Lyrically, it's a somewhat boring romance falling apart scenario that nearly pales in comparison to the band it emerged from (caP'N Jazz) but it makes up for it with some neat lyrical twists and catchy verses while having this sense of integrity within in instrumentals, that are complex but still maintain this weird honest and serene vibe that I enjoy a lot. It's an essential in my opinion, and it still holds up, especially in comparison to it's various knock-offs that came from the emo revival in the late 2000s - early 2010s. If you like this album, you should seriously check out caP'n Jazz, they're one of my all time favorite bands and are the band that preceded American Football. Both are fantastic bands regardless and I think they should be considered essentials for how influential their sound was, especially if you're into punk, math rock, or emo.
