This. I was in 7th grade. nu metal was the big thing. I'm listening to this instead.
This got me into listening to full albums, and inspired me to play the guitar
when I was 8 or 9 my older brother made me a mixtape with black sabbath, the strokes, the hives, the ramones, and ac/dc
I easily had the best music in my grade and all my friends would ask to listen to it

My dad owns a bike shop, and i used to hang out there a lot as a kid. When they first opened they were hiring a lot of young people...BMXers etc. They gave me a lot of cool music. Notably Exit Planet Dust but The Chemical Brothers. That was a big eye opener for me.

Sparked? Probably something like disturbed (euck), but this set up a bonfire fire. I've still kept on the prowl for an album that can give me anything close to the same experience I had listening to this for the first time. The atmosphere, the Hypnotic quality it has, the fact that I love every single song on here, the psuedo-story going on between this and Part IV... I just love it. I kinda wish I could go back to the time when I first heard this, where I could listen to an album many times without losing interest and I actually bought CD's with my parent's money.
Quebec by Ween took me back there, and listening to it actually convinced me to leave her for a while and delete my Last.FM as my music taste had become practically a fashion statement where I cared more about how people thought of me than how I actually felt about the music.

Perhaps its just nostalgia goggles, or an appreciation for Daron Malakian (inspired me to pick up guitar) and the other members of the band, but I really don't mind any of their discography.
That said, I don't think anything ever came close to the first album, I love how it throws in polka and salsa and all sorts of weird insane shit.
Listening to some of their really old demos is pretty fun, they were a lot more unhinged back then

Taught me how an album can have a connecting theme, motifs. Now those are the things I look for most in an album for any genre.
Honestly it was probably In Utero, too. I heard All Apologies on the radio when I was like eight, and just got super into Nirvana, eventually read Journals and saw his lists of his favorite albums in there, went through those and found a lot of stuff that I liked a lot

Yeah, and all the other underground '80s stuff, Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, other No Wave, etc etc which branched off into '90s lo-fi stuff, lots of Pavement, Sebadoh, Guided by Voices. All when I was probably 13-14 in rural Minnesota.

Watch Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky. It's 2 and a half hours long, in russian and subtitled, but it changed me.
It's the kind of movie that takes its time, and wants you to think about what it's showing you. Everyone seems to pull something different out of it.

By Alice in chains to come on every single day, I'd wait and wait because I was waiting for the guy to one day say who the artist was. When I was a child I loved The Proclaimers - Sunshine on Leith and wanted it played all the time.
The first band I became obsessive with was Hanson (the album with MMMBop) when I was 9, but the only thing I think I cared about was that the drummer was only 2 years older than me.
When my actual taste in music started to form, the album that kicked things off for me was blink-182 - Enema of the State, when I was 11.
The album that actually got me listening to good music was Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Blank Generation, when I was 15 or 16. My parents also had a box set of The Who that I really loved around then too.

before this, all i listened to was dadrock. then, sort of ironically I guess, my dad took me to see beautiful noise, the shoegaze doc at a local film festival, and I was like "god damn this is cool". also around the same time a friend introduced me to /mu/.
Honestly Gorillaz are a great gateway to more obscure gernes of music. Gorillaz lead me to everything that i listen to nowadays.

One of mom's gay friend who is a fan of The Residents gave me a Sonic Youth DVD with the whole Goo album because I was into Nirvana, and he thought I could like them.
I think that's someway because of him that I ended up lurking this board (and an other friend of her that introduced me to slsk, Melt Banana, but told me that is for "people that stay in their homes and smoke pot instead of partying")
