Replaced movies with TV since I don't really watch movies much
>>
>>66237806
I went in and I knew absolutely nothing about the movie, and I seriously thought it was a documentary until a while into the film.
The people in that movie are so fucking REAL it's not even funny. Sometimes i'll watch a movie and be like "huh, this person is a good actor". The people in this movie don't even seem like actors. Every emotion in that entire film i felt full-heartedly, and I continue to see Satantango characters in everyday people. It's an absolute masterpiece in every regard, and the length was not only warranted but necessary to achieve the immersion and feeling it manages to achieve
Also the cinematography, my god. A muddy field has never looked so fucking good.

>things being obscure/non-obvious/hidden makes them better

i'm legitimately worried this is a meme that will never end
>>
>>66239136
I'll start off saying I like it well enough, I just think 2001 is in another tier of cinema altogether.

But for reasons I don't really like it as much as people who praise it as the greatest film ever;
Tarantino is pretty entry level in my opinion. He's done good films, but he's so in love with himself and his way of writing dialogue, and I never really appreciated it.

I saw it too late. I knew most of the dialogue by heart before my first viewing due to pop culture references, parodies and the like.

Also as a spin on the too late part, non-chronological storytelling isn't as riveting today as it was then, which was one of the major innovations with the film once it came out.

As it stands, I think it's a perfectly enjoyable 7-8/10. It's on the same tier as films like Fight Club, Shawshank Redemption, Interstellar. They're in my opinion great for (and loved by) people who are interested in cinema not as an artform but as entertainment.
>>
>>66239279
unfortunately I'm much older than that
>>
>>66239187
I'll admit I preferred the movie as well, although the film doesn't compare to my movie favourites. When it comes to books, I just don't really read that much, and the story is still really fucking gripping so it remains my favourite.
>>
>>66239337

>>
>>66239334

I've read around thirty books (I could probably list them if you gave me the time) in some dull attempt to become smarter and "expand my horizons".
It was vanity that lead me to books and I wasted so much fucking time reading them, not a single one stood out to me in any way, shape or form.
Hours wasted reading books and these were all considered "classics" in some way. They were all boring and were actually better when I watched them adapted to film (at least one was I think).

The fact is reading is something people do to feel more accomplished, they need to feel like they've been through some kind of pain to feel successful in this world. Unfortunately its fleeting and anything gained from reading is lost to the annals of age and what is gained from reading is found through living anyway and is found much faster by just using your mind.

So what's the point?

I can see you're angry because I've angered you.
I've obviously described you perfectly and now you're defending the time you've wasted on books like a man defending his purchase of an oven that only grills food.

What you think of as "OMG PROJECTING MUCH????!!!!" is actually just another human being able to identify a symptom of being human. If you've had a cold before and you see someone with a runny nose don't you think to yourself, "ahh he must have a runny nose too".

That's what I'm doing, except instead of accepting your current condition and moving on with life you're denying them out of the dedication to the time wasted on reading.
>>
>>66244350
Books are not made so internet intellectuals can post them on their charts to feel accomplished. Books exist because it is a medium that allows one to communicate their ideas and stories through their respective tongues. There's no pretension to be had.

Third off, children's drawings/finger paintings are actually the largest and most vast artistic medium on Earth.
Why aren't you paying more attention to them?

>>
>>66245629
considering the practice of having children make art is actually very recent (up until very recent times children were not encouraged to do artistic things, instead depending on their family's wealth they would either have to work or study)
literature however is as old as writing, and thus the amount of works in that field of art is vastly more important.

it's inherently an inartistic medium. the more "artistic" video games become, the less they become video games. that's because in order to force a game to become art, you need to overshadow the core of what defines the medium (gameplay) with the merits of other mediums such as digital art, cinema, music, literature, etc.

I absolutely agree, the last paragraph got muddled up a bit. I did note Tarantino as entry level in the second paragraph, but you're right that compared to blockbusters, it's art.

They're the middleground between entertainment and art, as a better description perhaps. Nothing wrong with that, I enjoy pretty much all of the films in this "category".

Not true at all, you should read up on aesthetic theory and the concept of aesthetic unity, it will help you understand what makes videogames (including the original SMB, which i consider to be a fantastic game) art rather than toys. You do not have to overshadow the gameplay with anything and most of the games and most of the games i would put on my list are nothing more than original, aesthetically unified and well-presented gameplay. Play some of these, see what im talking about. Everything contributes towards the same aesthetic goal and the gameplay is never overshadowed by clunky exposition or cutscenes:
-2x0ng by David O'Toole
-86856527 by Michael Brouge
-helixDX by Wattles
If you want something a bit better thats not as entrenched in gaming conventions, try Joy Exhibition by Strangethink too

how is the gameplay of Melee or Mario Maker overshadowed by anything? those are pure gameplay without the pretenses of anything else

and the sort of fast, technical, precise and seamless gameplay they present is a lot more appealing to me than stuff like color matching and "a short bullet hell set to the music of Sapphire Shores"

the sort of games i consider great are those with engines that can be pushed to extraordinary heights.

yoshi's island is aesthetically extraordinary btw
>>
>>66253327
>how is the gameplay of Melee or Mario Maker overshadowed by anything?
i didnt say it is? i was responding to you talking about how a game has to overshadow the gameplay elements with other things to become art by giving you 4 games that are art but also purely gameplay at all points with nothing else.

Melee or Mario Maker have a very bland visual aesthetic and unoriginal gameplay. They are not art, just shitty little toys for children. Yoshi's Island, as I already said earlier, does have something going for it but it is cluttered and messy. The gameplay is also heavily heavily entrenched in unoriginal tropes that make it something i would never put in even my top 100.

>and the sort of fast, technical, precise and seamless gameplay they present is a lot more appealing to me than stuff like color matching and "a short bullet hell set to the music of Sapphire Shores"
thats fine but its still plebby and you shouldn't get upset about it being plebby. it's like me saying "I only like fast, technical, precise and seamless thrash metal, it is more interesting to me than stuff like minimalism or "an experimental rock band which came out of the Hamburg music scene in the late sixties""
see! i sound like a pleb if i say that

seemed like an oddly specific thing to mention; i assumed you were describing the games you called "pleb" that i like.
>Melee or Mario Maker have a very bland visual aesthetic
oh right, they should be more like pic related, right? so ~minimal~
>unoriginal gameplay
meanwhile you refer me to a game that's a generic bullet hell.

i thought it was "aesthetic unity" that made things good, and now it's innovation? Melee perfected its franchise's gameplay and is, as far as i'm concerned, the pinnacle of gameplay for both fighting games and party games.

Mario Maker has literally no limit to its gameplay.
it can range from technical play like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqAoQMIlbmg

to complex puzzles. you can even make a fucking calculator in Mario maker.
>see! i sound like a pleb if i say that
you sound like a pleb if you construct a strawman to sound like a pleb, congratulations.
>>
>>66253536
>oh right, they should be more like pic related, right? so ~minimal~
you're a fucking pleb dude, if you can't appreciate the aesthetic of that game (WHICH IS MORE THAN JUST THE VISUALS BY THE WAY) then i dont even understand how the fuck you have decent music taste. It's not a very complex aesthetic, just a game trying to be wonky and off-kilter. The gameplay, visuals and sound design all have the same goal. That's what aesthetic unity is.

>meanwhile you refer me to a game that's a generic bullet hell.
play it idiot, its not a generic bullet hell. i also specifically recommended you games with a bit of convention in them so you wouldn't spaz out and cry about it not being a game

>i thought it was "aesthetic unity" that made things good, and now it's innovation?
no, read properly. the first post where i mentioned aesthetics i said "original, aesthetically unified and well-presented gameplay". If a game is unoriginal then it can sometimes be good as a work of art (normally only if it is unoriginal for a subversive purpose, although im sure there are games out there that use unoriginal gameplay well in other ways), but more often than not it is going to be shallow entertainment.

>you sound like a pleb if you construct a strawman to sound like a pleb, congratulations
how is that a strawman? I changed mario to thrash metal. It is a direct equivalent to what you are saying. More or less word for word.

i have not played that game. it just seems absurd to be so finicky about what aesthetics you deem "good" while promoting something so transparent and basic, something that seems to lack character, development, or maturity.
>play it idiot
i think i'd rather not take recommendations from you, in all honesty

you namedropped some academia without adequately explaining how it relates to this subject and conversation. you just make sweeping claims all over the place, and rather than incorporating the knowledge you claim to have gained from outside sources into your arguments, you simply namedrop certain phrases.
>how is that a strawman?
because it makes claims i never made and says "look, that's dumb."

if you want to explain why enjoying "technical" gameplay in video games is ideologically equivalent to enjoying "technical" trash metal beyond the same adjective being applied, feel free to elaborate, though.
>>
>>66253736
>i have not played that game
stop opining then
>i think i'd rather not take recommendations from you, in all honesty
ok, i am probably going to stop responding to you after this since i tried to help you understand what i am saying and you couldn't actually be bothered to spend 10 minutes playing a game (which is not very much effort)
>you namedropped some academia without adequately explaining how it relates to this subject and conversation
it is a type of art criticism that i personally feel is the best possible way to evaluate a videogame since a videogame generally combines at least 2 things that are already artforms by themselves, so rather than saying banal shit like "good graphics" it is more valuable to evaluate how the visuals contribute to the game as an aesthetic whole.
>rather than incorporating the knowledge you claim to have gained from outside sources into your arguments, you simply namedrop certain phrases
no i don't, in the post you are responding to i literally gave you a very very condensed aesthetic analysis of 2x0ng
>because it makes claims i never made and says "look, that's dumb."
its not dumb its just plebby. i don't think anyone saying thrash metal is technical is dumb, because plenty of thrash metal is technical (and i assume you are using it in the same sense about mario maker, as in it requires precision and a lot of knowledge about how things work together). One of your top 3 games of all-time is literally paying £40 for ROMhacks because Nintendo needed to recoup some of their Wii-U losses with another mario game. it is ridiculous to try and argue that it has any merit beyond being a toy for children. im not telling you to be ashamed of liking a toy for children, im sure all of us have a couple that we like, but it is plebby.
>>

let's get this stupid strawman out of the way first:

technical guitar work in metal has the perceived merits of confirming the "skill" or ability of the performers.

a video game allowing for technical or high-level play does not demonstrate the "skill" of the game's creators. it does not necessarily relate to the technical ability of the artist. technical gameplay is related to the possible technical ability of the players.

a metal song having "technical" play does not in turn require practice or skill for the listener/consumer to fully experience the work.

in contrast, a game requiring "technical" play requires its player to consume the work differently. it requires a deeper understanding of the engine and mechanics in order to fully experience the work.
>literally paying £40 for ROMhacks
while i am a big fan of Kaizo Mario World, Mario Maker is godsend. it completely unifies everything and puts the "old era" of Mario to rest.

you can see what levels and players are *objectively* superior to others. it has created an arms race to greatness. the fact that there's no limit and things are only accelerating is amazing.

also, the physics engine is based on NSMB rather than previous games, so skills aren't exactly transferable.
>evaluate how the visuals contribute to the game as an aesthetic whole.
can you explain why this is not subjective? i believe that Melee is extremely aesthetically pleasing. the gameplay, when pushed, is something i would easily describe as "beautiful"

Nah, it's one of the most consistent long running mangas out there. Better than HxH, One Punch Man, Attack on Titan, or whatever is the new "hip" series is. I should know since I've read those all (well, I dropped titan since it was so fucking shallow it didn't keep my interest). Way better than the other "big three"-series (again, read them). I would probably say it's even better than Berserk if it wasn't for the amazing art quality of that series, though it's starting to drop now that Miura switched to digital.

To me it just seems you can't see past the fact that it's popular.

I have to admit, it is way better than the other two blights, but it's still a god damn way-too-long Shounen.

I'd also like to clarify that I'm not talking about the manga.

If you want to see how a shounen is done well, check out Soul Eater. It's still not too good, but it's short (still way too fucking long) and actually wraps up really nicely.
>>
>>66254821
Stop trying to larp an adult. I've enjoyed my fair share of seinen series, my favorites being Berserk, Koroshiya 1, Monster, Master Keaton, Vagabond and Vinland. I howewer can also enjoy light topics as long as the series is well thought out and consistent in it's quality and planning, as One Piece in fact is. There is more to manga than just the plot, something you don't really notice when you are just looking for the edgiest "adult" stuff out there. As a digital artist I can even appreciate the drawings and presentation, like panel placement, to a level regular readers don't.

I've read Soul Eater. It was good, but still not as good. I don't remember why I dropped it, will probably read it again in a few years.

I'm usually talking about the manga. Most shonens have shitty anime adaptations, and One Piece might be one of the worst in that regard.
>>
>>66254911
Master Keaton and Vagabond are grimdark shonen? How about getting a real argument?

I'm sorry I don't really enjoy slice of life series about little girls that much.
>>
>>66254920
Okay, well, disregard everything I've said then.

I'd actually recommend watching Soul Eater. It's flawed as fuck, but I think the overall story is all right. It also manages to make one of the biggest cliches of all shounen work in it's ending. I don't want to spoil it, but how the ending works from a structural and story standpoint is brilliant.

Are you just trying to have the last word so you'll feel better? You sound really insecure with all that "growing out" and "adult" talk. If you'd looked at my favorites in other mediums, you'd know that I also appreciate calm and contemplating stuff. Try watching my favorite movie, The Man Without a Past. It has a mugging scene but that's about it for violence.
