/mu/ , Which album are essential for the progressive rock?
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Yes - Close to the Edge
Rush - A Farewell to Kings
Genesis - Foxtrot
Procol Harum - A Salty dog
there's the basic entry level, but if you like it you are obligated to check out each one of those bands, there's pure gold in their other releases.
then once you have a good feel for prog, check out krautrock
Pic related is also a very good intro to italian prog. Semiramis - Dedicato A Frazz

If you want to listen to something different for once
>>66477176
If only I want to focus in Jethro Tull, which album you recomend?
>>66477356
Thick as a Brick
Aqualung
A Passion Play
Minstrel in the Gallery
Songs from the Wood
Ian Anderson also has a few solo albums he put out recently:
Thick as a brick 2: Whatever Happened to Gerald Bostock?
Homo Erraticus

thanks anon
>>66477356
Aqualung
Thick as a Brick
A Passion Play
Songs from the Wood
in that order
>>66477176
Good list. I would add some ELP. Maybe Tarkus or BSS
>>66476808
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King
Soft Machine - Third
Yes - Fragile
Can - Tago Mago
Aphrodite's Child - 666
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
King Crimson - Red
Rush - Hemispheres
To add to the above...
Van Der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts
Genesis - Foxtrot
Camel - Mirage
>>66478893
>Piper at the Gates of Dawn
>prog
i'm actually curious as to why you think this. i need an explanation, this is compelling
If you actually dig through Magma's discography I think that's probably all you need prog-wise.
>>66478428
I wonder why Soft Machine - The Soft Machine never gets mentioned.
>>66480420
Christ I'm amazed that was the first mention of Magma. COME ON GUYS
>>66480497
Cause they're either difficult listening (Third) or sound like a less catchy Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd (First)?
>>66480509
im french and can see them for 12 bucks a concert, that the good thing with normi culture, iv seen them 24 times,28 yo
>>66477356
Add Heavy Horses to the lists the other two gave you. Just check out the title track on Youtube. It's easily one of their best songs, top 3 at least. And make sure you get an edition with the bonus tracks, cause Broadford Bazaar is a really beautiful summary of everything Tull does well.
>>66476808
>>66480497
I always recommend Volume One and Third to people. Wyatt-era Soft Machine is really damn good if you can get past the weirdness.
>>66480536
Third isn't that difficult if you have a little patience, and there are some fantastic sections in it that could stand as songs on their own. Minutes 8-12 of Slightly All the Time come to mind.
>dat groove
>>66480509
because OP is clearly new to prog and is asking for entry level essentials, why would you dump the craziest shit in the genre on him?
I know Keyboard based rock is hated in the current year but you should at least listen to Tarkus - ELP just the actual Tarkus song
>>66478428
Do albums like Peter Gabriel's 3rd or King Crimson - "Discipline" count as prog? (I've always considered them new wave prog)
>>66482946
>I know Keyboard based rock is hated in the current year
By plebs, maybe. Tarkus is the shit.
>>66477176
Why would anybody wantt o listen to shitty italian prog?
>>66477176
>Semiramis - Dedicato A Frazz
I decided to hear this and I gotta say, it's fucking fantastic.
>>66480275
link is kill. Piper is not prog
>>66478893
To people just always cite Fragile instead of Close to the Edge in order to avoid seeming redundant? Fragile was made from scratch in order to finance a bunch of mini moogs for Rick Wakeman. I think that anything they did in 1971 was bound to be amazing no matter what, but still, Fragile was just Yes warming up to make Close to the Edge, both creatively and economically.
>>66479065
I think he thinks it's prog because a few of the members who played on it later formed a prog band under the same name.
>>66476808
pic related and >>66485355 are masterpieces in every sense of the word
Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink
They're really entry level yet I never see anyone talk about them. This is one of the best songs i've heard.

>No Colors from Between the buried and me
This chart sucks.
>>66486882
the yes album is better than both imo desu
>>66477869
>>66477715
stop right fucking there
jethro tull managed gold from about 1967 to 1982 and ignoring the run from this was to benefit verges on the criminal
i will even go so far as to say there's parts of 'A' that manage to be alright and TAAB2 was about as good as you could ask from ian this far removed from the original and based on his usually very pleasant solo output
but FUCK HOMO ERRATICUS that shit was the WORST don't saddle the guy with that fucking turd i swear i would listen to under wraps front to fucking back 10 times before ever touching that thing again
>>66487821
It's great, and probably better than Fragile, but it's definitely not better than Close to the Edge. I'm not sure why people seem so determined to declare things as "better than Close to the Edge." I feel like it wouldn't happen if Close to the Edge weren't so obviously their best work. I feel like if anyone has an objective best album it's Yes. The Yes Album through Close to the Edge showed Yes pushing their composition skill further and further towards it's limit, and each one built steadily towards their peak, even if Fragile was somewhat faulty as an album. The best tracks on that make it a near 10/10 regardless. But anyway, I feel like everybody knows that it was all leading up to Close to the Edge, unless you got fooled by Tales From Topographic Oceans, where they completely throw composition and structure to the wind, and the objective is no longer what heights they can achieve through their compositional skills but how to fill four sides of vinyl with "deep," "heavy" prog opuses. But yeah, stop with this whole "[x Yes album] is better than Close to the Edge" meme.
>>66488006
I never said that the yes album was objectively better, just my personal opinion.
Honestly I think it's because most prog fans overplay close to the edge so much when they first discover it, that it loses it's appeal.
>>66483458
You just answered your own question "New wave Prog" is still Prog Rock
>>66481644
No, that album was bad
Good Apollo 1 is the most prog Coheed album
>>66478428
>No Yeti
How do you even allow yourself to DO that.
Prog GOAT for you right here OP
>>66487296
teenage wank
>>66489584
Canterbury >>>>>>>>> Krautrock
>>66490756
wank core
>>66491040
>>66489584
krauts, canterbury and RIO are mostly second-semester prog
>>66491093
second-semester?
Why are The Nice, Patrick Moraz, and Rick Wakeman rarely mentioned in any prog threads? I think Rick is the best prog musician ever, Moraz is the best keyboardist, and The Nice is the most influential prog band in history.
>>66481644
>that cover art
really man???
>>66491061
>wank
How so?
This music is carefully composed by the legend Richard Harvey
fuck this album is so good im jizzing right now
never listened to in the court of the crimson king since i use spotify - got my hands on it today though and it's gotta be one of the ebst things i've listened to
