It's fantastic, but dark and weird. Honestly I wouldn't suggest it for a first listen.

Heaven or Las Vegas and Four Calendar Cafe are an easier listen...might be better to start with HOLV.

Their album with Harold Budd is also so so good. That might be a good halfway point between these two.

Don't write them off if you don't like this album. They're one of my favourite bands!!!

I always liked Heaven or Las Vegas better, the dark atmosphere of their "goth" albums kind of feels cheesy.

This Mortal Coil were great too. "It'll End in Tears" is such a good album, and it wouldn't be anywhere near what it is without Liz Fraser.

I think this or Head Over Heels would be the best place to start, since most of their good releases (and the excellent EPs!) are in this style. Heaven Or Las Vegas is the only good album in the normal-vocals style (Four-Calendar Cafe and Milk & Kisses are really boring), and their other two styles have only an album (the weird darkwave(?) of their debut) or two (the excellent ambientishness of Victorialand/the Budd record).
