I remember one critic that really nailed down the problem with Christian music: It's music by and for people who have the answer to everything, and that doesn't lead to good art most of the time.
I think that's why bands like Skillet, though they're mediocre in standards of mainstream rock, are more highly regarded as Christian artists. They still sing about God and Christianity, but they still have fear, anger, and sadness in their music, just in those religious connotations.

People believe that by participating in Christianity, they will live for eternity in paradise after they die, and the Christian music industry is getting rich by making people believe that partaking in Christianity includes listening to their music. The idea is that the "Christian Experience" includes listening to their music, just like how the publicity team behind Mumford and Sons wants to make people believe that the "Young, Somewhat Sophisticated Liberal Experience" includes listening to Mumford and Sons. I'm a devout Christian and don't like Christian music at all. I prefer gospels if anything. I don't think the subject matter lends itself to contemporary music. However, I believe that if an artist mentions God in their music they should do it tastefully. Some rap songs or rock songs that mention God do it in a reflective way but don't harp on it. There is something to be said of modest praise.
