folk involves more storytelling, a philosophical approach to everyday life, love, and politics.

country involves the woes on knocking up your sister

What people think of when they hear "Country" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6l3ukWqRU4s

Vs. what I think of when I hear Country: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tw8B7oyi_Sk
>>
>>65647303
God I really hope the Jason Aldean is good thing is a meme because Jesus Christ.

>>65647239
Not a whole lot. Its all semantics really. Folk music song structure is generally more free flowing, lyrically folk has a wider range of topics, but outside of thematic elements they're nearly identical.

both of these are literally unlistenable. Holy fuck how are these ever watched unironically
>>
Country is definitely more pop. It doesn't feel unnatural to dance to country music. Or drink to.

For folk music you can stretch it to include everything from nick drake to joanna newsom and Leadbelly to the Pogues but as a whole i feel like it's more cerebral. The kind of show you sit down at.
>>
>>65647554
M'kay I can see why you didn't like the last one. A bit cheesy, but endearing and personal, unlike the first one. Still probably not the best comparison. How's this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBvTbdQGoV0
>>
>>65647642
You are picking songs that are no better than Aldean or Luke Bryan. Stop.

Try this:

>>65647624
This, subject matter in country is usually fluff and the music is chorus oriented
>>
>>65647554
I'm from NC, if you only listen to music via radio these are your options:

Top 40 pop
Rap
Country
Dadrock
NPR

When your options are all terrible (npr classical is passable) and college radio doesn't exist anymore it's a matter of what aesthetic you prefer to identify with. Bad Country is above NPR's nu-journalism think pieces in this regard although both are under AM static.

Not bad. I've heard about Jason Isbell for the longest time, but was torn about whether I should just pick up an album of his for the heck of it. I guess I should. You never know until you try.

I only just started listening to /mu 3 years ago, picking up easy-to-listen-to albums and artists, i.e. Dierks and Keith. I'm starting to branch out a lot more, though. Experiment a little. Which reminds me: What're your thoughts on Allisson Krauss? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XB-bkp8t69A&list=PLmqlOGJa7NCatzY3zYcJlk4lo33Jyxo_9

Btw please post more, if you can. Like I said, I'm trying to branch out, and so far I'm liking what suggestions I'm getting.

I have no hatred of Allison Krauss. I wouldn't regularly listen to her but if I was sitting at a BBQ place or some shit and one of her songs came on I wouldn't bitch.

Oh yeah. I heard it earlier today. God I love her music. Chick has some fucking pipes.

Just listened to "Look At Me Fly." Love the sound. Keeping track of the artist and finding out more..I've had Turnpike Troubadours on my recommended list for the longest time, not knowing what they were about, but I didn't expect what I got when listening to "Before The Devil Knows We're Dead". Heavily considering getting an album of their's now.

And wow I didn't actually expect this much feedback. I'm literally trying to add these artists to my Amazon wishlist as I speak. I swear if this thread gets pruned by the time I post this...

Keep 'em coming.

I think the biggest difference is that country has much more freeflowing sounds and usually is less overtly political.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCulA_yb79M
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpzvZ1b69fQ

You could argue that these songs are not country, but its inarguable that they are folk. They absolutely aren't.

Oh don't worry. I've been visiting the site on and off for months now. Busy work schedule's been keeping me from going as often as I wanted to, but yes, I am definitely aware of Saving Country Music. I soak in basically everything Trigger has to say in his articles. Honestly never seen an article-writer like him.

Same here, man. I guess you can't really blame people for hating it when you consider the larger stars today are twisting and distorting the image country music used to bear. I'm not that old (19), so I can't even imagine what it must feel like for an older guy/gal to see what "country music" is becoming today.

With that said, there are a few, lesser known diamonds in the rough. And boy do they shine. There's even a couple songs among the more popular stars that I absolutely love that will never penetrate the ears of radio-exclusive listeners. For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3O55nG2oNM

>>
>>65648450
Honestly they cover stuff I don't care for so much.

They only make passing mention of gothic country and seem to ignore the denver scene completely.
>>
>>65648737
Yeah, I guess I never noticed because I don't know much about the Denver scene (Denver is not the first place I think about when I think about country music). Trigger lives in Texas and covers the Red Dirt/Texas Country scene.

What are some good Denver bands/artists?
>>
>>65648810
I'm from Texas too. I dunno, I don't mind red dirt country but much prefer spookier country.

My favorites are 16 Horsepower/Wovenhand, Jay Munly, The Denver Gentlemen, and Slim Cessna's auto club.

its a pretty tightly knit group of people.

>>65648737
Denver is a very niche scene. It's kind of understandable that it doesn't get that much mention. Denver's gothic country and Texas/Oklahoma's Red Dirt have a commonality in that neither are very well known outside their local regions.
>>
>>65648894
Thanks for the suggestions bud. I will look more into this.

>>65648910
Hell, you would be surprised how well known some Texas/Red Dirt artists are in the Iowa/Illinois area, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Turnpike Troubadours being the some of the best known.
>>
>>65647239
Not much, folk is almost an umbrella term for "music of the people." Country is that but about southern life, the apocalypse, failure, defeat, love, leisure times, the supernatural and the occult, and death. At least it used to, now people only sing about trucks and, "the boys."
