You can straight up tell that's JR Aizu

In another part of the middle of nowhere. The Limited Express is dying for it has now been obsoleted by the Shinkansen

Nice sights it had though once it gets to the farm bit

I know shit about trains, but this one looks pretty cool. How is this type/brand called?
>>
>>821705

There's no way San'in and the other more ... "remote" regions are ever going to be feasible enough for Shinkansen to set foot

>>821936

It is the JR Hokkaido 789 EMU, that livery specificly is for the Super Hakucho LImited Express service that runs between Shin-Aomori and Hakodate through the Seikan Tunnel ... which will probably be replaced by the Hokkaido Shinkansen when it opens next year
>>
>>821986
I saw the Twilight Express on a video. It goes along the west coast of Japan bypassing the big cities and it's a sleeper.
>>
>>822002

Well, technically the north coast of the mainland towards Hokkaido. And the original service stopped in March 13th this year and now is a special cruise train for the Sanyo area from Osaka to Shimonoseki, which somehow takes a whole day plus a few hours

Video of the last run and yes, it is an occasion

The fuck, I don't remember seeing that type on the right when I lived in aizu. Guess they started getting newer hand-me-downs from the JR mainlines? Must be using it for the Banetsu express, but it isn't dressed up in that black and red livery...

That particular 485 Series EMU set in the pictured was used for the Nikko / Kinugawa Ltd. Express service from 2006 to 2001 before moved to the Sendai Depot and used for the Aizu Liner. I believe the 485 set you mentioned with the black and red livery was reverted back to the old JNR livery in 2011

Speaking of the 485 series, since they are gradually being phased out by JR East I have to wonder when will it finally stop being used for regular services
>>
>>
>>823713

I have to wonder if they are actually going to scrap the Yamanote E231s after all of them are replaced by E235s in the future
>>
>>823724
The process is already happening. Although each E235 apparently has one car taken from an E231 and redecorated to look like an E235 as a "demo car". The E231 hallmark is the flooring which wasn't changed
The E231 would be past its useby date in 2020 anyway since it was designed for 15 years of service
>>
>>823955
>since it was designed for 15 years of service
What the fuck? Most buses can run past 15 years of service.
>>
>>824020
Japs upgrade really fast, dude.

They like 'em young and fresh. By the time they're able to consent they're considered too old.
>>
>>823955

There's is only one set of E235 so far and it is still under testing (I spotted it sitting in the Tamachi Stock Yard while I was heading towards Yokohama last month), the replacement process will probably begin when the production cars are delivered

>>824031

>>
>>824020

Since the 1990s, JR East begin to design trains with the goals of reducing weight, building cost, and service life of their new vehicles (any scrapped vehicles have their materials recycled into new trains). That became important due to several reasons:

- After the privatizion of the JNR and the economic climate became worse after the 80s cost reduction is necessary
- By keeping older trainsets running it would increase maintenance cost and impede technological progress
- Reducing weight would reduce energy waste and cost of electricity

The JR East 209 Series became the first product built with those principles in mind and despite the above a good number of them got rebuilt anyway to replace even older stocks

What's the ratio of DMUs to EMUs in Japan? It seems like they have quite a bit of diesel-powered rolling stock. Does anyone have a map showing which rail lines in Japan are electrified?
>>
>>827208
wikipedia has some good figures:

JR East
System length
Total 7,526.8 km (4,676.9 mi)
Double track 3,668 km (2,279 mi) (49%)
Electrified 5,512.7 km (3,425.4 mi) (73.2%)
High-speed 1,052.9 km (654.2 mi) (14.0%)

JR West
System length
Total 5,012.7 km (3,114.7 mi)
Double track 2,253.2 km (1,400.1 mi) (44.9%)
Electrified 3,385.7 km (2,103.8 mi) (67.5%)
High-speed 644.0 km (400.2 mi) (12.8%)
>>
>>827208

Page 3 has a map as of 1998

http://www.jrtr.net/jrtr16/pdf/f48_technology.pdf

As far as the ratio of DMU to EMU as concerned, Shikoku and Hokkaido has more DMUs due to their electrified lines are much shorter

The E5 in Green Car is nice and I could enjoy being there for a while, but if I were to ride again, I'd be paying up for Gran Class just for shits and giggles. >Begin long winded justification
It depends on how much you value your money. I flew jetstar (actually bretty good once you leave Australia because all the bogans being dropped off at the Coolangatta are replaced by returning japanese tourists who keep their mouthes shut) and stayed in cheap 6000-10000 yen/night business hotels which I found offered what I needed and wanted because I wasn't going to spend much time there except sleep. So the $70 or so extra seemed worth it especially as I was going to be milking it. The only other thing is that you have to do the extra work of reserving a seat before riding. And in peak hour, reserving 5 minutes before the train departs may mean that a duo can't sit together (although often adjacent the aisle) due to all the window seats being taken by businessmen
It's like flying domestic business class minus the perks. You get the seat, blankets, a wet towel and on Hayabusa or Hayate, a drink. Whereas Gran Class is supposedly more like the experience as there's more premium complimentary alcohol selections, shoehorns, snacks, bento and all that. The seat is also arguably better just on appearance than the domestic business class offerings on some airlines here too
>>
>>830194
I think I'll do Green next time, but how much extra is Gran class?
>>
>>830393

You basically have to pay for the Limited Express + Gran Class suppliment fares (even if you have the Green Pass) since the it only covers the basic fare if you go Gran Class. As far as cost is concerned that depends on the distance
>>
>>830431
Pretty much this. The JR Pass (doesn't matter which one) is meant to give you a "discount" on Gran Class as it covers the basic fare (so knock about $100 off the Tokyo-Aomori run). No clue on whether the staff would even be aware of that's how it's apparently meant to work. Then again, the guy at Yoshiwara station didn't look like he ever saw tourists but knew what a JR Pass was. Obviously if you have the JR Pass, and the Green one at that it isn't worth it. But it's a shits and giggles thing, and still far cheaper than flying business class

Well, the "good news" is that JR Hokkaido already built their own depot next to the station with the long-ass name in Hakodate (seen on the right next to the end of the curve. They say it houses 4 sets and will eventually expand to house 13 sets when the Sapporo extension is completed. [lolnospoiler] Besides, what exactly makes you think that it is mostly the work of JR East anyway? (Besides with all the things that have went down with JR Hokkaido) [/lolnospoiler]

>>834081
>implying they can afford all of this
Then again, they're not publicly trading so they can probably get away with a lot of things. Considering the lines which are slowly dropping off, it does make me wonder how much they're pulling in

Or maybe they'll put JR East crew in all E5 runs past Aomori so that nothing gets smashed like a past incident on their trains

Snow in Japan!!! i always thought Japan was a tropical country, next thing someone gonna tell me there japanese skiiers :D..
>>
>>837847
The winters are dry humidity wise (it will rain anyway) and it can snow just about everywhere except Okinawa
Winters are survived in most places using humidifiers and aircon (if you're staying in a hotel, the death machine called a kerosene heater at a house I guess)
It's not tropical but the summers are brutal anyway with Singapore tier humidity, especially in places of high concrete mass, which triggers things like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n732oeU2mPA
The key to survival is aircon. Just set it to something like 18 and sit there (hotels are concrete so there aren't really any other options, unless you're at some house then you'd probably want to do ghetto insulation)
And yes they have ski resorts. JR East owns one of the big ones altogether. Gala Yuzawa

They only have double decker cars to be used as Green Car for the long distance commuter services as those lack standing room, and only having 2 doors per side does not help the problem of loading and unloading a large amount of passengers in one minute.

Fun Fact: For the Yamanote Line E231 series, each 11 car sets used to have 2 cars that have 6 doors per side instead of the usual 4 for the rest of the cars. However, those 6 door cars were scrapped and replaced by 4 door cars due to having to standardize the door spacings to fit platform barriers and to accomdate E233 series whenever they have to share platforms

Narrow gauge DDEMUs are considerably difficult to engineer, additionally since the Japanese wire height loading gauge is lower. The prime example of a majority narrow gauge DDEMU is the JR215 which operates Interurban runs (kind of like the Sydney suburban, Takasaki Line, Tokaido Main, Sobu, etc. just all seats reserved because it's a Liner service). Even that isn't a full DDEMU because they had to fit the equipment somewhere. The driving cars are single decker with a raised floor to fit the traction equipment while the first and last 2 cars are motor cars. In Sydney, the norm is to fit the equipment in the roof, but in this case it isn't possible due to the lack of space and existing space already being taken up by aircon units
On another hand, there were some issues in execution and intent I guess. The JR215 uses narrow doors and gangways like on the JR suburban Green Cars which really isn't set up for commuter crush (something which the usual 4door single decker cars that go through Tokyo are designed for first and foremost and the Sydney DD can somewhat handle due to 2m wide doors, deliberately angled stairways, mixed seating and so forth)
I've always taken the 215 to be kind of an attempt at trying to copy the Sydney DDEMU design but falling into the traps of mistakes made in Sydney designs (especially the Tangara) during the 1980s without copying the benefits. Namely - use of deprecated traction technology even though VVVF was already becoming widespread in Japan and fixed seating on non Green Cars (where transverse seating is available in Japan, you can usually flip or spin the seats, same thing in Sydney, except for the Tangara and C sets). It also had other (non Sydney) faults like the aforementioned doors and poor acceleration

>>844925
Perhaps the other thing to be considered is that 6 doors wasn't a massive improvement over 4 doors due to the nature of platform crowding. Although there were car capacity increases as the seats could be folded up
>>
>>845009

>Platform crowding

I don't think they can fix that even if they have all the money in the world since widening the platforms might cause too many disruptions

Back to the one ofs, this is the JR Kyushu KiHa 72 DMU which was purpose built to suppliment the KiHa 71 DMU (which was converted from older DMUs) used in the Yufuin no Mori Ltd. Express service. According to JR Kyushu they will add a fifth car into the set starting from July 18th this year

Also the 215 series DDEMU doesn't look particularly comfortable either, especially if you are really tall

California's "colors' are technically red and white. Or when it comes to railroading, red and orange (think Daylight Limited). AC chose blue and yellow for their regular rolling stock because it looks good on regular trains.

Lots of Japanese made trains are like that, with external stuff botched onto the roof. I noticed it on their export 395s. Seems like it's just the jap style for trains.
>>
>>857897 What are the tumors on top for?

Those tumors are the only thing keeping us peon commuters being crushed like sardines in a can alive in the death heat of Tokyo summertime. More accurately, they seem to believe fairing the air conditioner unit ends with roof fairings, but otherwise keeping the existing rectangular-ish air conditioner unit design would create low pressure regions over the center of the aircon unit, providing added draft to the heat exchanger radiator fan, Which sorta makes sense, but I'd rather they simply do a continuous roofline like the green car doublestacks with two aircon units, because what the interior needs more of is not not raw cooling power (which it already has enough of) but more internal air movement fan power in the interior, which can only reasonably be accommodated by adding additional internal fans, which might fit into that added roof space. Heck, putting in some kind of air dam system to flush cold air down from above an open door would do wonders..

I love the Javelins, I quite regularly go for days out in Canterbury just so I can ride them and go past the depot.

Standard practice in Japan on most trains is to have everything traction/computer related under the floor and the aircon up top. The reasoning is to keep the centre of mass as low as possible for stability (although the aircon unit is heavy enough that JR East papers have noted that it can make a difference in running but it's no big deal)
The exceptions being modern Shinkansen and some older limited express trains, especially tilting ones which have the aircon under the floor

Easier maintenance. You just undo the mountings and lift it off

>>857901
Hankyu puts some effort into hiding them behind fairings. But the thing about places beyond Tokyo is that they usually don't have Linedeliers (that big vent in the middle which blows air down more directly. Although I'm also aware of some newer Tokyo Metro trains like the 10000 not having them either). However, the heat distribution may be more even as most west of Tokyo seem to prefer having 2 smaller aircon units rather than a single big one. But then Linedeliers seem to be more common on newer commuter trains in West Japan now anyway.
>>
>>858284

THe Linedeliers are okay if you are near the output tube from an aircon, but on the face of it it's just a rotary barrel fan with oscillating guide vanes, if you aren't near a cool spot it doesn't help as much. They really need to but two rows near the curved space above the luggage racks rather than a single center line. The human body heat of the smooshed commuters around me is painful, especially all the salarymen in their suits, because that's contact conducting the heat.

If you love digging through data and stuff, Japan Railfan Magazine (a Japanese monthly publication of railway news, data, and what not) has an annual extra publication in the July issue that lists out detailed rolling stock inventory for the JR group of companies. If you can read Moon you can probably figure out the ratios from the data, but my initial answer on that EMU outnumbers DMU (besides Hokkaido and Shikoku) still stands

ISHYGDDT Japan

On the strange topic of customized trains, JR Kyushu converted 2 older KiHa 47 series DMU into "ARU Ressha" (ARU is actually an acronym for Amazing, Royal, and Universal), which runs 2 2-hour one way trips in certain days, food and drinks are provided on board. It costs quite a bit though at 20,000+ Yen per person

Design wise it is definitely more elaborate compared to the Orange Resturant

With the Hokutosei just finished its last run and the end for Casseopia and Hanamasu are probably not far behind (when the Hokkaido Shinkansen finally opens), would it basically means the end of regular overnight train services besides Sunrise Seto/Izumo?

Hmm?
http://www.yurikamome.tokyo/fare_ticket/fare/

Although noting fares in general. It is somewhat amusing how the change in tax fucked the ticket prices to the point where in some cases tickets are cheaper than using an IC card since it'd be rude to set paper ticket prices down to the yen
And government/small systems tend to be more pricey. Chiba monorail is more expensive

In the meantime, a steam loco running alongside an E3 Shinkansen. All the Yamagata ones are 2000s era and IGBT driven so they've still got some years left but I wonder what their replacement would be (Toreiyu foot spa train aside)
>>
>>865124

>Hanshin 5000s

And speaking of which, Hanshin is now introducing the 5700 series to gradually replace them starting next year

http://railf.jp/news/2015/08/25/180000.html

>>867920

It'll probably take quite a while for them to replace the E3s since the E3-2000s are less than 10 years old (built in late 2000s to replace the 400 Series) and the remaining 3 sets of E3-1000s are new enough (the first two sets built from the late 90s were scrapped recently)

And now time for more "fancy trains converted from older train sets", this time it is JR West's turn with the Hanayome no Ren (lit. Bride's Love) converted from 2 KiHa 48 DMUs. It will run between Kanazawa and Wakura-Onsen and service will begin October 3rd.

It's rather confusing that the word "line" is used to describe physical railway lines, sections of those lines, and train services.
>>
>>870554
For example see:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C5%8Dhoku_Main_Line
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utsunomiya_Line
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dnan-Shinjuku_Line
>>
>>870582

Well, using "line" to describe sections and train services in addition to physical lines didn't really start until the privatization of JNR began and even then there are only three of them that are prominent (Utsunomiya, JR Kyoto, and JR Kobe lines). And for the Shonan-Shinjuku and Ueno-Tokyo Lines, the word Line is actually written in katakana instead of kanji since those are services that run through multiple lines

Welp, time for the "God of Death" (for densha-otas in Japan) to make its appearence. This is JR East's EF64-1031 DC locomotive, which is stationed in Nagaoka Rolling Stock Center along iwth -1030 and -1032. They are equiped with special couplers to transport EMUs, which they either newly manufactured EMUs from J-TREC's Niitsu factory near Niigata to Tokyo area or transport old EMUs from Tokyo area to the Nagano Rolling Stock Center to either be modified or scrapped (which is where the nickname comes from).

Pic related as it is seen transported the one-off E331 EMU from Keiyo RSC to Nagano RSC for scrapping

Impatiently waiting the day an N700 successor appears. It's been 8 years but the N700A means it's probably been pushed back at least another 5 years so we won't see anything until 2020 or later I guess
>>

>Steady stream of replies

More like just me, you, and random assortment of denize/n/s

Considering the speed limit for the Tokaido Shinkansen will probably stay at 285 km/h due to all the curves and noise concerns unless the government somehow let them run at 300 km/h, can they really make it even more aerodynamic without sacrificing capacity? (Which basically became standardized starting from the 300 Series with 1323 seats)

[lolnospoiler]More importantly they are basically running out of 3-digit numbers already since 9XX are reserved for experimental sets, so the next mass produced sets will probably have to be called C1/W1 or something[/lolnospoiler]

With the end of the Hokutosei service and the cars being used are either being sold or scrapped, this basically marked the end of the era of Blue Trains after it first began service 58 years with the Asakaze (Tokyo ~ Hakata). You can always search videos on youtube using 近鉄大阪線 and see what you can find, although you will have to ignore the ones with 近鉄南大阪線

On the topic of Farewell / Last Run events (since the Japanese loves these), JR Kyushu will have events to send off its last 485 Series Express EMU set (Do32) from the JNR Era. With the presumed scrapping of that set after October 18th (the actual Last Run event), it'd leave JR East as the only operator of the "Rice Cooker" 485s from the JNR Era

For the three people who are still reading this thread, East JR / JR Hokkaido are beginning to finalize the service details for the Hokkaido Shinkansen. Service officially begins on March 26th, 2016 and there will be 13 regular round trips from Shin-Hakodate Hokuto as follows

Tokyo: 10 Hayabusa Round Trips
Sendai: 1 Hayabusa Round Trip
Morioka: 1 Hayate Round Trip
Shin-Aomori: 1 Hayate Round Trip

For the new terminus at Shin-Hakodate Hokuto, all 12 (Super) Hokuto round trip services between Hakodate and Sapporo will stop at the new station and the dia will be tweaked for interchaging with the new Shinkansen service. The Hakodate Liner will also begin with 16 round trips between Shin-Hakodate Hokuto and Hakodate as a shuttle service.

Naturally with the new Shinkansen service, this means the (Super) Hakucho, Hanamasu, and Cassiopeia will officially cease services on March 21st, 2016 as JR Hokkaido will have to finalize the switch from ATC-L to DS-ATC in the Seikan Tunnel from the 22nd to 25th.

Seibu Railways have decided to have multiple events that incorporate beer and trains, what could possibly go wrong? (This isn't a new thing) The following PDFs are in Moon, so here are the basic gists of them:

Event 1: Mystery Beer Train with Kirin Beer

From October 1st to 4th, some of the 4-car 2000 series EMUs will be decorated into what essentially to be a "bar train" to run in three different routes for 2 hours. Here are some of the things of note

- The EMUs themselves have no washrooms since they are commuter trains
- Since it is a "Mystery Train", it won't be announced when it is running (people might still catch a glimpse when it goes past though)
- All you can drink Kirin beer for 2 hours and food will be provided
- Tickets are only available for 2 or 3 persons, so no you can't go alone

http://www.seibu-group.co.jp/railways/news/news-release/2015/__icsFiles/afieldfile/2015/09/07/20150907beer.pdf

Event 2: Midnight Express Tour with Yebisu (Sapporo) Beer

On November 6th and 28th, there are two seperate tours that departing from Seibu Ikebukuro to Seibu Chichbu in midnight to visit the Mitsumine Shrine to view the sea of clouds during sunrise, and there are three different tours after sunrise. You only get 1 hour of all you can drink beer though

I liked those bright green trains. Any idea what they will use for the Hakodate Liner?
>>
>>881810

According to JR Hokkaido they are building 4 733-1000 Series EMUs to provide the Liner service, which also means the lines between the stations will be electrified. As far as the 789 Series EMU goes they will replace 27 out of 37 785 Series EMU for the Sapporo area. The PDF they published indicates that they are replacing quite a lot of things in the near future

http://www.jrhokkaido.co.jp/press/2015/150320-1.pdf

- KiHa 183-0 Series DMUs from the JNR Era are being phased out and replaced by additional KiHa 261 Series DMUs
- Designing new local use DMUs to replace KiHa 40 Series DMUs from the JNR Era
- Replacing the rest of the KiHa 183 Series DMU, 281 Series DMU, and 283 Series DMU (Since the development of the new KiHa 285 Series was canned, they might just standardize and build more KiHa 261s)
- The above point for the 789 Series EMU
- Replacing older 721 Series EMUs from the late 1980s
>>

Very common for metro systems made by Frenchies. That is not the case for the Yurikamome in Japan however.

Check out this wiki article:

there are some pretty slick things that can be done with rubber tyred metros, the Lausanne 2 line being the best example.
