to me it was reminiscent of Mark Hollis in terms of simplicity, allowing each note to slowly rear its head and breathe life into the track. The vocal samples are sort of gospel influenced as well which tinges the album with a sense of hopefulness and comfort. I just like it! But it is very minimal so if you're not into that don't worry

Nah, I'm from Canada. I can't remember how I found him but was blown away by how good it was. I thought he was just some Soundcloud rapper but I was completely wrong. It's a great record though. I love how he's rapping but still almost singing at parts. That Busdriver featured will get him some more supporters too.

I've been a big fan of Rick for a while now (he used to release under Alvin Band) and this is easily his best work yet imo, and is really what Painting With should have been.
He wears his AnCo influence on his sleeve, but it feels so genuine and the guy is truly a musical genius.

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I didn't even know he had a new album coming out until I saw the review show up on Pitchfork.
It's really great though, and I've probably given it a listen almost every day since it came out though. Really great industrial hip-hop.
It would probably have gotten more attention if Bottomless Pit didn't come out.
Bottomless Pit is a lot more chaotic, weird, and manic fun, but Asphalt for Eden is on all accounts however the better album.

It sounds more like a collection of lieder parsed through a future garage framework rather than pop songs. I've always been absolutely in love with Blake's keyboard playing and production, but his first two albums didn't hit me as hard as his early EPs. This album though, it's so musical and fantastic. The production feels organic and bare bones, yet rich in detal. I don't like the lyrics that much, but he has clearly evolved in his songwriting.

this album pisses me off because this guy is so talented that he could certainly make a good primitivism album but the production on this is so poor. in the best records of the genre (Fahey, Sandy Bull) the deep guitar tones are so resonant and the melodies fall gorgeously on this vibrant backdrop. but this album sounds like you're sitting in front of a guy who's really good at playing guitar. it gets boring.
