Redpill me on video game music.

Why is it inferior to the music most discussed on this board?
>>
Video game music is intended to be secondary to the actual game. It is merely an ingredient of something greater, so it isn't meant to stand on its own.

Great music should be so dynamic it stands on its own, without any assistance from another medium.

I fucking love this song, but it was licensed, so it doesn't really count.

What about the arrangements though?

Is video game music inferior in terms of musical complexity?

It's meant to be ignored, or at most, given only mild attention. That's why every videogame soundtrack feels lifeless, it has no direction to it and you can tell. Of course there are exceptions (apparently the Minecraft soundtrack is really good ambient, and I love the Silent Hill soundtracks), but those are by far the answers. Also, most video game players aren't interested in music like we listen to here.
>>
>>66287091
not necessarily. No single musical genre is automatically worse than another.

However, video game music is often intended to not be noticeable, so it avoids complexity for the most part.

Of course, there are exceptions.

Fuck off

it's like any other music
>>
What's the most complex video game music? Serious question, I'm very curious.
>>
Any kind of soundtrack music should be avoided.
>>
>>66287110
There are many, many games where music is central to the game. The Silent Hill soundtracks are great because the Silent Hill games are about atmosphere, and without the sound and music design the games have, they wouldn't be half as effective at achieving their goals.

In addition to this, in some cases the music not only adds to atmosphere, but actually enhances and adds depth to the character of the world. A great example of this is the Nier soundtrack, where each area had music drawing from the fictional cultural stylings of that area, and even had lyrics in an accompanying fictional languages that sounded close to the tongues they were based in.

Video game music is diverse as any other form of music, so it's not really a question you could give a definitive answer to

Well skyrims theme is sung in a made up language to go with the orchestral backing.

Skyrim's theme comfirmef for Zeuhl?

Well I'm more or less just curious to what people consider complex VGM.
Back when I was in high school I thought that Dancing Mad was the greatest piece ever in a video game because it was structured as a four movement organ concerto but later on I realized it was bland and repetitive with little harmonic progression. So yeah I'm just asking for opinions as to what can be considered "complex" (as general of a term as that is) VGM.

It's not inferior, but there is a stereotype that if you are interested in game music it must be because you're an uncultured shit who cannot into music that is unrelated to his precious video games, similar to 14-year olds who listen to nothing but anime opening themes

Pic related soundtrack is top-tier.
SMT is my favorite vidya series of all time but that does not really change my opinion.

The battle tracks are all heavy and have distorted vocals, I mean, the fucking normal battle theme sounds like you're fighting a boss.

"This day just can't get that much worse
Please, return to human being
Whatever doesn't impress it unto me
Please make this a real world"

"I'm heaven above outside you
I have your back to the wall
Survived the fall from grace
Drink of the wine of the wrath of god
One more god rejected!"

"We'll sacrifice the son of heaven
Man's greatest glimpse of fire red
Oh how they're lost in their prayers for our greatest god
Let me sleep, please! I am a man, half human
I am tired as heart and person weaken"

The OST is edgy as fuck but I love it.

Music is music, doesn't matter if it's in a movie, game, or whatever. As with all things it should be judged on it's own merits

Anyone play Space Funeral or listen to the soundtrack? The game is kinda pretentious and some of the soundtrack too, but it's pretty great regardless.

I think atmospher tends to be the main strength of VGM rather than complexity, but a guess the Umineko OST has some decently complex compositions.

Is one of those threads were OP is here just to ridicule anyone who tries to star a conversation.

We used to call it trolling, now nobody seems to remember to sage and ignore this threads.

Putting aside VGM themselves, there are so many great video game remix and tribute albums and songs out there. One of my favourite mixes here, uses samples from dozens of the sound effects and BGM from Yume Nikki
