First of all, the early 00's were some of the best years for hip hop. The "real" golden age is 96-03. It's only after the late 90's wave of rappers became overly commercial and boring when mainstream hip hop turned to shit.
Mid 00's were kinda bad, but like >>66419272 says it was the golden age of the underground. Fucking DOOM and OX, Rhymesayers and Anticon, all that. Even mainstream rap had its saviors: early Kanye, Common, Lupe, Kweli, and such.
The real-real-bad period was the late 00's to early 10's - when many of the biggest artists nowadays has started to appear, but haven't really made anything worthwhile. With a few standout albums, and maybe shit like OF, 08-13 were a wasteland.
Right now I'd say an exceptional amount of significant hip hop albums are being released every year, both underground and in the mainstream, with a huge diversity of styles. I hope it will last at least until the end of this decade.

I think rap music now is a lot more diverse and you can find pretty much every sub genre of rap now. 90's boombap is cool but it gets old after awhile. 90's funk is the same way.
Now rappers are fusing different parts of genres which in my opinion brings a whole new "freshness" to the genre
