I don't feel /mu/ is very wide in terms of what genres they accept though. It's wider than other sites, that's for sure I won't argue that, but it clearly is centered around rap/indie/electronic/post rock stuff. and before somebody flips on indie being used as a genre, whenever somebody says something is indie - (anything) you usually have a pretty clear idea of what that person is saying, that's the point I'm making. For example I don't think I've ever had a good discussion on soul music on here, something I'd love to get to know more of, I've tried many a times. I post 3x3's and other charts, asking for recs, considering I've turned to only last.fm for the past like 6 years for all of my music, and rarely get recs, and if I do it's mostly stuff I've heard already.
I don't have a better taste than /mu/, I think I've finally just realized this isn't the place for me to talk about what I like.

It isnt just /mu/, most music discussion places on the internet are for the most part just rehashing talks about the same artists, bands, genres etc. I'm guessing there's specialzied forums out there for things like soul, disco, industrial, noise, j-pop et cetera but who knows how much traffic they get, I assume they're probably mostly dead.

i was trying to add an artist to the database, and in the process of doing so i encountered this jshopa guy who was real fucking annoying (this was my first time adding something to the database and i had no idea he was a site admin). he was commenting suggestions on corrections of the smalllest little things in the most smug fucking way, i disliked him from square one. after a while, and after like 10 updates of the fucking artist bio i commented something like "jeez lousie this is harder than i'd ever expected it to be, i just wanna add the artist to the bloody site already". this jshopa guy then called me "belligerent" and said that if i wasn't gonna cooperate there was no need in trying to submit anything at all. idk what in response but it was something like "ok budster i'm on it. can't see why it's relevant but you're the boss". at this point i had figured out he was an admin but i was a bit sarcastic cuz he had been a dick all along. i changed the "search hint" for the artist to "gamelan guy on this release that's not on rym already", and since this fuck can't take a joke he suspended my account for a week.

I've spent the last 7 years of my life educating myself, watching as many films as possible, listening to as many records of all kinds of genres as possible and reading (with a focus on philosophy and the western canon) as much as possibly and yet I still feel like I barely know anything and am not competent enough/don't have enough knowledge to be an active participant of any discussion, because there's so much left to learn.

The main problem of RYM is the slow and cheap approach to everything, from site updates to artwork approvals. Building a legion of smug, autistic moderators don't really help if you want to get a bigger audience like sharifi does.
Sharifi is like Robert Rodriguez in a way, applying the diy approach to everything doesn't work efficiently in the long term.
