drop a hefty amount of acid and refrain from showering for a few weeks

Listen to and become familiar with their three earliest live records (Live/Dead, Skull and Roses, and Europe '72) and also their studio albums from the debut in 1967 up to And including Blues For Allah. In my opinion, their studio work after that isn't as good although there are some great songs from that period. Once you get a handle on those records, I would probably lookup some good soundboard recordings of some of their shows on Archive.org or whatever it's called. They have a huge database of Live Dead recordings. You may want to look up some opinions as to what live period is their best but even that is a subjective opinion, so my best advice is to just jump right in and find which live periods you enjoy more than others.

American Beauty is their only good studio album. On par with Astral Weeks IMO. Anthem of the Sun and Blues For Allah seem a little bit /mu/core stylistically. Also try Dark Star or St Stephen from Live/Dead

Drop acid or get really stoned on a sunny day.
Some of their songs are still too corny for me, but most of them are actually well written, some of their live performances are really good too.
>>
Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are their only albums worth listening to.

through winnie the pooh mostly... tbqh

1974 live recordings.
Workingmans Dead and all 72-78 live renditions.
Aoxomoxoa is absolutely essential.
Wake of The Flood is really good, Bob Weir isn't entirely fucking useless for once.

This is all you need

There are multiple s/t albums iirc, the one that guy was talking about was the 1971 live album, which isn't great, so idk why he was reccing to start with

Basically, listen to a lot of live shows.

Google what some of the best shows are and download them from archive.org or soulseek or whatever.

At first it'll probably just sound like sloppy country rock, and you'll wonder why it has a cult-like following.

But basically, you need to familiarize yourself a little with the songs, how they go. Then, as you listen to the different shows, you'll start to hear the weird way they mutate and oscillate outward in this really cosmic way - it's in the differences in how a song sounds across every show. The really particular, odd zones that the jams go into, and the unique energy each show has, etc.

Also, listen to it with ears more like you're listening to ambient or electronic music: as sensory, wallpaper music that you're supposed to trip out on. That's the way they're supposed to be listened to, this is how you 'get' them. They actually have REALLY good songs, too, but the point is more the sensory/ecstatic experience.

Of course, this can be aided with head drugs - with weed, mushrooms, lsd. I won't recommend those, I've seen too many people burn out taking that path. But you can still appreciate sensory-porn 'drug' music if you just learn how to listen to it.
