basically a continuation of Fine 2
>Casiopea & Jimsaku
One CD of casiopea tunes, mostly from the 80s, another CD of Akira Jimbo and Tetsuo sakurai's band, Jimsaku
And now this,Flowers.
I'd say it's actually the best they have been in the 90s. this album oddly enough does not really feel like a whole but more like a collection of small moments, as if the entire thing was composed with an idea of momentum that privileged having short movements within the tracks to great a constant dynamic of rise and fall rather than overall movements. This is not necessrly a bad idea and is a fairly interesting take on composition. However when combined with the variety the album tries to show in terms of tone, of textures for all instruments,it does make the entire thing lack unity.
Still,an interesting listen. Secret Message is definitely a highlight.
40 down, 23 to go.

Corea - Los peores 7 km de mi vida (2004)
>screamo
Well done screamo is pretty much some of my favorite music (Orchid, Jeromes Dream, the list goes on...), and if this isn't well-done, I don't know what the hell is. What's kinda funny about this album is that the screaming isn't pushed to the forefront and isn't made the emotional backbone of the music, instead the instrumentals generally make up the brunt of the emotion here. And man, are they ever wonderful. The balance between heaviness and airer, yet still kinda ominous and dirty post-rock is pulled of so well, and they even manage to fit some noise in there without it seeming out of place. I do wish that the vocals were more prominent though, because the moments where the screaming is most apparent and prominent are some of the most emotional moments here. Still a wonderful album nonetheless.

"" Best to worst
>Flipper - Album: Generic Flipper
HOOOOOOO BOY. This was rad as fuck. I couldn't ask for more surprises on an album. Noisey and brutal, repetative, and doesn't give a heck about predictible structure. Last song features sax, because of course it does.
9
>Pelt - Ayahuasca
OH BOY TWO HOURS OF DRONE AND FREE FOLK...and it's not terrible??? Honestly though, though there were a few less-than exciting moments, the variation in instruments, the primitivist influence, and the heavy atmosphere, this is one of the best drone albums I've ever heard.
8
>Various Artists - Super Eurobeat Presents Initial D - D Selection
Was REALLY not expecting to like this. Though a few tracks were annoying like Running in the 90's (you've all heard this, even if you don't think you have) but this is probably the most hype collection of music ever. You can drink, club, fuck, and drift your vehicles to this shit.
7
>清水靖晃 - 案山子
Some DAMN good sax on this shit. Has a warm comforting feeling throughout with only a few tracks (mainly 3 and 5) being notably worse. Otherwise, this was fantastic.
7
>Gilles de Rais - Vampire 吸血鬼 / 幽閉
Pale Cocoon side project with more industrial influence. I don't know if the recording quality was THAT poor or the only copies I could find were terrible recording quality (especially the b side) but this was alright I guess.
6
>はっぴいえんど - 風街ろまん
If you're a weeb who likes The Band/CS+N/Neil Young this is your thing. Unfortunately I am only the former.
5
>Pinkshinyultrablast - Everything Else Matters
I liked a lot on first listen, but it got boring really fast?? Like it should practically be a match made in heaven: noise + dream pop and a warm atmosphere, but the post-rock approach to this kills it pretty hard for me. Wish it chose melody over atmosphere sometimes, but if you're a big shoegaze guy, you shouldn't pass this up.
5
>>65605010
>Elliott Smith - Heaven Adores You
Not many "expansions" on previous songs (other than Christian Brothers, which is a great version), more stripped back and previous works, none of which are really that great other than "True Love" or "Plainclothes Man". Most of the picking just feels like he just forgot to add lyrics, they don't really hold substance on their own.
4
>New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies
Joy Division minus sincerity and plus a "dancy" fell with a larger synth presence. Not for me.
4
>Ramones - s/t
This broke my heart. I still remember being in middle school/early high school and in my "punk" phase. Loved this back then, but honestly I feel like it was because of who it influenced and not really what it was. Shit, I even had a rad Ramones jacket with the Eagle and everything, shit was tight. And I don't hate Blitzkrieg Bop because I've already heard it a million times, I do because punk's first album is pretty much reminds of the main guy in Green Day's son's band. A lot of attitude for 1976, and I enjoyed how it doesn't take itself too seriously, but goddamn I just can't love this like I used to.

Listening to the Gnip Gnop EP by Animal Collective. Wish they had included these two tracks into the album
>not pictured : Super Best
A big 2cd compiliation. about two hours of Casiopea, pulled mostly from their 80s output. it's okay for what it is.
>Lights and Shadows
Somehow picks up where Flowers left in its attempt to diversify the band's patterns, especially in the rythmic department. However the composition itself seems to fall back into their usual flow of almost linear intensity. Sure the interplay between the musicians does make things more interesting on some of the more daring structures here (see The Tease, a very nice funk track, the carefully produced Movin, the very energetic opener Golden Waves and the very soundtracky Riddle) but in many other spots the group here just indulges in their usual style with little brought to the table that has not already been heard.

Wasn't really my thing. Some of it was pleasant to listen to, but this type of music isn't exactly what I enjoy. The vocals were mostly annoying me. At least it was holding my attention. Can't really say I would listen to this again.
>Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
I don't like this very much. I had to turn it off at "Blue in Green" because it actually made me mad. Turned it on later on "All Blues" and it was much more enjoyable. What's the average score for all the Casiopea records you've heard so far? It doesn't seem like you enjoy them very much desu, so why keep listening? Is it worth it?
>>65608019
completely understandable
>>65608547
It must be somewhere arround 12/20 or 11/20.
And to be completely honest, Id say it might be worth it. Not because the music is always that good but because listening to that muc hstuff made by the same people does train your ear in a way. When you are so deep into a single artist's catalog you start to notice small things, learn how to pay attention to details, etc. I could have picked some more interesting group or composer but eh

even though Turkey is involved, the shitposting peak will clearly be this evening for Ukraine - Germany
Akira Jimbo and Noriaki Kumagai dance arround drumsets and percussions, passing them to each other as the album goes on, Minoru Murakiya going for some droning backi ng synths and precise production, a couple guest musicians to add in some colour, I'm not sure what more I could ask.
This was actually quite good. the two percussionists coupled with the attention to backing sounds make for an itneresting listen although the entire sound can get a little tiring past the 50 minutes mark. Still, the rythmic drive is probably the best the band has reached thus far, and the coupled melodic work by both keyboards, guitar and occasionally bass or flute is here to make sure the rythmic frame does not o to waste.

Real talk, can we get a spreadsheet going with the approximate average score for every listen along? Don't bother including everyone's names, because it isn't a competition or anything.
I just want to see: is it just my imagination, or does nearly every listen along album suck?
With the exception of last week, I think most listenalongs would average a 4 or 5.
>>65610978

Hard considering the number of ratings that are "yes, okay, no, bad" etc rather than numerical ones.

Alright, here are the reviews I never posted last night because I'm dumb. I think these could use some more revising, but nobody reads them anyway.
>Part Chimp - I Am Come
A mix of noise rock and post hardcore, with the occassional whiff of something metal. Unfortunately, this is a relatively played out genre mixture, but at least the band seems to be pretty self-aware, and they don't often take themselves too seriously here. Case in point, the closer basically belongs on Musical Abortions, with every instrument noise-walling to the best of its abilities, clipping like all get out until it all just stops abruptly at the end, leaving just one lame bass guitar noodling away. I legit had to stifle laughter, so my coworkers probably think I'm just crazy, giggling away at Excel spreadsheets.
I really appreciate the none too serious attitude of the band, but I wish I was a bigger fan of the music. It just seems pretty played out.
>6/10
>Bleak House - Terje Rypdal
Art pop, progressive rock, free jazz, jazz rock, the works. An odd combo for sure, it sounds like the typical “art pop” album except with a lot more jazz, whether that be straight, free, or on the rocks. I really don’t have a lot to say about this thing. It had some cool sounds, but it left so little impact, especially whenever there were vocals.
I’ll give it another listen soon, though. I feel like it could grow on me
>6/10
>>65611300
an 8/10 pigger and you didn't snap a pic for me??

>Achwghâ‚ Ney Wodei - Achwghâ‚ Ney Wodei
Very sparse and spastic synth punk, martial industrial, and zolo post punk (still not entirely sure what that is, but it's all been very Beefheart-esque so far). I'm very conflicted about this album, because while it's certainly weird and intriguing, I can't decide if I like any of the songs. there are a few songs I definitely hate, namely: the longest song, Malro, which consists of an chugging industrial slog, background musique concrète and what sounds like a woman being raped. I mean, she's moaning and screaming and crying and everything. Like, to what end?
The songs "Tartarin de Tarazz King" and "Mais où est donc passé ma chéchia" are actually pretty good though. The latter is really excellent, featuring a deep horn sound and bass guitar that kind of 'bounces around,'(?) reminiscent of Rhys Chatham's "Guitar Trio." Clattering cymbals, triangles, and other bells and whistles (literally) fill out the cacophonous sound as the horns blare.
Unfortunately, most other songs stick to sparse instrumentation and minimal, repetitious rhythms, over which the band just does whatever the fuck they want with whatever they can get their hands on. Most of these songs leave me feeling pretty nonplussed.
However, I am very willing to give this another shot later. I feel like it could grow on me.
>5/10
>IBM 7090 Computer - Music from Mathematics
>The First Half
A cute collection of ye olde bleeps and bloops made by programming ye olde IBM 7090 in 1962. It never uses more than two voices at a time--not that it could even manage more I imagine.
Most of the songs are obviously very simple, either nursery rhymes or vast simplifications of melodies from classical pieces. It's obviously more of a tech demo than any sort of artistic statement, but it's pleasant enough on the ears.
>cont.
>>65611634
Yes.
>>65611625
triggered
>The Second Half
Sharply contrasting the light and simple melodies of sides A and B, horrifying technical experiments--really pushing what the computer can deliver in 1962--inhabit the C and D side of the record. "Numerology" and "The Second Law" are two standout tracks here. I'm not exactly convinced "Noise Study" was made by the computer itself. It seems a lot more likely that it's just a recording of the physical hardware's low hum.
It's really cute and satisfying that after the horrorfest of tracks 10 through 17, the album ends with a monophonic cover of "Joy to the World."
Most of it is pretty disquieting stuff, and becomes very interesting by the second half, but I really don't see myself ever revisiting this. I bet you could sample the hell out of every song here, though.
>5/10
>Up Murphy Street - Up Murphy Street
I'm running out of ways to say "I really wasn't feeling this one guys" but I'll give it one more shot here.
The introductory sound collage bit is possible the most interesting thing that happens all record. After that, the rest is very lyrical and concept-album-y progressive rock, half in the 'progressive' sense and half in the 'proggy' sense. (Tell me if that doesn't make any sense.)
Oh, and for being such a lyrical album, I would really appreciate it if the lyrics weren't so drab and mundane, and the vocals not so borish and British. The singer here is so British, he shits the queen.
A few tracks reach some peak, some level of excitement, but most of the time I just don't feel anything.
>4/10
>>65611564
no kind of blue was probably the first jazz album ive ever fully listend to if you don't count things like hot rats by zappa (which i really like). most of the music i listen isn't very abrasive, but i do like stuff by iceage, the cure, the velvet underground, the jesus and mary chain, les rallizes denudes, faust, dälek ..
>Beefcake - Coincidentia Oppositorium
This thing is a somewhat lengthy collection of sonically connected (literally, the tracks usually blend into one another) but conceptually very disconnected late 90s/early 2000s IDM pastiches and ambient tracks. One thing I noticed that seemed pretty consistant throughout the album is utmost reliance on a very expressive beat. The beats in this album cover a huge range of pitches and tambres, thumping, squeeking, squealing, and slapping all over the place. It reminds me of something like RDJ's more aggressive work or Flying Lotus' Los Angeles, but way crunchier. The one constant to the beat is definitely that crunchy, gated reverb sound, and as soon as gated reverb enters the picture, it’s too late: you might as well be examining the age of the music with carbon dating. That doesn’t stop it from being enjoyable though.
The ambient and musique concrète tracks, though, are kind of interesting. They sound remarkably vaporwave. Like, a lot more advanced and intricate than any vaporwave I’ve ever heard, but they do sound like slowed down mall music, and sometimes feature alluring voices that belong to the realm of resort commercial voiceovers. Looks like Beefcake was ahead of the curve here.
While I didn’t like this at first listen, it grew on me by the second. The beats hit hard, even if they sound very dated, and Beefcake produces some very interesting sounds within that beat pretense. The vaporwave-y ambient tracks in here are also cool, and sort of fit in with that dated image? Not sure.

>Various Artists - Bali: Musique pour le Gong Gédé
Fantastic, often lengthy excursions of trance-inducing Balinese gamelan music. The recording quality is really superb, and the playing of both 'Musiciens du temple de Batur' and ‘“ ” Tampaksiring' is near perfect.
Leading off is possibly the high-point of the album, "Tabuh Loma-Loma", a transcendental 22 minutes of some of the most captivating gamelan music I have ever heard. The recording showcases a very energetic performance which carries over into the next track, Tabuh Telu. Tabuh Telu is very much just a continuation of the previous piece, presenting a more repetitive variation of the theme established in Loma-Loma. Tabuh Pisan further deviates, but maintains a similar sound. All the tracks can be qualified by a distinctive methodical clamor that rings out, serving as a set beat for the pieces, giving them a distinctive marching feel.
The Tampaksiring pieces, Tabuh Enem, Tabuh Pisan, and Galan Kangin, by comparison, lack this distinctive metronomic clanging and allows for more free-flowing and meditative music. I particularly enjoy the rapid fire richochet effect on Tabuh Pisan, but the closer is where this free-flowing style of playing really shines.
Galan Kangin is a very beautiful, gentle piece, lacking all the energy of the album opener. It's simplicity is stunning, and it carries a sad but hopeful tone.
At least check out the perfect album opener and closer, but everything else in between is very worth your time if you ever want to get into Balinese gamelan music.

You might dig the inner mounting flame by Mahavishnu Orchestra or spectrum by Billy Cobham. They're p guitar centered jazz fusion records. I don't have much experience with the fusion genre but electric Miles era might be worth looking into. He starts it more or less with Miles in the sky/filles de Killimanjaro but I'd say the actual fusion stuff begins with in a silent way. Nonetheless is a slow and atmospheric record, so you might wanna try bitches brew or on the corner instead. A lot of his 70s stuff is pretty dense, especially the later it gets. Sun Ra's fusion stuff is also pretty well liked among people who don't necessarily like jazz. Try Lanquidity or Sleeping Beauty if it interests you.
And since kind of blue is more or less your first, I'd also recommend listening to a love supreme by John Coltrane and the black saint and the sinner lady by Charles Mingus. They're also highly regarded records of very important and influential jazz artists.

>>65612315
Yeah, they shouldn't I guess. Even though the sub label gives you an idea of what you're venturing into, it makes jazz very hard to define as a whole, Ellington and Brötzmann speak very different languages. I suppose that if you take an era, what came before and after isn't too different, so it makes sense to call it all jazz, but in the long run it's a fuss. I think it's too late now for people to start using different terms also.
