They're one of the only bands that ever sold-in in terms of making serious music.
They admit to this too, Lennon and McCartney both said they were originally in it for the money and the girls and got serious about their music after they became world famous.

The Beatles were doing shit way more left field than much of the pop world at the time. They basically made the grown up world take rock music seriously instead of passing it off as a fad for the kids. They took rock from entertainment music to an art form.
