Dogwander and Mortimer have completed huge listening milestones (Dogwander for instance has officially listened to all of Jandek's discography and the Merzbox)

The cassettes for Arrayed that Triangle and I have funded have been ordered and should be arriving in a few months

Band of Susans - Love Agenda (1989)
>noise rock

Some really nice noisy guitar work and songwriting here, but I can't get fully behind the more streamlined, straight up alt-rocky songs. There are still some really great songs here, the first two tracks are amazing, "Because of You" has a great driving rhythm, "Which Dream Came True" is ominous as hell, lotsa good stuff here. But the more streamlined, irritatingly poppy tracks drag the album down as a whole. Still good.

3.0-

Strawberry Switchblade - Strawberry Switchblade (1985)
>new wave, synthpop

Super duper dated, this thing is so obviously '80s it hurts, but it's actually nice for what it is. It's best moments are when it get super twee and cute, but it kinda suffers a bit when it starts to sound like every other synthpop band of the time, it's the tone of the synths, I swear. And the vocals, I guess, but those are really nice. Pretty solid record.

Progress continues with the megachart, just finished listening to Cupra and I must say that was a very comfy album, albeit a little front-heavy.

After I finish this chart what should I do? I've been thinking that I'll scale it back a little and maybe just do a 10-album chart, or maybe go through the discography of an artist.

>Still recovering from Van Gogh and Picasso, bastards blow my mind.
Van Gogh's compositions are often so challenging. I love the man's work. Picasso not so much but his influence was cool I guess.

srsly though tell me that album isn't literally a math rock album, only from Africa and without the pretentiousness.
>>
>>65772345
>Can't always say the same for music, strangely enough.
'cause paintings are higher quality when you see them in person, for music it's the opposite. Also museums are pretty quiet, whereas most live audiences for music are some combination of loud, drunk, and annoying (with the exception of classical shows).
Also: good pic.
>>
>>65772094

>>65772409
Yes, especially during the first track the time signature changes were incredibly apparent. Recently have been looking for more albums along this style and my favorites have been the Four Brothers and that molam album we were all listening to a while ago. I know it's not the same thing but the concentration on electric and trebled instruments seems to be the underlying factor.
>>
>>65772667
Thanks!
>>
>>65772726
>>65772409
It's especially great because I've fallen out of favor with math rock ever since my favorite math rock band almost entirely abandoned it's style in favor of a more indie rock approach. I felt they were one of the few that did the genre any justice so this came as a refreshing reminder of the genre's possibilities
>>
>>65772804
That monster of a molam album, yes
>>
>>65772650
>Where did you go to see the paintings?
The Barnes Museum. Tons of amazing stuff, but the layout is kind of weird because they modeled it after the house of the guy that owned all of the paintings. So there's a lot of stuff clustered together and sometimes there are paintings over doorways. Still a great collection though.

Here come Wednesday's reviews

>Seaside Lovers - Memories in Beach House
At the center of vaporwave's oft obsessed-over 80s commercial-cultural malaise would have to be this soulless husk of a commodity. It’s not such a stretch to imagine this thing being incepted in some fancy boardroom in a misguided attempt to curb Wall Street banker suicide rates, but I'm probably being way too harsh there.

It has everything though. Gated reverb and drum machines? Check. Repetitive synth melodies? Check. Smooth jazz sax solos? Check. Vague exotica influences and beach themes? Check. Neon color scheme? Check. Vapor sample town, population: Memories in Beach House.

But try as I might (and as you can see, I am certainly trying) to hate this album on principle alone, it can be pleasant at times, even catchy.

The pummeling polyrhythmic drumming in the opening of "Sunset Afternoon" is undeniably catchy, and the synthetic wave sounds washing over "Sun Bathing" reach that perfect amount of cheesiness, just enough to be funny, not enough to be unlistenable.

However, I have no patience for snooze fest tracks like "X's and O's", "Wind, Wave & Wineglass", "Coconut Islands", "Evening Shadows", or “Blue Memories”. Essentially, the latter 2/3 of the album is lame. The first few songs are actually decent, if only because they have some memorable feature in all the by-the-numbers city pop.
>5/10

>Shakti - Handful of Beauty
Very technically impressive hindustani classical-influenced jazz fusion with one of the most traditionally creepy covers I have ever seen. Like, it has to be intentional, right?

The music, as mentioned, is pretty impressive, with some insanely fast finger-picking (it actually sounds like it could be hybrid picking, but I can’t be too sure) and even faster drumming. Unfortunately this doesn’t amount of much other than some instrumental acrobatics, and the music itself is obviously a little cheesy.

>Mary Oliver - Witchfiddle
I was recommended this as a fan of Polly Bradfield. Supposedly this would be something like Solo Violin Improvisations but with a viola on some tracks, so I had to check it out. Needless to say, it’s wasn’t quite that, but still very interesting atonal improv stuff nonetheless. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the audio quality was just as good as on SVI, but the sound was a lot more varied, and nowhere near as consistently sparse or tortured. A few tracks I would even dare call… (gasp) tonal?

A, B, C are introductory, covering a range of playing styles with Viola and Violin
D, E, H are harsh. It is implied E is played with a “Harddangerfiddle” but I’m confident that’s a joke
F is plucked playing—I love this kind of thing
G is very shorter (56 seconds) and incorporates somewhat annoying human screeching
I is almost romantic in its composition, and pretty tonal compared to the rest of the album
J is theremin-esque for a bit, then swirling and almost psychedelic
K was fairly standard viola playing, a bit on the droney side

Would recommend for fans of solo improvisational stuff, mostly in a single instrument.
>7/10

>Orior - Strange Beauty
"Strange" might be a strong word and "Beauty" is a little too presumptuous. This is supposedly a “hidden gem” of post punk and dark ambient, found in some dude’s attic, and when being remastered and released everyone along the way seemed absolutely enamored. It probably could have stayed in the attic, because in my opinion, it’s honestly pretty boring.

I experience a similar phenomenon with Aphex Twin sometimes: is it too interesting to be ambient or too boring to be IDM? Same deal here, but replace ambient with ‘dark ambient’ and IDM with ‘post punk’ or ‘industrial’. Pick your poison.

Strange Beauty.jpg
2 MB, 1417x1417
A large portion of it is low-frequency and dark rumbling with very elongated synth swells floating by. It often evokes cavernous atmospheres, so the prismatic rock formation album art (admittedly a pretty great cover, that) is very apt. The standout track would have to be the slowly-building polyrhythmic “Earth Rhythm” which eventually builds into a solid post punk track with a killer groovy bass line. However, it’s over all too soon and never does anything with the build. It just keeps adding background elements until the song is suddenly over 4 minutes and 30 seconds in.
>4/10

>Grachan Moncur III - Some Other Stuff
A collection of a few different styles. First is dark and brooding, emulating a thunderstorm? Second, Thandiwa, is lighter, more standard post bop. Piano drum duo is heavenly.

Thandiwa and The Twins are pretty similar, but The Twins, true to its name, is based around duet-like hand-off playing between Wayner Shorter on tenor sax and Moncur on trombone. The Twins is a pretty simple-sounding piece, and according to AllMusic, it’s impressively built on only a single chord.

Nomadic is probably the most interesting piece here, based nearly entirely around a drum solo. And I mean solo. Like, complete silence and drumming. Nobody keeping the song going in the background while the drums get the spotlight. After the 1:12 mark in the song, it’s just drumming. Occasionally a few players will drop in for added atmosphere (off-beat piano stabs and quiet, thin, ghostly whistling from some inscrutable brass instrument) which really chills the track.

>cont.
>>
And the drumming itself is beautiful. Anthony Williams plays his role perfectly. It’s almost surreal how well it fits the title (a theme I’ve noticed across all Moncur’s pieces, which probably shows his skill as a writer and bandleader) as the drum rattles out sounds that could only be lost, wandering.

The rest of the band fully re-enters the piece just to repeat the theme at the end, as if to say the journey is over. Easily one of the coolest and most unique jazz pieces I’ve heard in quite some time.

>Rodan - Rusty

The opener is fucking excellent and one of the most immediately pleasing math rock songs I've ever heard but Shiner is trash and the rest just sound like they're trying to ride Tool's early success a little bit. Still. They do it decently enough.

>Teebs - Ardour
A twinkly sort of Wonky. The upper register dominates most of these tracks and gives it a pretty comfy feel to it. I hate to sue the word tropical cause Tropical House is trash but its got that kind a beachy kind of feel to it. Nothing crazy special but an enjoyable listen.

Thursday reviews inc. These are much shorter.

>Inhalants - Inhalants EP
All around cool outsider and industrial techno. The first track is fairly standard techno fare with a really cool overly-distorted synth line. It usually wobbles about in the background, but occasionally roars to life, sort of imitating a motorcycle engine revving up.

“No Hats” has a pretty cool ricocheting beat and hazy synth swells sweeping the track. The back half of the track sounds fully submerged in a bathtub, splashes of clear sound occasionally break the surface.

“There are Cops Around” is just as murky, but in a different way. It seems to be imitating submarine sounds quite successfully, but the whole track is much more subdued than the two prior.
>7/10

>Delroy Edwards - 4 Club Use Only EP
Pretty much the same, but more tech-house than straight techno. The title track is a perfectly example of trance-like house with a sturdy beat and light synth loops in the back. On top is some pretty wonky bleeps and bloops. The song shows minimal progress across its 8 and a half minute runtime, but it’s still pretty great stuff.

Bells is more cool tech house which relies on a syncopated bongo and hi-hate beat and of course the usual on-off house clap beat. It’s pretty minimal, but it works.

“Love Goes On & On” is probably the weakest track, built around a decent beat and lazy hazy synth loop. Even less progression than the title track, concluded with a weak fade out. The first two tracks really make this EP, and I’m really loving the Long Island Electrical Systems aesthetic.

>Alex G - Trick
Not particularly standoutish indie rock with a few glitch moments. The lyrics are probably at least worth some examination, but he has a tendency to repeat a lot of lines two to three times for whatever reason. The raspy vocals probably most set this apart from similar releases.

He has a weird obsession with animals, particularly dogs and occasionally whales.
>6/10

>Ed Motta - Perpetual Gateways
I feel like I should feel something listening to this, but I don't.

Smooth vocal jazz and soul, and I'm not a huge fan of the instrumentation or his voice. His singing is paradoxically identifiably soul, but it’s totally soulless. Needless to say, it's all very bland.

It seems like bad critical writing (and in bad taste) to take pot shots at the artist, but Ed Motta seems like the kind of guy to refer to himself as a gentleman and think very highly of himself.

I enjoyed both of these a lot, but it’s definitely dense stuff, so it’ll take some time to properly parse through these and write halfway decent reviews.

And would you look at that? Done already.

I would recommend any techno or tech-house fans check out the Long Island Electrical Systems label. They've been putting out singles and EPs at a ridiculous clip for the past few years, and it seems like it's good stuff so far.

I think topsters2 doesn't support more than 10 rows, so I may have to start another chart with the next round of reviews. I'll try to use better colors next time.

Last American Hero was meh. Just sort of lo-fi ambient made with rock instrumentation. Feels it could be the soundtrack to a wild west movie that takes place in a dystopian future where everyone lives in old outlet malls (I think something like this is mentioned in the liner notes). Probably will get a relisten or two and might grow on me.

On Air had more of the qualities that I liked about Night Dolls, but was less structured (not that that's a bad thing). It sounded like he was shifting gears from the ambient style on Last American Hero and was transitioning into his poppy fuzzed out radio style. I think this will get some replay.

I can see why the term hypnogogic is used to describe these albums, they definitely remind me of the semi-structured nonsense thoughts that I have while falling asleep.

That's actually a pretty good way of describing it. On the genre as a whole though, at worst it's lazy or pointless, and at best it's mesmerizing.

Do they only perform albums?
That's kind of odd. But pink is nice so no biggie. Would love to see them play Amplifier Worship
