Boring compared to Sunbather
The appeal of deafheaven is to make black metal more accessible for people who don't listen to it. Just like how training wheels make riding bikes more accessible for people who don't know how to ride a bike; those who actually cycle regularly see those who ride with training wheels and look down upon them.

it's not a matter of that, the looking down part in his post only really justifiably happens when the training wheel kids (of any genre) act haughty about their discovery without ever further exploring the genre, or worse yet of conflating its difference with genre norms as envelope-pushing progression

Anything good you could possibly say about Deafheaven is more true for Liturgy, and even their last album was a fucking dumpster fire.
whole album was cringe
the cheesy piano ending came out of nowhere and felt force.
