what did i do to deserve this/10

intro was okay, set me up for something a little better than what this actually is

I wish I could understand the vocal
the drums are pretty shitty and weak
synths pretty generic

you have some pretty decent musical ideas, kinda flopped on the execution though

keep going, you'll get better

Word thanks for listening. The mix is shit I know. Should have warned about that. I plan on personalizing the drums and adding some automation here and there on all of the tracks to make it sound less generic. I made this almost a year ago and my knowledge of and experience with ableton has doubled at least. Glad you hear some potential in it. I'll prolly end up scrapping it tho and working on more noisy stuff

Something I'm making. I think the intro is pretty chill, but everything else falls weak. Also need to put some bass there. Anyone knows cool bass scales?
>>
>>65504416
I like it, it's pretty A E S T H E T I C

If there's any part in your track that you consider a "drop", you should remove the kick and bass for about two bars just before it.
That way, when it "drops", you've got more "bam" factor in the track.

If that's not what you're going for, you can try adding long verby pads.

As for bass, it's probably easier to just follow your chord progression.

How liberally do you guys use parallel compression outside of percussive/plucky instrumentation?

If the song has been used in Guitar Hero or Rock Band, search for [your required song title] + MOGG and you'll find it most likely - it'll be in a multi-track ogg file that'll open in Audacity.

Lots of others have been ripped from the original multi-track tape (a few Queen songs and a few Nirvana songs spring to mind) so, again, search for [your required song title] + stems or [your required song title] + multitrack and you might get lucky.

>>65508111
The sub on the kick could be quieter.
Those wobbly instruments could be toned down more in the mid-high.
The bit-crushed hats at the end hurt.
Needs compression on the master to bring everything up.
Brotip: nothing you ever make will be a waste of time, because it's a learning experience.

>>65510346
This is really great as it is.
Maybe a touch more highs above the 10kHz range.
I think the bass is a bit too loud. I'd say bring it down 1-5dB to taste.
Vocal shout at the beginning might be too much.
And finally, compress the master to bring everything up.

>>65511904
Sounds like a Vocaloid accompaniment track.
Add more velocity variety to the piano, and shave off a little anywhere from the 1-5kHz range.
Bass is a tad too much, and I believe you should make more space for the drums to cut through the piano/bass/whatever mash.
What drums are you using though? They're pretty well done.

>>65519065
Did not regret.
Trumpets would sound way better if they were super wide.

>>65519571
You should probably add distortion, short delay, then reverb to your voice. Or anything that'll glue it in together with the guitar/drums.
By itself, it doesn't fit in with the track at all lol

Sounds like you've been mixing with a limiter on your master. Turn it off, reset all your levels, and mix again from scratch.
You can make a backup so you don't lose anything.

You can add ominous verby drums to the intro, but that's just personal preference.

For recording vocals and acoustic instruments like piano and classical guitar, should i get a condenser microphone like the MXL 990 or a dynamic microphone like the Shure SM57?

Or should i get 2 different microphones for vocals and instruments? On the shureblog i read this about the difference between the SM57 and SM58:

The 57 and 58 microphones are actually based on the same cartridge design. The main difference is in the grille. The SM58 was designed for vocal applications, and therefore uses a ball grille with built in pop filter to eliminate plosives.

"The SM57 is designed as an instrument microphone, where a smaller grille size is more practical and plosives are less of a concern. Subsequently, the SM57 does not use a ball grille with pop filtering and instead features an integral resonator/grille assembly, where the grille is actually part of the cartridge."

I don't actually know what exactly the difference between dynamic and condenser is though

Nah you can turn it back on when its done, just make sure to block ableton from connecting to the internet, and make a new shortcut from the executable in the folder. The shortcut the installer made will trigger a "please activate" pop up (at least it did for me, maybe not for you)

>>
>>65522883
>I don't actually know what exactly the difference between dynamic and condenser is though

Physical difference is the manner in which they convert sound waves to electric signals - dynamic mics will have a membrane connected to a coil, which moves within a magnetic field when sound strikes it, generating a signal.

Condenser (olde-worlde word for "capacitor") mics use two extremely thin metallic plates with a dielectric material in between - this creates a capacitor whose capacitance changes when vibrations are applied to it - the capacitance changes cause an audio signal to be generated when a voltage has already been applied to the plates, thus condenser mics always require a power supply for the capsule and for the built-in pre-amplifier.

Since condenser mic capsules have less mass they have less inertia - this makes them more sensitive and ideal for quiet sources like whispered vocals and singers with large dynamic ranges but it also (since inertia also affects recoil time) allows them to capture higher frequencies, making them great for instruments with lots of higher-order harmonics, like pianos and acoustic stringed instruments like violins and guitars.

They're also great for brass but be careful - brass instruments are fuck-loud with real fast transients so use condenser mics with brass at a distance, or use dynamic mics which are more robust.

Dynamics are great for anything super-loud like drums and amplified guitars, also live vocals since they take more punishment and are less sensitive to other sounds close-by.

Anyone have any experience recording amps?

I only have an SM57 and MX990 microphone available to me and was considering wether I would need to go DI or those mic's would produce a good enough sound. This is a bass guitar I'm talking about. I'll probably end up doing both and see which one sounds better but if anyone has any input or suggestions please let me know.
>>
>>65520940
It's hard for me to do that with my voice, my voice cuts out when i go high so early dead(mayhem), necrophobic, and cleaner immortal vocals are what im limited to,b ut ill try

>>65522883
well I just got a pdmic78 which is a $10 alternative to the sm57 and I have to say that it's pretty damn good for a dynamic mic if you wanted one to have on hand or testm just note that it only comes with a mic-to-1/4 inch cable
>>
>>65523452
Does that mean if i want to record normal sung vocals i should use a Dynamic mic?
>>
>>65522883
>>65523570

and I forgot to say that this mic is only optimal for the instruments, maybe more piano in some cases, but acoustic guitar as well unless you want it to feel like a cabin jam room, in which case you will want the condenser mic
>>
>>65523697

I'd say if you want to record anything amplified or real loud like live drums, or vocals, then dynamic yeah.

If vocals or pianos or acoustic guitars, then condenser.

If you can only choose one mic, that is.
>>
>>65523536

Bass guitar is usually a combination of mic and DI, but you will get some phase issues so the balance needs to be right.

What's considered the industry standard for condenser microphones in the same way the SM57 is considered an industry standard for live vocals and recording amps?

Neumann U87, or U47 if you're into vintage sounds. AKG C414s are real common too.
>>
>>65523970
But would an sm57 suffice for recording a bass guitar amp?
>>
>>65524399

Some people use a 414 (AKG) for bass guitar (and for kick drums) but with a bit of distance to avoid damaging it, this will make the phase issue more prominent though - 57s get used for amped basses with the DI to help solidify the bottom end.

If you're using a DAW you can add some negative delay to the mic'ed bass (play maybe 10 - 15 milliseconds ahead) to bring it into line with the DI'ed bass, with old-school tape and a decent mixer sometimes flipping the polarity of the DI'ed bass will help - you'll get there.

You guys need to grab the "event horizon" plugin by stillwell audio. Its a fucking beast on drums. Also check out Dyno by them, its a great transient / enveloper. I would not steer you wrong.
>>
>>65512541
I use it a lot, idk how necessary it is though. Sometimes it's hard to tell.

Watching Pensado's Place though, there's actually a surprising number of engineers who only use parallel compression and don't use normal compression at all. It's an interesting idea to try I guess.
>>

What kind of music would you use this for?
>>
>>65527085
it really depends how you use it I think

>>
>>65527562
in my opinion- best on anything with acoustic drums, drum breaks, that sort of thing. but really.. any drums with some well defined transients that aren't uber compressed yet, that you want to sound aggressive as fuck, hit them with event horizon a bit. Its basically a clipper that has some grimey saturation.

Dyno on the other hand, great on snares and kicks, on the individual channels. Especially if its a bus where you are combining a few layers. It listens for the transients much like a compressor, but when triggered by sound passing the threshold, applies the envelope you drew. Ends up being sort of like a really surgical compressor.

Not a good one on the whole drum bus, because it needs to get triggered by discrete drum sounds, a kick and snare and other loud hits will trigger it just the same, and confuse it.
>>

I thought your clyp was cool as fuck. very nice bassline. nice piano chords and sound. brass stabs felt a bit weird though, either get some harmony going there, or make it into more of a melody. 1 note just feels a bit flat.

That would have been me. I didn't suggest that anyone should buy them, I pointed out their status as industry standard (in the same way 57s are industry standard dynamic mics) since that was the question that had been asked, followed by a comment that home users who would not necessarily want to put in the same investment would still get a good result from an AT-2020 or a Rode.

Just finished a new fugue, pretty much what I've been obsessed with recently. Endless fugues.

Production tips eh... Most of what I've been focusing on in the last 5 years has been the composition side, I dont feel like I've grown very much in the production area, in fact I've probably lost ground! I still dont have any decent mics or preamps, I've acquired some decent orchestral libraries, but I feel the real "good stuff" comes from recording real players and instruments. idk do pastiches of pieces you like, learn from the masters, compare your music to good mixes and see where its falling down. If you've been producing for at least 10 years and you feel like you're not progressing, its time to learn theory.

The engineering manual I'm reading keeps telling me I should be trying to resolve unstable faders for a balanced mix.
I don't understand how I'm supposed to achieve that when I have auto-pan controls assigned moving the signal left to right, causing more instability.

I don't know, it just feels sort of lazy. Like I'm not putting in the effort of sitting down on the piano and coming up with my own progression through trial and error.

What are voicings and inversions?
>>
>>65533228
an inversion is where you take the lowest note and put it up an octave / 12 semitones

Its still the same chord, but arranged differently. You can keep taking the bass note and flicking it up an octave, usually you can do this 3 times for each chord.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr2XBoanNJY
>>
>>65533228
not him but also voicings are the notes you use to choose/order of them in the chord you play. for example there are loads of different ways of playing a C7 chord (different extensions like 9th and 13th etc.) and where you choose to play those notes in relation to each other in a chord is what makes your 'voicing' of that chord.so 2 different voicings for C7 could be: C, G, Bb, Db, E, A or C, Bb, D, E, A

both are ways of playing C7 chords but the chords use different notes in different orders so will sound different.

Love the smooth bassline and the sax. You should do better EQ and compressing though, especially with the drums. Like the other anon said, boost the highs. Song structure wise, try having it build up to something. Either that or try making a really catchy chorus with the sax.

>>
>>65536209
What I meant by that was to properly mix each track with the master in mono so that the difference between speakers disappear.
Then, once you've mixed the levels of each track to taste, put the master back to stereo to hear it in its full spatial width.
Much of the time, if it sounds good mono, it'll sound great stereo. Not always though.

Why does Image Line do this?
>>
>>65538670

The phrase gets mentioned in "Mixing Secrets" but the meaning is clouded - what they're getting at is a signal with unruly peaks and dips in level, resulting in constant movement of the fader to compensate.

What they don't mean is deliberate movement of the fader as a creative choice.

Yea, Omnisphere crashes every single time i try to authorize it in my daw no matter what. East West wont appear when i scan for new vst's in fl studio and I created my steam folder in a different place than the default location for Trillian and it is all fucked up because of that it seems and i have no idea why the fuck that would mess it up so bad.

With trillian and omnisphere it takes an incredible amount of time to download them since theyre so huge and imma need to uninstall trillian and reinstall it and create a new steam folder so that will take a long time and i doubt it will work even after that and with a lot of these vst's such as east west they have almost no seeders so they take weeks to download and then dont even work.

And naw of course i read the comments on the torrents and pick ones that people arent having problems with and ill never download one that has everybody saying it doesnt work but with a lot of these vst's theres only like 1 torrent im ever able to find and still i wont even mess with it unless theres a significant amount of people saying it works fine

Is it possible to use a club mixer without UBS, let's say and old Pioneer DJM or the Reloop RMX 60, with Traktor? Like basically just have two channels from Traktor on 2 channels of the mixer.
If not, is it possible with a mixer that has a USB connection, like newer Pioneer models, the Reloop RMX-40 USB or the Behringer DJX 900USB? Basically just want to use it to crossfade between two/four channels on Traktor and use the effects of the mixer. Maybe use Ableton, too, as i have an Ableton Push.

>>
>>65543653

I think we had someone with Omnisphere troubles before in /prod/, maybe two weeks ago, was that yourself?

I did look into it at the time and there were people with the legit version having the same issue - it had something to do with the directory that Omnisphere installed its licence file into, this was with Windows systems and it had to do with file/folder permissions being incorrectly set by the installer, thus preventing someone logged in with a typical user account from making changes to the licence file when they tried to authorize the VST.

What you could try to begin with is to launch your DAW as Administrator and this *should* launch the VST's authorization app with the same privileges - that might be enough to allow you to make changes to the licence file.

>>
>>65544460
aye. i don't know if newer mixers can split incoming digital signals over usb or ethernet or w/e but even if they could shouldn't rely on that.

normally you send your decks out to mixers over separate channels. sumfin like the traktor audio 10 if you need all 4 decks.
>>
>>65544233

If you use a traditional DJ mixer you'll need an interface that feeds two of the mixer's stereo line inputs with audio.

With the Behringer mixer it has only a single stereo audio output via USB so you'd be in the same position there - you'd need something that can take multiple stereo outputs from Traktor and feed them to separate stereo channels on the mixer.

The NI certified Pioneer mixers have the multi-output interface built-in so they will allow you to do what you want, the RMX-40 seems to be a little bit different in that it has two USB interfaces so you could conceivably create an aggregate device from both that would have two distinct stereo outputs - you'd be faffing about with ASIO4All to do that and maybe it would work - try searching the Traktor forums for the Reloop device.

You'd have to split deck A and deck B so that each deck was only outputting through a single channel (they'd therefore be in mono) with both outputs of deck A on the left channel for example and deck B on the right.

You could also try what I suggested here >>65544631 using ASIO4All to create an aggregate device from your Behringer mixer and your computer's built-in audio interface - that would give you two stereo outputs:

if you've got the ability to send midi to the synth from your computer you could just loop a midi clip instead of prerecording.

if you want to remain flexible (and i'm not familiar with logic in a live context so i'll just go by how ableton live handles it) you could break the midi up into bar length clips, so if you want to jam out over a particular section you would have the choice.

only reason you'd want to do midi instead of audio loops is maintaining control over envelopes etc in a live situation. using midi however, might tie up your synth unless your synth that can be split into zones.

if you don't care about improvisation etc then just stick with a loop in logic. everyone will have to be very tight live since you're essentially playing along to a backing tracking in that scenario. seriously consider a daw that allows clip launching for the live stuff.
