The Pacific Extension was cool, and I can understand your enthusiasm, but it's always been a footnote (albeit an interesting one) from my perspective.
I associate the railroad with signs instructing engineers to "Reduce Speed to 90mph"
I kind of like the squared-off cowl style.

Fair enough, the Milwaukee had some pretty neat passenger trains operating on the eastern portion of their line (I assume that is what you are most interested in).
The Olympian Hiawatha was one of the best name trains to ever operate on American rails.

FP45s were awesome, I agree. Although they only lasted about 1 year in passenger service before they were repainted transferred to freight service (to prevent Amtrak from taking the locomotives)

I grew up near the C&M Sub and used to watch Soo/CP freights there. As I got older, I became more interested in the history of the line (some of my older relatives had actually been regular riders in the Milwaukee era)

It is to my understanding that the FP45 was designed specifically (at the request of the Santa Fe) for easy transition into freight service, as although the passenger industry was collapsing in 1967-1968, they still wanted a cowl locomotive to haul the final trains.

Yes, Santa Fe requested a cowl-body locomotive for their passengers trains since they felt that the SDP45 looked too much like a typical freight locomotive. Santa Fe was a class act to the end, but they also quickly moved their FP45s into the freight pool once Amtrak took over. Milwaukee Road with its five locomotives was the only other railroad to order FP45s. Santa Fe's 9 units remained in operation into the 1990s, while MILW's 5 units were all out of service and scrapped by the early 1980s. The lack of dynamic brakes on the MILW units meant that crews hated them and contributed to their early retirement.

In 1974, several Chicago suburbs funded the purchase of 15 new locomotives for their local Milwaukee Road commuter service.
The EMD F40C was essentially a passenger version of the SD40, and these 15 were the only examples built.
They eventually came under ownership of Metra, and were retired in 2003-2004 with the arrival of new MP36PH locomotives.
All but 2 are believed to have been scrapped. The two survivors are currently used for parts on Metra's F40PH fleet, and are planned to be rebuilt (internally) to F59 specifications.

I believe most of the catenary and wiring was left up all the way until the entire Pacific coast extension was abandoned and scrapped in 1980, six years after the end of electric operations. So they didn't actually make much money on scrapping the copper since prices had plummeted by the time they got around to it.

So anyone mind explaining to me why there are trainsim routes made of everything except my area? I realize that Train Sim a shit (I mean the one with the overpriced DLC on Steam, not MS TrainSim) but I enjoy running in it. Even Trainz just stops at Avery and then just runs into Montana. In Train Simulator they've got Stevens Pass with Great Northern right of way to the west that runs clear to Everett, Washington, to the south some dingus just made UP right of way in Southern Idaho, and to the east is the fucking Marias Pass. I would make my own route, but getting the SRTM data is a pain in the balls as is keeping it organized. I want a route that runs through Spokane, Washington, one that covers Tekoa and Plummer, and pretends that the Milwaukee Road still runs over the trestle in Tekoa while the Yellow Borg still runs through the town on the old Oregon Washington Railroad and Navigation Company right of way. When I had the original Microsoft Train Simulator, I remember getting ahold of a mammoth fucking route that ran from Montana clear up through Sandpoint... I never did explore the damn thing all the way, but I can guess it never went south either.
Apart from my noisy bullshit, I also am seeking some advice. Can anyone think of a way I could get a cab ride on one of the STMA locomotives? I live within easy driving distance of the old Milwaukee mainline, and after the 80s a little company called the St. Maries River Railroad took over the Milwaukee's operations in the area. They have 3 ex-MILW Geeps, all GP9s, and one SW1200 switcher that I assume is ex-MILW. Up until 2003 they pulled logging trains off the line out of Bovill and Clarkia, but now they're just using the line to serve the UP spur at the Plummer mill and to store cars for other roads. We now have pretty advanced mapping technology with Google maps and other GIS software. I'm surprised the entire US hasn't been mapped by now. I'd love to see a map of the PNW lines circa 1970 covering BN, Milwaukee, UP, etc.

I live in the St Louis area, and in the flood of 1993 a old military ship and a couple empty barges broke loose, hit one of the major St Louyis city bridges, and sank. And all three of them are still sitting where they went down.

IIRC, one barge broke loose and struck the other two ships, knocking them loose. Im too lazy to find the newspaper articles.
the barges sank right after hitting a bridge abutment. I dunno where on a map they are now, but they were tethered right at the stairs in front of the gateway arch. One of the barges had a flat top surface and was used as a landing area for helipcopter rides; you could buy fly-around trips in a helicopter back then.
The barges were full-size ones too--like, 120 by 30 yards. They were not small.
The reason they all got left was that the army corp of engineers said they were not in the way of the shipping channel, and the costs to recover them were too prohibitive for the owners to pay (with respect to what the ships were worth).

I rode METX 611 back in 2009 with my father and grandpa. Grandpa took a pic, I've got it in an album somewhere. IIRC they aren't in service anymore.
