are still the biggest source of suspension on a rigid bike.
>>923791
Really don't like the looks of straight carbon fork on Ti. Can't they make a Ti bike with a classic curved Ti fork?
>>923807
Not with disks, no. The point of those elegant curved forks is to flex under impact, but if you put a caliper on one side only bad things would happen.

Sorry, /r9k/ here and unaware of /tr/ board culture. Is this where I post asking for mechanical advice?
I have a terrible problem! Today riding to the shops I noticed my rear tire began to rub agains the mudguard. I stopped and gave the mud guard a shake and it sorta fixed it but being anxious, 200m down the road I stopped again and flip day bike upside down to make sure the wheel was straight.
It wasn't.
Worse it wasn't just misaligned, but rather had a warp in it, when I located where the warped bit was sure enough there was a loose, slightly bent spoke.
Now it's a fancy internal hub and I really don't want to get the whole wheel replaced. If I get this spoke repaired, will the wheel just bend back into shape?
>>923820
>/tr/
>>923822
fuck I dunno! I'm sorry chad.
>>923820
>If I get this spoke repaired, will the wheel just bend back into shape?
I won't just bend back into shape, but part of the process of fixing a spoke is re-trueing the wheel, not including the cost of a spoke (if it needs replacing not fixing) should be somewhere around $20 or maybe a bit more.
>>923824
Ok, I can afford that. That sounds ok. I'll fix that on Wednesday.
Is it worth learning how to build/repair wheels myself? I just opened up Sheldon Brown's (blessings be upon him) webpage on it and it looks really hard.

your an fucking fag. there's no way to 'ride' away with the bike if it was ulocked on the fork. the ulock will be locking to at least a couple spokes with that kind of spoke count. your a fag
>>923928
I'm assuming the ulock was around 1 fork arm only, not passing through the wheel or any spokes. Remove wheel, slide fork out, replace wheel. I saw that once on a bike with bolt on wheels, it sat in the same spot for months without getting stolen.
Earlier in the week I noticed the smooth packed mud top layer of the unpaved roads started flaking away. Today it was just about completely gone in many spots. Roads still aren't bad, but that change eats a few km/h off my top speed.
I had to take several days off riding after putting in a few long rides earlier in the week. I felt like crap. Not like a cold / flu, just weak with no energy. Noticed some black gunk in my water bottle, so maybe it was a reaction to mold.
>>918108
>warm weather

You'd hope everything would be right out of the that, but...
I mean, chain drops can happen on properly set-up bikes, can't they? I wasn't shifting under any particular load though.
Joined in a group gravel ride, got crushed. But most of them race road, mtb and cross, so I didn't feel too bad. To keep up my HR was over 170. Which didn't leave much left for when encountering a hill. Plus I ended up drenched in sweat.
I really need to start doing more intense ride or I'll never get faster. There are only two types of group rides around here, hardcore and geriatric.
What's the trick to get the PSI gauge to work on this? Worried I may have got a busted one.
>>921011
People born during the 70s and occasionally late 60s all type like that. So yes it means the millenials typing retard now will keep doing it way into their middle ages.
>>924127
I'm in a similar position but I bike all year around. I think I have narrowed it down to wearing warmer clothes and not having enough cooling and mobility during the winter. Last year when a heat wave hit (from winter to summer outfit in one day basically) I went from 22km/h average to 30 km/h average in just one day.
I noticed a broken wire near my bar end shifter. On both my road and touring bikes the rear derailleur cable starts going right around 6,000 km.
>>924375
That's one of the disadvantages of barcons. The cam is small and the radius is tight because they have to make it sweep through all the gears in one lever throw, and the cable is exposed. It's made worse by the fact that the cable is also forced through cable housing instead of out in the open like on the downtube.
I did my good deed for the week and rode with a friend who's not in shape but appreciates the extra motivation to push himself on rides. He insisted on riding off pavement in spite of the fact that our trails are currently half-covered in slush, so three hours were spent riding/walking through 12 miles of swampy muck, with patient waiting at the top of every climb - fuck that shit. On the bright side the post-ride beer was really good and the weather forecast the rest of the week is fabulous, so I'll be able to take full advantage of having a rest day today.

>ride shimano for 4 years on 5 different bikes

>"why isn't it shift- oh..."
Now I know why they call it shitmano. Sram shifts so well I can't even tell that it shifted. My shimanos will usually grind a little before shifting, sram shifts instantly. Not having the audio cue tricks me. The only shitty part about sram is that I can't downshift as quickly as shimano for the rear.
Fucked my wrist today in a wet turn, I wasn't even turning that fast or tight. Fuck gatorskins, this never happened with my GP 4000S II.

Hello, I'm the sort of guy that can't keep up.
I have a hybrid stacked with a pannier with my work cloths.
I don't have enough ambition or time to get a trainer or do intervals, but whenever someone passes me I try to keep up with them as long as I can. Its a test against myself using you as a baseline.
That said, fuck anyone who half wheels or actually tries to pass you.

I mainly do bicycle touring and I love passing people. Especially the spandex wearing road bikers. If I ever see one, I make it my mission to keep up with them or pass them. The people on mountain bikes can't keep up, but sometimes the road bikes do speed up and pass me back. Keeps me fit.
I've even had a guy on a mtb ride next to me and start yelling some shit because I passed him like 5 times (he would always catch up with me at lights and could accelerate faster). Can't be that good for the ego when a guy with fully loaded touring bike makes you his bitch.
