Friendly reminder: the kiddies who post in /gg/ threads have nearly ***zero*** experience concerning guitar. Playing, repair, new player recommendations, etc. The average age in these threads is around early 20s: green as shit grass.

If you have an actual question this is probably one of the most uninformed & least knowledgeable places you could ever expect a proper answer to come from.

Be weary of any advice given here as it's amateur & perfunctory at best.

the lo-fi ish ness of the meteore feels like a traditional gain circuit going over the reverb to make it dirty

the lofiishness of the reverberation machine really feels like something is fucked up on the inside of the pedal or something, I think its from asking the belton brick to do too much or someshit, really cool and different lo-fi-ish overdrivey thing

meteore: really pretty reverb that dresses up as mangled verb
DBA RM: fucked up verb

I had a RM1N, I chose to keep the DBA and sell the Rm1N. The RM1N was really cool but I felt for what I used both pedals for (verb that sounds ratty), the DBA sounded a bit better and was simpler to use. The RM1N could be more just exploring weird noises with whats coming out of the guitar as an afterthought .

I just got a bass amp that supposedly absolutely must have a 4 ohm load, I don't have a 4 ohm cab but i do have a 4 ohm 12' bass combo http://shop.smile-music.de/index.php/sale-bass-eq/eden-n11,-basscombo,-b-ware-detail

but its got a 12 inch speaker, I feel like 4 ohm 12 inch speakers are hard to come by so I think they might just have put an 8ohm, in which case I would not want to hook my new amp up to it or it could blow the power tubes or something

>slap
It's pure rhythm. You're basically doing part of the drummers work with slap or replacing him entirely in some cases. The notes are basically irrelevant, many slap lines stick to root and octave, and it works. I don't think slap on guitar works (on principle and because of the low string tension), but I'd be interested to hear it.

So been playing for a while. Average skill tier, good timing compared to most due to metronome work and an anal jazz guitar teacher. My left hand has been cramping in the fleshy part of the thumb and I have a bad left shoulder due to weightlifting. Would a strandberg help? I hear the neck is max comfy and I doubt I could get a decent guitar that weighs much less. Any opinions?
>>
Is it true that lead guitar is significantly harder than rhythm guitar? I started guitar a few weeks ago, just learning rhythm and chords, and it doesn't seem very challenging so far. Toughest part was waiting for the calluses to build up.

I'll never stop saying Abasi's overrated, but he's still a pretty impressive guitarist.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlVRmqB-IoQ

>>65436240
Try an Ibanez S/SA. Thin neck, thin body, weighs nothing at all and won't blow your budget like a strandberg.

>>65436280
People expect super flashy stuff from lead guitar, that's why people think it's harder. This for exemple, is more rhythm oriented, but it's completely nuts.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMPfYYE5CBE
>>
>>65436280
Depends on the genre. Some two-guitar pieces don't distinguish between "lead" and "rhythm" whereas others would have the lead take complicated solos.
Lead can be compared to a sprinter, playing for short, yet difficult, bursts.
Rhythm is more like an endurance runner, playing throughout the majority of the song but doing so at an easier pace.

Each pickup of the Mustang has a 3-way switch. It's set up like this: [ on (positive polarity) / off / on (negative polarity) ]

That means you can have the pickups engaged individually, in-phase with one another, or out of phase with one another.

Usually not your job, you're playing a rhythm instrument for the most part. If you want to play melodies all the time you simply picked the wrong instrument, pick up guitar or get a 6-string and become a "solid bassist".

Trolling is trolling. But trying to attack the trolls is stupid. It never works. If you post on /gg/, expect it and be prepared to ignore it. It's incredibly easy. If someone replies to you, you don't have to reply black. If you think a post might be bait, err on the side of caution and ignore the post. Nobody is going to get their feelings hurt if their post gets ignored, and if they really needed a question answered they'd probably ask it in a mature, understandable way.

You can't drive trolls out by attacking them. Even if you succeeded in aggravating them, which is doubtful, they'd only post more. The way to get rid of trolls is by making them bored. Please, offer no entertainment value to trolls. I realize this is hardly standard practice on /mu/, but /gg/ is special.

I assembled it myself, but no it's not an issue with the frets, it's the bridge, it just rattles a fuck ton and it sounds awful if it's not plugged into an amp.

Do you think just putting a new bridge and higher gauge strings might help? Like 11s or 12s? I normally play 10s right now on a 25.5 scale guitar.
>>
Is JustinGuitar any good?
>>
>>65438167
Just put on higher gauge strings. That's definitely the problem. If you want to use light strings you need to use a fixed bridge. But I'd recommend heavy strings anyway, they yield a much better sound on short scale guitars.

Haha, I don't think I'm quite there, but hell does that hit the nail on the head for me. I kind of want to shake some people and say "Wake up! You can't even hear your guitar!" Those amps just have no transparency at all. Not that they sound bad, but hell. They'd sound about the same with strat plugged into them as a banjo. Not only will you sound like your guitar heroes, you will ONLY sound like your guitar heroes.

in phase is regular guitar sounds, out of phase gives you a noticeable treble boost, kinda sounds a bit shrill in some cases. David Byrne used this quite a bit in the 70s and Adrian Belew got a similar sound on 80s King Crimson stuff, although that was usually from a stratocaster

>>65439183
I suppose they don't sound bad but yeah, they produce the most generic "tube" guitar tone I've ever heard. I'm not sure if the sound is even close to any actual artists, all the classic rock icons used much different sounding Fenders or plexi Marshalls, probably.

In-phase sounds like positions 2 and 4 on a 5-way selector on a Strat.

Out of phase sounds "quacky", low output, high treble, think of the sound of the guitar in Led Zep's Houses of the Holy song.

I feel like i'm completely missing something in regards to actually playing music. Can we talk about he g5n? Not versus analog/tubes or anything, but I think I might buy one, and I wanna talk about it. The effects and amps list is much smaller than other multifx, but I think it's pretty versatile. I know it seems weird to worry about versatility from any multifx, but there you have it. I got used to having a ton of effects and having to dig through for the good ones, while this unit tries to actually provide only good effects... It's hard to have confidence in multifx to deliver that.

Can anyone figure out what pedals these effects emulate? I've only figured out the centaur klon and Mad Professor Sweet Honey overdrive.

Ah you mean doing the 1 2 3 4, down one string 1 2 3 4, down 1 2 3 4, kind of workout?
Just a matter of practice since you're not used to it.
Just keep at it.
Dunno which ones you're doing but do:
1 2 3 4
and
1 3 4
and
1 2 4
Then alternate versions and so on.
I still do them daily as a warmup 10 years after, that or scales like Major/Minor, Harmonic minor, Blues...

Why not try it in a store? too far away?
>>
>>65439633
Try getting a looper. That way you can add a chord progression behind a cool riff you made, rather than having to make riffs that match a chord progression. Being able to be flexible with this stuff is much more natural creatively. It's not unusual at all to sound a bit boring when you're very strictly constrained into a backing track. That isn't to say that you can't get better at it, though. It might be better to start off with the easier method of using a looper though.

I think it takes serious talent, the kind people associate with the 10,000 hour rule, to be able to add great leads on top of a backing track. It's not the way amateurs create great songs.
>>
>>65439633
Well, if you know well your scales, it should just be a matter of maybe copying a lot of licks, and after a while it just develops into your style.
Everyone's style is someone else's badly copied (or "improved").

It's pretty new, nowhere local caries it. Maybe I can ask the local shop to bring one it, they do that sometimes, since they have 2 locations. Actually, I've already got an older zoom. The g5n just sounds so much better to me than the g5, or the g3x which I own. I like the POD too, but listening to both I couldn't make up my mind which was better. The POD clearly has some better features, notably the fx loop, but I like the interface of the zoom. So, in the end I noticed the zoom is a bit cheaper. I think they are really close competition though.

By the way, do you own the POD? I might have some questions if so. More about the advanced features I can't figure out from the manual.

Well, what the fuck. It turns out the g5n's pedal only controls the effects associated with it. It can't be used as a "z pedal" like the previous versions, where you could control any parameter on any effect or amp with it. With the g5 you could even control 4 parameters at once. This one doesn't do shit. I guess this was somehow a cost cutting measure to allow for the higher quality amp sims, but I'm pretty disappointed. I use the pedal on my g3x to easily control effect parameters in a smooth way as opposed to the clumsy use of the hardware controls. Super useful for crazy delay effects in the shoegaze realm. But this new pedal can't do any of that! I guess I'll hold off on this unless there's a firmware update that brings back this feature. Combine that with the lack of parameters on some of the effects and this pedal is a lot weaker. For someone that only wants to do normal stuff it's probably fine, but personally I'd like to actually take advantage of the fact that it's a modeler.

Thanks for the input regardless. I have no hands-on experience with either so you're a great help. I did find out that while the zoom g5n expression can't be used in the same way as the previous versions, the POD does offer the ability to assign a pedal to any parameter... If you get a separate pedal. I'm not 100% on that but it seems the onboard one is only assignable to typical expression usage, same as the zoom g5n. This is pretty frustrating. I don't need two expression pedals, I just want to be able to sweep through delays and modulations. It seems like the only way is to save up for a helix. Honestly I can't justify such an awesome unit for the price though. I'm just a hobbyist. I think it's better if I just wait for a better unit to be released by someone.
>>
>>65440707

>>
>>65442278
What about BOSS? I saw Luc Lemay (Gorguts) last time using either a GT-100 or ME-80 or one of their previous versions. He used it as a preamp and pedalboard, the result was pretty good. But I'm also unsure if the pedal can be assigned freely with those (I did saw him use it, but I'm not sure for what).
>>
>>65442140
Depends, breh. I really like digital for reverb, delays, chorus, most modulation really. They are able to be run much cleaner, and give you way better control of EQ. It sucks to turn on an analog pedal and need to tool with EQ all over again. Plus, it gives you a hi-fi tone you can always degrade, instead of being stuck with a lo-gi tone.

But for distortion and fuzz, there's a ton of pedals that haven't been beat by digital yet. Honestly, you have to go by a case by case basis. There's really no comparing analog to digital outright. There's super hi-fi analog pedals with as many parameters as a digital pedal as well.

>>
>>65442426
I really like the boss ones, I think they're the best on the market for use as a pedalboard strictly, but the amp sims are weak. I want a really good set of amps, though I don't think I need more than 4 or 5 to be happy. Well, actually I don't need anything but a guitar with 6 strings and a practice amp to be happy, but to be happy with such a purpose I think it'd be fun to have some quality amps. The pedals on the boss unit are incredible, though. They sound JUST like the real thing, particularly the drives and fuzzes. I don't know if you can do cool stuff with the expression, I'll have to check it out. If you can, I guess the best solution for me, though cumbersome and even slower to dial in, would be boss into zoom. Kinda ridiculous but it'd still be cheaper than a helix. Plus, I think the older boss units at least for the pedals still offer the same quality, I think the newer one just "improved" the amp sims and such. If I can get a boss one cheap used it could work out.

When I learn more about the boss I'll let you guus know what I find. I'm sick and bedridden today, so I go nothing better to do. Yesterday I tried soldering, but it made my sore throat worse so I guess it's just ukulele and 4chan for me.

Neat, this looks pretty good. I'm reading the manual now. I tgink the pedal is configurable how I want it, not sure yet. This going into g5n or POD could be the cheapest option to helix-tier tone... These seem to go pretty cheap. I dunno how much you can rearrange the pedal order or stack distortions, I'll have to keep reading. Anyway the gt-100 claims:
> Unique Accel pedal provides simultaneous control of multiple parameters
>unique
Well anyway if the older model also offers this I'll be happy. The pedals seem highly customizable beyond just EQ, too, which is neat. Who wouldn't want to program their own distortion pedal!
>>
>>65443031
>I'm actually thinking of getting one now that they are cheap used.
Yeah i got it for $200 in like '08. Still have it, works fine. The prev. owner left a bunch of silly patches he made in it. You won't be disappointed, it has more shit than you'll ever need. You can mess around with effects you'd never buy on their own, too. As for the "weak" amp sims other anon said, yeah.. but if you get an amp you like you won't need that anyway. Just put it on a table when you're messing with it. I've spent so much time hunched over like an idiot fucking with the buttons while it was on the floor.
>>
>>65443031
I do like some of the results from computer programs, but I like the portability footswitching of dedicated units. I often switch between my computer and my amp depending on needing feedback, or just not wanting to fire up my computer when I play.

I'll look into the newer unit, it definitely offers all the features I want, so if I can customize the amps enough that may be the way to go. The demos I found did have an obviously far too dark tone, so I think it's fair to say it was difficult to judge their overall quality. I haven't found a video that showcases the tones I want, but if there's detailed enough configuration, I might take a leap of faith and try to shape the tone myself.
>>
>>65443119
Yeah you can customize the effects, including the wah. You can make it pitch shifter or speed the delay up for some ridiculous noises. I use seperate wah/eq and sometimes dist pedal.
>>
>>65443274
>I've spent so much time hunched over like an idiot fucking with the buttons while it was on the floor.
Haha, I spend most of my time with my zoom cross-leged on the floor wondering, "is this really how shoegaze works?" It's about time I looked up proper Indian posture!

Dont think you can do 2 dist at once. You can use a dist or od, chorus, delay, reverb, eq, and 2 "fx" like compressor or tremolo, and phaser, flanger, slicern, etc. You can also change the way they'd all be in the "chain" as if they were seperate pedals
>>
>>65443789
I could be wrong about the 2 dist thing. You could prob put like a fuzz with a boss dist in the custom setting. It just gets overwhelming with the amount of crap you can do
>>
>>65443789
Cool. In that case, since you can't have 2 distortions, the next best thing for me would be being able to switch between any two distortion pedals instantly. Y'know, blues driver for the leads, fuzz for the solo. Can you do that with a foot switch, or do you have to rotate the dial? Will the parameters be what you preset them to on each pedal?

Sorry for all the questions, I am reading the manual as we speak so feel free to ignore this.

I recently got my first active bass, and since I basically always left my EQ flat I finally get to play around with that. All sound examples here were done with the bass directly into an audio interface, no post processing or effects whatsoever. Just the onboard pre-amp and the onboard EQ.
https://clyp.it/mltgszdg

You can get some really useful sounds out of that just with the controls on the bass. I'd also be interested to get guesses from my fellow bass players what bass it could be (or just the pickup configuration) and what kind pricepoint you'd guess it at based on the sound.

Not really. It's quite challenging to be a truly good guitarist, but it's not difficult at all to be a competent guitarist. Competent guitarists are a dime a dozen, and even really good guitarists aren't hard to find since so many people are into it.

A lot of clarity, sounds a lot like single coils, or maybe just buckers with big pole pieces. I wouldn't be able to guess the brand. Price point... Around $300? Unless you've upgraded the pickups. At first I thought it was all bridge pickup, but maybe the neck pickup just isn't that far forward. It would help to know what strings you've got on it to guess.
>>
>>65443895
Well what i do is set up one patch for one thing, and the next you can add or remove an effect. You get 4 patches per bank, so you could set it up like clean, add dist, add dist and delay or chorus, and so on. You can switch between banks with your foot too. The way i justified the purchase was the ge-7 was like 150$ alone, and a chorus and a dist and it's already worth it. So if you only use 3 things it's still a bargain. Dont worry about all the inquiries. That's what the general is for.
>>

Well, I've listened again knowing the strings, and I'm pretty confident it's a p-j or p-soapbar. The active preamp is taming the inductance of the pickups, so it makes sense that the neck pickup is something in series. It could be a bucker, but I think I hear a greater tonal variation between the low and high strings than when the bridge pickup is selected. This implies the pickup is canted or split, and since buckers and soaps aren't usually canted I guess P.

Post pics anon, I'm ready for judgment. If I get this right my e-peen is huge.
>implying anons get e-peen
Why didn't I buy into the avatarfag way?

Ok, then, to me it sounds like it has two buckers, or two singles.
It seems quite versatile, at first not so much but all the configurations you showed show potential.
Basses that I've tried that give me the same impression:
BTB Ibanez, some SR Ibanez (not the bartolini loaded ones), ESP/LTD, and also I guess there's the option of it being a Music Man pup loaded onto whatever bass, since those MM pups tend to have that punchyness and are quite versatile with a nice eq running them. Pricepoint... dunno man, I'm terrible with this, basses are bit less complicated tonally imo, I think above a certain price you just pay for quality and commodities, so I'd say it's over 300, maybe not close or past 1000 because by then I'd have expected to hear coil splitting or specific bass/treble cuts, etc.
Ah maybe some yamaha rbx with humbuckers, but not their BB line since that one has a single coil kind of tone and noise (and I'm sure that line is passive).

Your asio driver isn't asigned properly, you need to change it in the driver options.
I finally gave upon mine, it was a massive pita. Got a Pod X3 Live used for a hundred bucks and never looked back.

Thanks, buddy, will do! I'm not well versed in the pickups world, so I will take your advice into account.

It's an MIJ TUNE bass, they're not well known here but held in pretty high regards. New price is 200,000Yen, I got it for 350€ used. 2 Humbuckers, but they're very slim and the neck one is actually fairly close to the bridge side, impressive. Seems to be the case that sound quality on basses plateaus fairly quickly, this bass is really well built and a blast to play so I guess that's where the money goes.
And for the e-peen, only the first example had no EQ (just cut trebel) and pickup blend in the middle position, everything else had pretty heavy EQing going on with the 18V preamp.
That was fun, thanks for participating!

changed everything in the asio options, increased and reduced the latency still no sound from the guitar, just feedback
gonna try to reinstall the guitar rig, i installed it after the asio driver
that means im fucked right?

It's honestly pretty obvious that you want that hot brown dick in your rectum so just come to terms with it.
You'll feel so much freer without carrying around the secret that you want to receive some sweet sweet buttlovin' from your swarthy, nimble-fingered bassist.

Post pics of your pickup height.
>>
>>65444679
Fuck man, that's quite the steal if that's their street price when new.
And yeah, price is mostly about physical quality and features, since the electronic components are not complicated or special enough to warrant high prices (bass is not subjected to as much black magic as guitars are).
Still, that's quite nice, cheers on your new piece.

If it wasn't for the headstock and pick up names I would have said that's an ibanez.

No clue how to properly do that, but here I guess? I just left the PU height the way the previous owner had it, and I'm pretty sure he didn't touch it.
>>65444892
Thanks, it's not exactly the street price, this is a bit of an older model and the comparable one is 200,000Yen directly from the manufacturer, but you pay import taxes + shipping on top of that as well.
>>65444952
Really? It's a pretty distinct body shape, reminded me of a marleaux consat for a second the first time I saw it.

Strat and Flying V obviously, kylkthxbye.

Oh, I've never seen those, interesting. I guess the lower horn is kinda similar.

Sounded like a warwick to me at first, then again many active HH basses will sound similar. Looks kinda unique, I dig it.

Go ahead and keep buying overpriced US/MiM fenders because anything asian is "cheap chink shit"

why would I be jealous? I wouldn't touch a modern American Fender with a 10 foot pole

Whatever. Getting upset about something so inconsequential looks pretty stupid from where I'm sitting, sounds like you guys need to grow up a little bit.

You're the one who started shitting on someone because they have a Japanese made instrument, lol. And then you post your instruments as if it's some accomplishment to own a Fender.

Damn, I wish I spent $400 on a MIM Strat instead of an instrument that actually sounds and plays decently without any modifications.
