I've been trying to familiarize myself with more metal artists lately, specifically progressive metal, stoner metal, and power metal. There are songs that I like and dislike, but I can't really tell what qualities differ between them. Any help is appreciated, even if it is just some suggestions.

what
how
how do you listen to Rhapsody and then listen to Sleep, and not realize who differentiates the two? Like if you didn't know the different between black and death metal, as a newbie I'd get it, but like stoner doom and power are radically different.
The best way to understand is to listen to them. Listening to stoner and power are easily distinguishable. Prog doesn't have a specific sound per say, it's mostly in how the song is structured. A stoner or power band could be considered progressive.

Well this is all that really matters then isn't it? Genre labels are just supposed to aid us, the consumers, into finding similar sounding artists. Very rarely do you find a band that cleanly fits under one single label without elements of others creeping in, especially in metal with its massive plethora of subgenres. So don't stress about not being able to differentiate personally. Just listen to the stuff you're enjoying.
If you're enjoying Dopesmoker, then check out Lysol by Melvins.
how about you start from the beginnings of metal and then work your way up from there?

the first 30 years of metal, barring like 3 bands, is straight garbage.

If you think the first 30 years of metal is garbage then you're not only a failed excuse of a metalhead but also a huge faggot

nah
>specifically progressive metal, stoner metal, and power metal
Progressive metal is not a specific sound or style, just like how progressive rock isn't either. It just encompasses metal with progressive structures and experimental tendencies not associated with other metal.

Stoner metal is essentially fuzzier doom metal with an emphasis on groovy psychedelic rock riffs. In case you didn't already know, doom metal is just slower metal.

Power metal largely differs between it's there main scenes, the American power metal scene, the European power metal scene, and the Japanese power metal scene.
American power metal tends to be mid-paced, loud, wide vocal range, less choruses, and little to no keyboards. It has heavy emphasis on riffs. Tends to be a lot more macho than the other scenes.

European power metal is faster than American power metal, but is focused on catchier hooks and poppy, memorable stadium rock choruses that you're meant to sing along to. It's almost always sung with high pitched operatic vocals. It has very little focus on actual riffing, putting a higher emphasis on lead guitarwork, soloing, and keyboards. Lyrical themes tend to be based around fantasy or science fiction.

Japanese power metal is the most fast-paced of the power metal scenes, and is largely focused on technical prowess in the form of neo-classical noodling. It has heavy emphasis on keyboards and lead guitar focus, but unlike European power metal, it has less focus on catchy hooks or poppy choruses. Vocals are very operatic and lyrics tend to be about Western romanticism or anime/manga.
