I can't say I've had clinical depression - the long-term serotonin-tapping horror. But I've had clinical burnout. Took a job I guess I just wasn't prepared for and it destroyed my life and myself. I contemplated suicide every day. I would be drunk alone at home at 2am and I'd lean over the railing of my 8th floor balcony hoping the glass or railing would break and I'd fall to my death.
I eventually quit the job, having not killed myself, and had to move thousands of miles back home to recouperate. It took me almost a year to get my head back in the game. It was the worst and most shameful, and secret, dark, period of my life.

I'm kind of surprised no one's mentioned Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. Not necessarily one of my favorite songs but I think it captures the feeling pretty well.
King Crimson's Starless is a great one too. It's interesting what they accomplish not only in the lyrics but in the music throughout the track to convey the vibe of depression.
