Hey /mu/, who was the greatest drummer of all time? I think Tony Williams, but I'm just one guy.

Bill bruford

>I should say Meg White, that would be original and hilarious
Maybe not objectively best, but I've always loved Jimmy Chamberlain:

yeah it's Tony Williams. Especially if you're taking "influence" into account. Elvin Jones is a pretty close second though.

EMERGENCY!
Jaki Liebezeit

this is a good answer too

Totally man. As much as I love Tony with Miles, Emergency is when Tony went from being a master player, to being Tony Williams.
Neil Pert
or that guy in Weezer

Bruford is probably the best rock drummer. Keith Moon might be second. Still neither of them comes close to someone like Tony Williams or Elvin Jones.

Bruford is a jazz drummer
>>66477528
Yeah he made some ok jazz fusion records but listen to those and then listen to Tony with Miles or Elvin with Coltrane.
Bruford is doing kid stuff in comparison. Don't get me wrong, I love Bruford. I'm an amateur drummer (piano is my main instrument) and I play in a jazz fusion group but I was figuring out the shit that Bruford was doing when I was 15 but really great jazz drummers still mystify me.

i recommend listening to the song indiscipline by king crimson, if you think Bruford is doing "Kid stuff"
not sure if he's the greatest, but he's definitely my favorite.
that would be damon che, george hurley is also up there.

Yeah I'm well familiar with that song. Probably in my top 10 KC songs. Bruford's absolute best work was with Yes imo. Fragile and CTTE. His work with KC is pretty good and so is his Earthworks stuff but he was best as a prog rock drummer.
But have you listened to Sorcerer by Miles Davis? I don't think a drummer and a bass player have ever had so much chemistry.

Only valid answer to be completely honest family
In a Deep Purple kind of way, I'd say the guy from Skull Snaps for inventing one of the most iconic and reused beats of all time

In a virtuoso kind of way I like Greg Saunier:
