Christ this is awful

What makes you think it's awful?
leave
i thought so too, once

I remember my first day on /mu/

It's not good when I listen to it
It is musically bad
So what shitty /mu/core artist do you think is gonna have cancer strike their family next?
>>65539107
and what exactly in your opinion makes it musically bad

your favorite album is worse

It is now when you are no longer a teenager
This thread is so fucking epic.
>>65539066
This album sounds like if American Football tried to be Granddaddy
Guys the album is bad okay
If the title track is supposed to be the best song you're really in trouble

>>65540466
It's bad because it's not very good
>>65539066
2/10 b8
>>65539066
Not a favorite of mine either but not awful.
This thread is awful for not giving proper criticism.
phil is possibly the greatest guitarist of our generation but you are all too dense and short sighted to understand that
>>65541402
But Phil's music isn't good because of technical skill. There are different reasons it's good. He's not even a particularly great guitarist
Can someone give a legitimate explanation of this album.
To me it sounds exactly like someone improvised a whole record on the spot. It sounds very loose, without much structure/melody.
>>65541695
It seems pretty premeditated to me, but Phil's "process" or style of writing is pretty much to have a sort of idea, then write it as he records it
It's a lo-fi cult classic
>>65541695
if you think think album has no melody or structure, you haven't listened to much folk at all.
it's nearly folk pop ffs.
>>65541810
Ah ok
>>65541888
I have literally zero folk experience as I'm Russian. But I've heard ITAOTS and other folk recommended by p4k like Nick Drake and so on.
Still it sounds like a free-form kind of record, a little like Laughing Stock. But on the latter, I at least had some idea what was going on.
>>65542165
did you even get to the second part of it? much better imo.
>>65542165
skip to Samurai Sword and listen with headphones.
if you don't like it then the Microphones just aren't 4 u.
I think this is the best thread in the history of /mu/
>>65539158
>>65542203
>>65542205
OK maybe I should give it a second try. Are the lyrics important in it? I can't understand shit about this record
You have to be cold when listening to it, OP.
>>65542237
headphones are important. phil is very talented at sound manipulation. i don't even care about lyrics.

>>65542343
Yeah, I finally remember what confused the hell out of me in this record. It's that feeling that it's a recording of a studio, an environment around the artist rather than the artist himself. The distrtion of the drums, the hum of the equipment, the finger slides on the guitar, the pauses and so on.
I don't understand what all of it means. Now that I'm listening to it—it's actually folk pop, but layered under a whole bunch of other stuff.
>>65539066
like i fucking care
>>65542451
i forget what exactly it was, but the hum at the end of I Am Bored happens throughout the course of the album. most of the noise is intentional sound manipulation, but i believe that buzz was from somewhere outside.
the atmosphere on the album is unmatched.
>>65542689
Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
I simply don't understand what the artist meant by it. Isn't folk supposed to be about artist's feelings alone? OK, I get this "bare bones" style of recording, reminds me of Springsteen's Nebraska.
But then there's that weird hum/noise like on Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or Kid A. It's atmospheric I agree, but to me it's also unexplainable and weird as fuck. The distorted drums… What does it all mean in the context of the album? I just don't get it.
>>65542820
You sound far too analytical.
why did he marry an old lady with no hair
>>65542820
this album isn't fucking folk look at Dont Wake me Up
Phil writes music and it happens to be acoustic sometimes. but his music is all about building an atmosphere, a natural force, whether thats a gentle breeze of acoustic instruments and ambient sounds and noises or a gale force bluster of distortion and fuzz.
he isnt trying to sing about his feelings over a couple chords, he is making a single piece of music that feels rather than means
>>65541402
>>65541691
He's straight up not a good guitarist but he's a great artist
>>65542855
But don't you think the distorted drums just clash with folk heavily? They sound like sound collage, but can't get the meaning behind it.
Yep, it's ok on its own, but when stuff like this obviously muffles other instruments, it's getting weird.
>>65542820
also "not getting it" because it's "weird" is the poorest excuse for saying an album is awful you fucking pleb
>>65541402
Phil is a mediocre guitarist and an incredibly naturally talented producer
>>65542953
you said you listened to NMH, Holland 1945 and Song Against Sex have harsher distortion on every instrument than almost any song on The Glow Pt 2.
>>65542994
>but m-muh production values
>>65542958
Look, I'm not that arrogant to say everything I don't understand is bad. I simply don't have the "key" to understanding this record. I wrote in this thread hoping someone would explain the concept of the album to me
>>65542994
But it's more like effect. It doesn't drown out the artist's voice or the guitars at all.
Take https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59sdwW9FB3c . At 0:49 starts a weird detuned radio sound with distorted drums, and the song ends with a complete silence with some hum. ITAOTS doesn't have "sound collage" moments like this
>>65543162
he's using the noise as another instrument. sound manip 101.
>>65543162
oh ok sorry for snapping at you i thought you were OP man
>>65543224
Yeah but once again: can anybody tell me what it means, if anything at all? The modern alienation and detachment like on Kid A? I just fail to grasp it although I believe others when they say it's good. I can hear there's some good folk music beneath it all, but I fail to understand how it's tied to the sound manipulation
>>65543345
The point of art is to find your own "meaning." It's music, he was going for a certain aesthetic and he's a talented enough producer to turn static into an instrument.
Listen to the album Mount Eerie if you want to know what he was aiming for with the noisier stuff.
>>65543345
JUST LISTEN TO THE MUSIC AND DECIDE IF YOU LIKE IT OR NOT WHO CARES ABOUT DEEPER MEANINGS
>"What did he mean by this?" the thread
>>65543345
it's mostly about a saturated feeling of being overwhelmed by the cities ( and perhaps social life ) and wanting to become one with nature
>>65543462
The point is, it's not "deeper" meaning. It's the most basic meaning. I'm not trying to decipher satanic messages playing the record backwards, I'm simply confused by the sound of the record itself.
>>65543452
OK, will try Mount Eerie
>>65543597
the titular song on Mount Eerie is the best thing he's done.
>>65543888
the trips have spoken
OK you've made me listen to it. It better be good
>>65539066
what kind of music is it anyway
i keep seeing it and thought i should try it but if it's that bad maybe i'll pass
>>65543993
lo-fi folk rock
I gave this a listen. Twice. I can't into it at all. The male voice at the beginning I cannot stand, I'm not into that brand of folk music and the distortion effect doesn't add anything.
I think I gave it an honest shot and maybe after like 10 times I would get something out of it but I don't think I can put myself through too much more.
>>65543993
Maybe you should listen and find out for yourself.
>>65543993
OP's either being contrarian or trying to bait hard. It's indie-folk, and it's definitely worth a listen.

>>65539321
My favorite song off the album is The Moon
>basic guitar idea
>multilayered guitars playing little variations on the idea make for a very comfortable "surrounded by guitars" sort of feeling
>quickly changes into a sort of abrasive/fast paced song with lyrics about the sadness of a lost relationship and regret about trying to make it work again
>trumpet arrangements add emotion during the chorus
It's sort of introspective music to listen to while driving at night, not something I'd put on with my friends.
>>65544135
hm, you're right, that wasn't as bad as "lo-fi folk rock" makes it sound
>>65544091
>because he manipulates sound
I understood it more as a preoccupation with what he was able to capture with his microphones, or in the recording process, and any release as a product of that
he talked about it in an interview at some point iirc
