I think it has more to do with the fact that Phil Collins' songs that were played all the time on the radio were mostly his worst material while the actual albums have a lot of hidden gems. So people ended up judging him for shit like Sussudio, the You Can't Hurry Love cover, Against all Odds and so on.
While on the same album You Can't Hurry Love came from, there's completely overlooked good stuff like this:
