When You look on this map (I know, poor quality) You'll still see borders of Polish XIX partitions in 1989; Russian and partially Austrian part was severely underdeveloped. Between the wars there was some development, but after WWII Polish railroad network had to be virtually built from scratch. Polish commies do it so well so Polish rails in 1989 were probably the worst of all European communist states; declining traffic and underinvestment of 90's didn't help. After 2000, there were a little better times for rail transport in Poland, but it network density lowered significally since 1989.
Czechoslovakia and Hungary have better and denser network in 1918, it suffered less in WWII i think, maybe even run better in the communist era, so have higher starting level in 1989 - and AFAIK, they started modern management reforms in early 90's (Communism on Polish State Rails lasts until 2000 :-)

I'm presently on Caltrain. They are just resuming service after 2 cars were hit in Burlingame 2 hours ago. This is the third incident this week.
Tuesday evening a car was hit in San Mateo. And Wednesday morning some dumbass was standing too close to the tracks on the platform and got clipped by a passing train.

It's about a 5 day transit by ship to Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. Alternatively, you can send from Mobile to Laredo or Brownsville, TX which is probably about 3-4 days transit by rail then interchange to a Mexican railway and they will bring it the 800 or so miles down to Veracruz. Total transit is probably 6-8 days, and you have to have your railcars transiting in Mexico longer exposing them to vandalism (big problem in Mexico).

The boiler on that is way up out of the way. I'd say much deeper than that and you will put the fire out. Which isn't as disastrous as you think, the engine still has steam so it can get itself out of the flood if it can., and that's an oil burner. So the fire can be relit almost any time.
The big thing to worry about would be metal stress on the firebox.

Took this pic at our overhaul shop last week. I work for BNSF, but this UP locomotive was on our tracks and was crashed into by one of our locomotives, so now we have to fix it for them. It was about 2 a.m. when I took this. A heavy fog was rolling off of the river nearby and the fuel tanks were being steamed out on the unit. Looked pretty spooky to me.

Don't quote me on it, but they leave steam hoses in the tank for at least 24 hours before doing any work on it. I believe it breaks down all of the fuel residue and helps reduce the risk of a fire or explosion when they start cutting and welding on the tank.

How does everyone feel about PTC? It seems that BNSF are currently the only ones who give a shit about it. As of last month, they had controllers installed on over 3,800 locomotives. The next runner up, UP, had a grand total of 68 locomotives modded with PTC. The extension of the deadline even included a special clause for BNSF to protect them in the event that their technology is outdated and must be upgraded by the time everyone else get's their shit together.

Where I work we're the guinea pigs for the whole system. Shit is going to be retarded and slow everything down. It's going to force engineers to run the truns in a very conservative manner, it's going to make it much more difficult to operate in non-CTC territory where you are joint with trains.

Round 2. We are always fucking these things up! This time we have the UPY 598 involved in the same type of sideswiping accident on a switch. A little note on the UP 9746, the accident occurred back in January and the unit sat on a siding until coming to us for repairs. We just released it yesterday with a fresh coat of paint. My supervisor told is that BNSF had to pay $1,000 per day since the wreck plus the cost of repairs. I'd guess around half a million just for that part of it.

I don't see the big deal, all railroads have certain number of extra carriages for various reasons. Ssay, one fleet of carriages would be suspended for unuxpected repairs or other special trains and perioidic variation in demand. It's simple, basically when they retire a fleet, the pecimens in best condition are spared and mothballed in case of future need.
What surprises me more is that superbowl would be the roll with all we got situation instead of say, christmas.

Actually you can. Throwing a private car onto the end of Amtrak isn't that expensive. (https://m.amtrak.com/mt/www.amtrak.com/privately-owned-rail-cars) It's the storage fees and insurance you're required to have that makes it cost so much. Luckily there are companies that lease out nice private cars that are tacked onto Amtrak. I've seen a lot by some company that uses the Pullman name.

It's probably because these are private companies that still have a need to wine and dine customers and such. Then there's also the fact that the passenger service of the major railroads always had a bit of class to it like the old airlines. The companies just held onto a small, and I do stress it's a very small fleet, of their best passenger cars and kept them in great shape.
It's not that crazy to think they'd have them, it's just that you won't see them all that often.

It's a bit early to replace the EMUs though, considering QR still has a shortage of trains for peak hour. That and the newer the train, the shitter the aircon. Newer ones are more humid inside and don't cool directly. That or they're completely impotent as is the case of the SMU 220's aircon (it's meant to be a 60kW unit but it functions like piss). That and the SMU 200s and EMUs have carpet and softer seats

Railcars have all but died out. There's only some nostalgia lines left, such as the local one in pic related. And of course there are some train lines that aren't electrified and only have one or two sets of rails, but even those usually run actual trains.

I honestly don't know what to think
Just hit a major milestone on my Japanese to English patch for the Japanese release of A-Train v4.0 Master Edition. Unlike the Steam release which features around 50ish trains, this has 150+ as well as extra missions and what not.

Currently all menus and objects are in full English with Trains and mission descriptions currently being worked on. I'm done with about 10% of the trains, with machine translations currently filling in the description. That'll be cleaned up with the missions towards the end.

The correct field is 2 - as I initially assumed. It works with this image from Wikipedia, but when I tried to use an image from imgur, it asked me for sign-in credentials. Really weird.
