Why can't it be a bit of both? I've only listened to this album once or twice, but I do get the feeling that it is carefully composed. That doesn't mean that it's not grating and annoying, but it does feel calculated in a sense. In general, I think it's an interesting album but ultimately unenjoyable most of the time.

I think it's easy to hear that the players are all very aware of each other's part. They transition between sections quickly but elegantly. To me, the caliber of performance and the constant change in what they're playing keeps the song compelling the whole way through. There are a lot of moments on the album where the parts work together very well, if you listen for it. Sometimes the transitions will reflect the lyrics, as in Dachau Blues. The horn could just sound crazy and random, but when paired with the holocaust imagery, it's a powerful part
