Sounds like deep and sad version of Lego Movie. Driving 9 year olds to suicide is probably not a good idea for a box office hit

Now I think Hot Wheels were indeed cool, but really, if you didn't like cars as a child, they weren't that great. Obligatory mention that with Lego you could experiment endlessly, feeding your autism and wasting brain cells on storing unneeded information like where you kept blue 1x4 blocks.

Oh shit this is fun as fuck alright nostalgia time!
I was also an only child which explains why I had so much, also this was the only toy I played with growing up, dead ass

Hot wheels Ford Complex
Hot wheels car wash
Hot wheels mcdonalds
Hot wheels car wash tower
hot wheels Super Electronic City Center
Hot wheels snap on tune up shop (My dad worked for snap on)
hot wheels super electronic garage
Hot wheels snap on gas station
Hot wheels trainset (idk what it was called but it was purple and came with two track sets)
Hot wheels radical roadway
Hot Wheels Mega Garage
Hot Wheels super highway
(As I look deeper into this I did not have the America's Highway set but instead accumulated them overtime in the 90's/00's

Motorized sets I had were:

Hot wheels tornado twister
Hot wheels octoblast
Hot wheels shark park
Hot Wheels fire ball
Hot Wheels
hot wheels Jeff Gordon trackset

I also had the huge fucking highway 35 collectors track that you had to send in the cars to get .

(I also had this yellow snake one with rubber bands, One with a robot with coster in the name and some sets from like 05 that had an emphasis on customization that used lime green heavily )

Along with having some sizzlers, and a ton of the yellow orange from the 90s

Yeah, I guess that's a Murican thing.

You see, I'm Russian, in 1998 we had a financial crisis. Average monthly wage was around $200 back then in the country. Needless to say I got anything only on birthdays. Lego was overpriced as well as other toys.

Moreover, we Russians live in flats, usually around 30-40 square meters. So not much fun trying to play Hot Wheels 3x4 room too.

Ironically I had that one in your pic too. Actually I didn't like mixing them, as it was kinda clashing, but depends on which sets you had. I tried to maintain stylistic cohesiveness.

I think Lego went kinda downhill in terms of design since around 1998. The UFO series sucked and looked like cyber goth/neon rave. They were really hard to combine with other sets.

Pre-1998, however… Lego fucking ROCKED. Especially space, but everything else like coty and medieval too. Pic very related

And actually I think they wet better since then, the designs got better since around 2005 or so… Too bad I'm not 9 anymore

I didn't have any of the UFO ones, but I always liked the alien heads and masks from that series. I really liked the jungle and desert exploration sets with Johnny Thunder. I missed out on all the cool Medieval sets, they weren't in stores by the time I got into Lego. And the prices on them, even in the mid 2000s when I started buying old sets were way too high.

I wish I was 9.

Funny enough I don't care about cars at all now, I don't even own one (I got to school in NYC so no point)

I'm just a nostalgic 19 year old that wanted to go down memory lane, it's not everyday you think about the toys you used to play with, and it was deadass the only toy I would play with as a kid, my dad was also a mechanic so I think that's where that came from. I grew out of hot wheels at like 12, but I'm back home for the summer and I lowkey am considering pulling them out the attic

Oh yeah, I had this set. With the life-sized mask to look like a total special needs child

But if you look at the set, it's just these 4 quarter-circles which you can't combine with anything, obviously… They were cool, but that neon just didn't go with anything else.

Actually that was around time when I was starting to look at the "adventure" sets you entioned… Egypt, jungle, dinosaurs… They were ripping off Spielberg pretty hard, didn't they. But the design was on point IMO.

The last sets I bought were Arctic. I saw them at my friend's and liked them a lot. But again, they suffered from having too much orange.

Around 1998-2002 was a pretty so-so time for Lego otherwise… Different xtreme sportz shit, racing, sets of 6 same Bionicles, movie-making sets with those cameras. I much rather preferred 1997 sets and prior—somehow I managed to play a wrong generation kid when I was 9, go figure.

>
I refuse to accept that I'm not the target audience
kek, I almost wish I kept up with it even though I'm not the target audience anymore. I used to have an autistically in-depth knowledge of the lore, to the point where I read the fan wiki for fun. Now I can't remember jack shit, and I never really got any resolution as to what ended up happening other than that Makuta died and their god lives in a mask now.

>mfw I bought all six every year with my birthday and christmas money and enjoyed all of them
admittedly I just liked the characters, how they looked, and building them; I never played with them like an action figure
>>
>>65381152
Basically Bionicle was butt-rock and nu-metal of Lego

>>65381218
I really liked how they looked too, but with Bohrok they made 6 literally same toys. The only differences were the color palettes, the masks inside of them and the hands. That's it. Even less variety than the original 2001 line.

I mean, this is pretty far from what Lego was known for. In essence Bionicles were action figures, but designed by Lego team. You couldn't build shit out of them, their replayability so to say approached zero. They looked cool but I never liked action figures that much. Should have asked parents for some anime babe with tiddies instead
>>
>>65381278
>Bohrok
fuck, I forgot about those. yeah, that was pretty silly and the later models had a lot more flexibility in how you could use the parts.

So I was googling later Bionicles, and they even released another lineup of Bohroks in 2003. The difference? Palette swap. Yep, I remember now, that was when I called it quits. Fucking A, Lego, fucking A.

Now, actually stumbled upon picrelated now and I admit—this one is really cool. A little too busy but the pattern on the shield is great. I guess this was the part of the resurgence of good design in Lego.
