I like it, same for me the productions on drums is a bit strange, I would have put less reverb (especially on cymbals) and would prefer a more punchy and clear snare.
Same for the voice, less reverb and more straight in face would have be nicer. (I really like the passage with the backing growl).

As much as I fucking love groove metal, Anomalies is an absolute masterpiece of songcraft. The way all the riffs are arranged to be as jarring and violent as possible... it FEELS 10x heavy than any other slam album I've heard except 7H Target, Jenovavirus and parts of the Short Bus Pile up full-length

There's a trick for when you lack mics for drums.
You have two, so what I would do is...
Mic the kick properly, it has to be tight af.
Now, put the mic facing the snare side... like above the kick to the snare, but not above the snare, also not completely next to it.
Play with the placement a bit (depends on mic after all) you can get the snare and hi hat and ride and so on all around with good dynamics that way.
Good luck, use a metronome and track drums independent from the rest, and the rest from the drums.

I like the first albums, like many, but MAYH is like top 10 for me, BP would be like top 50 or less, and the rest maybe top 100-200, everything past BP just lost appeal to me, and the fanbase never helped. So I guess I could like everything but I just feel put off by the context, hence why it's a guilty pleasure... not because I think they are shit, but because it's not something I can listen with others and chill or discuss nicely.

Prog, it's hard to not get bored of what you thought were super complicated shit, then you learn theory and see that's it's just riff over a key and soloing over a mode of the key.
I still like some bands, but a lot I come back to and think for fucks sake.
Necrophagist for example, that one I can't listen to it anymore.
Sludge is still comfy, especially because I love driving while listening to it.

I'm sure in the 90s bands like Burzum or Darkthrone seemed novel or even edgy but if you're gonna bother making music, your songwriting needs to be good.
Burzum at least writes good songs, and other black metal bands at the time were trying, but most of that shit is a waste of time.
I'm not even complaining about the production quality and/or choices. I swear to shit it sounded like one of the Darkthrone songs I listened to today was basically about the guys getting the boys together to rough up some bullies at high school, but it was either a phyrric victory or however you spell it or they got beat up themselves. They just used black metal words like "sword", "darkness", "blast", "crimson", "horizon", "baphomet", "ice", "frost". As much as I like Dissection's music, their lyric writing is directionless.
I gave the shit an honest listen, but most of it is juvenile, babby's first attempt at making music.
Maybe in the future I'll work backward on a band's discog and stop when they start getting puerile.
