What's your guy's favorite genre of classical music? I'm really enjoying String Quartets and I think it may be my favorite form I just love the timbre of the strings and how harmonically rich it can be, while still being on a relatively small scale.

Why is it that the vast majority of people I've met that say they like classical only namedrop minimalist artists like Julius Eastman or Steve Reich?

String Quartets are fun, you should check out this one by Debussy.

Thanks man, I'll check it out now.

How does one get better at merging 2 phrases that are clearly meant to be a single one without sacrificing their memes?

Like if you have phrase 1 and phrase 2 and they're both meant to be part of this thing you're composing but they're both kind of pointless by themselves, and even more pointless in succession, how do you reconcile them without:

1. Retarded cutaways

2. Making one of them dominate the other

3. Ham-handed counterpoint

4. Destroying them in the process

? ? ?

?

?
>>
>>65465953
What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Are these phrases suppose to compliment each other or are they going against each other? How long are the phrases? What exactly are you composing?

What does /classical/ think of Impressionism?

It's pretty good. I like it, even though I haven't dabbled much on it.

whenever i see a composer hasn't composed a string quartet i drop them immediately. am i alone?
>>
>>65465696
Those are modern artists that are used and mentioned in pop culture. They're also good for casual listening and not particularly difficult.
>>
>>65466760
My favorite genre, much more expressive than Romanticism imo.

I like them. The minimalists as a whole are very good. My favorites are John Adams, Steve Reich and Arvo Part.

Try Rodeo and then Appalachian Spring and then Clarinet Concerto. Other good American composers are George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, John Adams, Steve Reich and Richard Einhorn.

What kind of composition is the greatest test of a composer's skill? Fugue? String Quartet? Symphony? Something else? I'd like to know what you guys think.

Opera, which is why Bach and Beethoven are inferior to Mozart.

Fugue was seen as the high point of composition for many many years.

what is 21p?

Also Mozart is full of emotion, and Beethoven is far, far "edgier" than Mozart. by that logic Bartok would be the worst composer ever and thats just not the case.
