I also thought once that I can't play by ear but I did it a lot to improve and now I can transcribe Jazz solos. EVERYONE can develop this. And it worth it, just don't give up so easily and believe in yourself (as much cliche as it sounds).
Also don't know if you're a king crimson fan, but know that Robert Fripp was literally tone deaf.

how did you learn to play it by ear? i dont know if its my headphones or what but i have a hard time picking out the bass especially in more energetic rock songs where multiple guitars and drums and vocals complicate it more

It just takes some time. Try the most easy things like one nation army or Hey bulldog. Also for me it's harder to play things by ear with headphones, it's much easier to me with speakers.
