All you guys that use just water are obviously never riding more than an hour and a half, or you're not ever riding faster than 10 to 12 miles per hour, I'd say. You guys really need to step up your game if you want to be considered 'cyclists'. What do you guys ride? Fixies?

>>
What about all the pro riders who have carbs and electrolytes in their bottles? Are they just dumb?

What about really hot summer days when you're sweating bullets and can't even get enough water into you to start with and you know you're losing electrolytes through your sweat? Are heat exhaustion/heat stroke and hyponatremia just memes?

What about the fact that, at any given level of exertion, you're using *both* bodyfat *and* carbohydrates to fuel with, and running out of carbohydrates will cause you to bonk? Is that just a meme too?

You guys aren't making any sense.
>>
>>914767
Well, what speeds are you guys averaging on the flat, for, say 3 hours, then? That will give me an idea of you level of intensity.
>>
>>914744

I fill them with air. Before my rides I displace the air with water.
>>
>>914768
>>914769

You're in the wrong place if you want advice from tryhard wannabe pros like yourselves. Go to some douchebag forum or go for a sunday morning ride from your LBS with some freds if you want to talk to other idiots and circlejerk about psuedoscience bullshit and bad nutrition science.

The human body knows what it's doing. Keep hydrated (water) and keep your energy stores up (carbs) and some caffeine, if you like, to keep your head in the game.

Eating a good and nutritious diet OFF the bike will make a hundred times more difference than doing anything other than what I said above ever would or could.

also "muh electrolytes sports drink" HINT: its just salty water with carbs (aka sugar) in it.
>>
>>914767
I tried doing one of my 2-hour Tempo rides with just plain water and about halfway through it was like someone forgot to charge my batteries and they were going dead on me, I had to drop out of Tempo pace and just plug along until I got home, then I felt really really drained for hours even after I ate and drank again. I don't think just water is always appropriate, guys.

Wow.

Some of what you're saying is true (good off-bike nutrition, including staying hydrated all the time, well in advance of riding) but the rest of it just stinks to high heaven of massive bitterness and disappointment. Did you try racing and failed at it or something? Come on, man, there's no shame in admitting that, at least you tried, right?

>>914775
Sodium and chloride (together: table salt) are two of them and the most prevalent, but calcium, potassium, and magnesium are also essential electrolytes and you lose those through sweat, too. It's just playing it safe to be replenishing them at the same time you're replacing lost fluid.

Taking it relatively easy, I can average 18 to 20mph (29 to 32kph) over that distance, on the flat, faster if I want to work at it.
>>
>>914764
>>914754

lmao my 40km TT time was 56:55 on a drop bar bike and the fastest 100mi ride was like 26mph during a race. if you get cramps from going fast/long its because your body isnt fit enough for it yet. 99% of the time ur body has reserves for at least 2 weeks of living without any nutrients other than water. just think about that.

in a race or really long ride u might want to eat a few gels or a proton bar or whatever but you really dont need much.
>>
>>914785
For a short event like a crit or a TT you don't even need a bottle on the bike at all (unless your mouth being dry distracts you), if you weren't completely loaded hours before your start time then you really screwed up, and in a 100-mile RR you're drafing in the pack, and if you're part of a team you've got teammates to draft off of, especially if you're the designated sprinter. Nice, but not all that impressive, really. Keep working at getting that 40k time down under 56:00 though.

Who said anything about 'sports drinks'? I buy maltodextrin in bulk and bulk electrolytes and mix my own for pennies a bottle, it ends up cheaper than even using table sugar. I haven't bought any 'sports drinks' in years.

You have to order it online and to get the best price you have to buy 50 pounds of it at a time. Just mix 25 to 50 grams in a bottle with water, add electrolytes, and some stevia or xylitol to taste, or whatever else you want to put in it.

No shit, that's why you should eat some greens once in a while.

I can imagine most cyclists eat clean, unlike the /fit/ idiots who eat raw eggs and powders or whatever.

I grab a banana with me on long rides to prevent cramping up on hot days.>>914788

You say "just" like that's some big secret.

You know at triathlons they give out salt tablets? TABLETS.

People buy sports drinks because making them out of generic bulk powders is a pain in the ass and most of us aren't as poor as you.
>>
>>914870
I looked at things like that. You end up paying for water, whatever artificial flavor is in it, you have no say over the ratio of carbs to water, and it doesn't have the whole spectrum of essential electrolytes in it. Also, I prefer maltodextrin as the carb souce, Gatorade and Powerade use a sugar, which will rot your teeth, while maltodextrin won't. Use whatever works for you though, I'm not judging.

>>914873
The thing is though, you sweat out the electrolytes and water pretty fast, and at least in my case, from experience, I know that hurts my performance later in the ride, and if it's hot out I really end up feeling like shit then. Oh, and no way I'm taking bananas with me, I don't need to start farting uncontrollably in the middle of a long ride, which is what they'll do to me between the fructose and the fiber. I eat bananas when I'm not riding.

>>914877
>when training on a fast
I don't actually do that. A couple years ago I tried cutting the carbs in my bottles down by half (from 50g to 25g maltodextrin) to see if I could get even better control over my weight (which worked fantastically, by the way), and these days for shorter rides (2 hours or less) I'll skip putting any carbs in my bottles (unless I'm going to ride at Tempo or above, that is), but I'm not so sure I'd go out for a long ride starting out hungry. I've heard arguments on both sides of that.

>>914880
>>914882
Yeah, the thing I suspect with that guy, is that if he experimented with some changes in his on-bike hydration/nutrition during training, he might find he performs even better. Hard to say because we know nothing about the guy. That being said I've noticed that it seems like cutting carbs in my bottles (see above) has in some instances actually made me perform better. Not sure how that would work though, I haven't seen any reliable science to back the idea up, just anecdotal data.

You commonly go on 14+ hour rides? Or does fructose and fiber have a laxative type of effect on you?
>>
>>914911
I've noted what bananas do to me normally. I'm not going to go on a long or hard ride and be chowing down on bananas. Honestly it never made any sense to me anyway, I'll need water anyway so why bother having to take twice as much shit with me, some of which can get messy? Not like I'm going to stop to eat in most cases anyway, and what would I do with the peel? Stuff it back in my jersey pocket? Thanks but no thanks, I'll stick to what I'm used to.

I used to work in forestry and spent 6+ hours going up and down hills/ravines/mountains with 15-40lbs of gear. Add chaps and a chainsaw under low level canopy, making the 80-100°F feel more like 90-110°F. Yet I could go +3 hours on just water alone.

>>
>>921469
Tablets are for electrolytes. They help with cramping and fatigue. They don't give you a magic jet fuel boost. Sugar is always going to be the main component that affects energy, because calories are literally a measure of energy. Maltodextrin is digested slightly better plain sugar, but it's not a big difference.

It's the best water bottle for cycling I've ever had, but then again I've only had the shitty kind that existed in the 1990s, followed by several decades of various non-cycling-specific bottles that I used before I assumed my final form as a middle aged fred.

Also what do you mean "worth the price" lol, they're cheaper than a mediocre bottle of wine.
>>
>>921569
It's £6 or we for a water bottle m8 is what I meant.

Do they do a bottle with a cover on it? Don't really like having the exposed mouthpiece, gets muddy easily.
>>
>>921570
Polars have one with a normal nozzle that's rubbery so it doesn't get chewed up when you open them with your teeth, creates a better seal, and are removable for cleaning.

Elite makes some with a cover on top of the nozzle, but obviously that required flipping the cover every time.
>>
>>921572
Yeah the podium one is the same with the rubbery nozzle
>Elite makes some with a cover on top of the nozzle, but obviously that required flipping the cover every time.
Nice might get one then, flipping the cover isn't a problem as long as it's easily done.
>>
>>921568
Best I've tried. The nozzles work pretty well and are removable for cleaning and you can also buy replacement lids. Usually the bottle outlives the lid
