Good evening, you living memes.
Went to thrift store. Found some neat stuff I know, ome neat stuff I didn't knew I knew and some stuff that I don't know at all.
But for the purpose of the thrift tournament, we'll have to pick between
>The Energizer's Distance to Happy Trance
or
>Main - a big grey box with 6 CDs in it and that's actually worth a couple tens on discogs so even if it's not good it will repay the 10 bucks I spent for everything
and the one that doesn't count
>Funky Tramway, which I didn't knew I knew since Janko Nilovic, who made it and whom I know, isn't directly credited on the front or back
also two other cool CDs. I used to have that Little Prince audiobook when I was a kid and we lost it one of the times we moved. Gad I found it.
Still, I'm not sure if I should go for 6 CDs in a box or some trance which I know has very little chance of being good.

I don't really feel like studying at all, honestly. I studiet pretty hard during the semester.
>King Crimson - Beat
I really like Discipline, but this is an even worse Talking Heads rip-off. Some songs here are just worse versions of others, like Neurotica being a worse version of Frame By Frame. It's very technical, but only kind of interesting.
5
>Disco Inferno - The 5 EPs
Damn good comp. This imo is much better and more diverse than DI Go Pop. I felt it was much more forward thinking and came from so many different backgrounds it was impossible not to love.
8
>Mount Eerie - Lost Wisdom
First couple tracks made me excited for the rest of the album, but the other 20 minutes of this album were pretty unsatisfying. Phil can write short, satisfying songs, but there are very few shorter tracks here with anything of substance.
6
>Hamilton Cast Recording
As someone who's spent a lot of time with theater, this really was just unsatisfying as all hell. Some musicals are just weak spots for me, honestly. I love even shitty musical soundtracks like the South Park Movie one. This one waaaaaay too long, though. Out of the almost 50 song track list there was maybe five okay tracks? The fusion of hip hop and show tunes is pretty cringey and I didn't really enjoy this much at all.
3
>Pale Cocoon - 黄金時代 (Golden Age)
Not as jarring and unsettling as their other stuff, but has that fantastic ethereal feeling I love. Much too short to hold atmosphere for too long imo, but a satisfying listen nonetheless.
8
>Pale Cocoon - 青空の実験室 (Laboratory Under the Blue Sky) / Secret Sounds
Now THIS is some shit I could get into. Less dream poppy than the other EP, and focuses more on atmosphere and ethereal wave-y ness (?) which has a tremendous payoff.
I should probably listen to the other stuff released by Pafe Records for my next chart. That'd be fun.
>>65360191
Ween "others"
>Erica Peterson's Flaming Crib Death
An absolute disaster. Objectively terrible in a really intriguing way that always kept me loving "GodWeenSatan". Not as "middle school-y" as I'd expect and actually a lot of fun. Not so much that I can't except how terrible it is, though.
6
>The Crucial Squeegie Lip
The real fuckness. Just terrible and not even in a fun way. Some songs like "You Fucked Up" are just worse versions of songs that would later be recorded actually well. All of the spoken word tracks aren't really funny at all, and weren't even clear enough or not drowned out with shitty-sounding effects that it didn't even because tangible or enjoyable in any way. Fuck off.
1
>>65360216
I can already tell I'm not gonna be enjoying these 20+ minute tracks with no substance very much at all, but there's some really interesting stuff on this collection. Some of the most unique shit I've ever heard from the Lowercase/Onkyo/EAI scene in ever.
~10 minutes of silence isn't as engaging as some may think, and honestly is the most distracting thing ever that totally kills any song's atmosphere. Hope there's little more of that.

Have you guys ever instantly rated an album 10/10? What was it?

>>65361897
you can call me a pleb for a lot of things, but this is the opposite of one of them. Half the album was absolute shitty """"""prog""""""" acoustic moments with the cheesiest vocalist I've heard. The vocalist that performed during the death metal moments wasn't half bad.
>>65361984
Alright. Will do in sync though because memes.
Hey, what's some good melanholic/sad but commercial and normie music? I need it for a school project
I've watched some bad films, but this really is something else. I think it might be the worst I've seen since I watched Dracula Untold, if not even topping out that one. There's almost nothing at all to make you sympathize with the protagonists, even though the antagonist is sort of a bitch but not really until the end. Everything in the plot is just a meaningless farce to segue between different battle scenes that in themselves also make little sense and matter very little to the overall plot. It doesn't help that the battle scenes themselves have awful choreography, the actors are really terrible throughout, and it's all really bad CGI. And of course, the whole journey was basically meaningless as well, as revealed in the end. "The true power was within me the whole time I just needed to figure it out" is such an annoying trope. Also they played Islamic music which doesn't belong in a film played out in ancient Egypt.
Also watched Zootopia the other day and it was pretty alright. I laughed out loud at some scenes.

Recent listens:
Eric Clapton – 461 Ocean Boulevard
Straightforward 70s Clapton action. Less unique than anything by Yardbirds, Cream, Dominoes, etc. A few shining moments, such as the opener “Motherless Children”, the sickly sweet unintentional-Beatles-parody “Let It Grow”, and an adequate cover of “I Shot the Sherriff” (which is great on a technicality, because the original is great). Just as many forgettable moments, though, but nothing offensive or irritating, so 3.0
The Meters – Rejuvenation
Woo, holy shit get ready for the funk. Having only heard “Look-Ka Py Py” before this, I wasn’t expecting vocals in a Meters album. A good amount of that album’s charisma, for me, came from the lack of vocals, substituting in a variety of vocal-esque toots and squanks, bridges, etc. These are still present here, but the vocals sort of cast them at a lower priority, which is a shame. A more conventional funk record, then. However, these are minor gripes. Everything here is as funky, fun and fresh (alliteration) as I was hoping it would be, and no complaints about the actual vocals either, they just were unexpected. The songs here are amazing, and it was exciting to see the Meters stretch to 4-, 5- and 11-minute song lengths. 4.0
Neil Young – On the Beach
Comfy sound here, but nice and sinister as well. I’m not great at lyrics that don’t beat me over the head, so I know Neil Young is in “rewards repeated listens” territory for me, and I’m always happy to allow that, because it pays off with this guy. 3.5 for now based on the cozycreepy sound
Mort Garson - The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds
Absolutely adorable! :D So dated it’s practically a time capsule. I’m a sucker for over the top hammy psychedelia, especially when it’s not manifested just in extensive guitar- and Moog-noodlement. Cyrus Faryar’s narration is just perfect. It helps that the music here is really damn interesting and catchy. 3.5

Squarepusher - Hard Normal Daddy
12 Songs; 62 Min. 1997.
This album is really interesting and cool. Even though the album has many 8+ minute long tracks, they don't feel too long or tiring. Everything on this album just feels well paced; it all goes on for perfect amounts of time. I legitimately had to check if the song had changed at some point because the tracks just seem to morph so nicely throughout and stays fresh. At the same time, however, every track still sounds like they're from the same album; they're all just wonderfully dynamic. The only issue I really have is that out of all the standout tracks, only track I found rather memorable was E8 Boogie. Regardless, killer album. 8.1.
Favourite Tracks: E8 Boogie, Fat Controller, Coopers World, Male Pill Part 13
Least Favourite Tracks: Chin Happy, Rebus
I like the new avalanches single

I'm downloading a few albums by Gentle Giant. I will listen them entirely in the next couple days. Today, I've got some movies to watch.
>Fennesz - Black Sea:
Fairly unexciting glitch/drone ambient. I found the album Becs to hold much more engaging qualities than this one. After getting a taste of the percussion used towards the end of The Colour of Three, I was disappointed he didn't expand upon this as prominently as I had hoped. Glide is the accumulation of all I had hoped coming into this album, but sadly nothing else held as much interest. This song builds in intensity through a progressively glitched atmosphere, industrial grinds subtly introduced aid in carrying the song with a textured upheaval. Through the noise a batch of hopeful tones break free rewarding the listener with brief sublimity before it breaks apart into microtones broadcast from the void (I kept imagining the realm of Eraserhead). Why can't the whole album be like this song! The titular track and some of the shorter ones were pretty relaxing but nothing to write home about, incorporation of acoustic guitar gave a nice human touch.
Favorite songs: Glide, The Colour of Three

Electro-swing has its roots in EDM, which this clearly isn't. Sampling a swing track doesn't make it "electro-swing" the same way that sampling comedy routines doesn't make SILY a novelty album. It's straight retarded.
And it's disappointing, yes, but the fact that there's at least 10 people who have given it a half star is pretty laughable. Anti-hype is 10 times worse than hype I swear.

Genre is supposed to describe the song, and not necessarily what it "sounds like."
Stereolab, for example "sounds" a lot like Krautrock, but tagging it as such is incorrect, since krautrock is a time/location description and doesn't describe sound at all.
Also, new Avalanches track isn't EDM at all.
>>65370930

The Hausu soundtrack is almost surreal as the movie. It randomly dips into Jazz Fusion, has strangely punchy bass, and is a strong contender for corniest synths of all time.

>>65370648
Julee Cruise - Floating Into the Night
>>65371412
That's fair.
But I mean Krautrock was originally just a blanket statement by the British press to describe bands that weren't even that similar. When a modern band like Stereolab is tagged as "krautrock" it's just because they sound a lot like Can, and there's nothing really tangible tying them back to the genre other than that.

originally, i know, but the way i see it it's been defined quite a bit closer than that retroactively, by way of tracing its influence, or cutting out bands that fit neatly with prog or psych rock groups. still loose ofc

Virgo - Virgo (1989)
>chicago house
It's got some wonderful synth sounds, but other than that this is actually kinda cheesy and way too reliant one theme. I hate to say this, but every song really does sound the same, or at least similar. Sure, there are different beats and different synth melodies, but it's all the exact same sound. Luckily, it's a nice and ethereal as hell sound, kinda like floating through a kickass party in space, but it gets old /real/ fast.
2.5+
Eek-a-Mouse - Wa-Do-Dem (1981)
>dancehall, deejay, reggae
The toasting is amazing, Eek-a-Mouse has such an idiosyncratic vocal style that it elevates these generic as hell riddims into really cool territory. That doesn't mean the riddims still aren't generic as absolute hell though. There are a few songs that kinda have heavier guitar work and are more riff-driven, I guess, and those are real cool, but other than those I just can't get into the riddims at all. At least that toasting is still wonderful.

Hey Nyar I listened to the Dan and Real Life Soundtrack and quite enjoyed it. Minus maybe the last track and most of the tracks not by him I thought the songwriting was pretty damn good. >Jandek - What Was Out There Disappeared
Dapper as fuck Sterling looks at you like you aren’t there anymore.
Acoustic guitar is back. This one is pretty song-packed for a modern day studio Jandek release. 8 tracks!
Going to Edinburgh starts off with more of the pacy strumming we heard recently. The protagonist (who sounds like a dying dog, just as usual) wants to go to Edinburgh with “her” but instead, it seems like he left by himself and decided to stay there for good to get over her (?). “This was a holiday / And it’s to work now” shows you how seriously he takes this.
Girls Wear Gowns marks the return of my beloved harmonica. It still sounds the same way it did on Later On. It wails along to slow open strums in the back ala early Jandek. Even Smith himself unsurely starts with his newer vocal style, quietly raising his voice into the expected vocal performance. I assume this album was made about Scotland, because here he name-drops kilts and Edinburgh once again. Kippers for breakfast too. What’s a kipper? It’s a fishy sort of fish.
Will There Be No More Photos sneaks in more of the added classic style guitar playing into the new era variations. The “he” sings about not having any more photos of “her” in the future because “she” left. I got this feeling that “her” leaving wasn’t a voluntary thing (maybe death took “her”?). The protagonist, however, realizes that you can’t rewrite the past and just wait for what the future will bring. Bleak track, lightened up by the fact how much Sterling was really feeling the track. He did a foot stomp somewhere at 6:36, keeping himself going.
Harmonica returns on Your Eyes. Starting off solo, it leads into to 3 sudden strums. Howling again. The typical character found in Sterling Smith’s oeuvre still wishes he could disappear. This time the disappearance occurs from someone’s view. He wants to disappear so that he doesn’t “crowd” the other person’s view.
>>65374331
For sure, you'll love it. Ping Pong is great too.
>>65374375
The Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea
>>65374541
Broken Leaves opens with the same harmonica opening section which at some point tears through my ears because of how loud he blows into the thing. Once again, the guitar enters but this time with a slow strum. The all-powerful protagonist is either playing God, or requesting him. He definitely seems like a force to be reckoned with. However, all that is left in the end are broken leaves. Empty feeling.
Jumping Off leaves the harmonica and opens with a single strum. Slower stabs in the vein of the early Corwood catalogue. Talks about taking the jump into the unknown, taking chances and risking. Sometimes it is a good thing. He takes the jump by trying to rip the guitar open for a couple of seconds at the end there.
Painstakingly Critical has the narrator criticising himself a lot. Not excluding the rest either. Smith sings about all the things the protagonist does. Oh Sterling. Simple track. Neat track.
Lucky Cat closes off the album. More harmonica intros, foot taps and that strum (hesitant). The cool cat Jandek goes to the beach with his loved one, eats rats and that seems to be entertaining his significant other. He is calm and strums the album away at ease. Nothing strange here, just Jandek things.
Good album! I imagine this is what his more traditional stuff from the early 80s would sound like if he got older. I enjoyed it.
7/10

Would these work:
After Dinner - Paradise of Replica
Guernica - Kaizo e no Yakudo
Laurie Anderson - Big Science
Camille - Le Fil
Doopees - Doopee Time
Tujiko Noriko - From Tokyo to Naiagara
Solex - Low Kick and Hard Bop
David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive
>>65374622
I just heard Doopee Time. Shit is Doopee.
Tis is what I've been up to as far as new listens
Once I finish my exams in 2 weeks I will be full fucking force
>>65374375
Seconding Scott 3
Also Wolf Parade - Apologies To The Queen Mary ?
>>65374653
Tbh I wish I could love it more because I find it really unique and interesting but it just doesn't go above a 3.5/5 for me. Definitely Doopee stuff though.
>>65374695
same. If it were like 20 minutes shorter and the skits didn't drag out so long it would be a masterpiece.
It's a lot of fun but subtly unnerving. What the fuck was the cancer part about?? The Caroline, No cover at the end really shook me.
>>65374741
Agreed. This is the only album I know that makes me feel like this and it's a terrible feeling.
>>65374331
oh shit tatami is my fave too

Endangered Species, maybe (linked >>65372481)
Realiy vs The Optimist (rock but whatever, its good)
Infinite Ellipse and Head With Open Fontanel (prog but whatever, its good)
A Little Man and a House and the World Wide Web (same as above)
ELO - Time
>>65374925
Habitual and Little Man is based. Thanks for the rest.
>>65374375
The B-52s - Mesopotamia
ELO - Time
Blancmange - Mange Tout
ABC - Lexicon of Love
Janelle Monae - the Archandroid
seconding Tujiko Noriko, although it's more in the "going electronically bonkers" vein rather than "heavily produced"
>>65374888
Nice trips.
Now you have to listen to all of them.
>>65374925
>Go
By Dexter Gordon, right? ;8)
>>65375058
>Janelle Monae - the Archandroid

>>65376379
good nite pigerroo
Dropping "reviews" now b/c bored and don't want to wait two hours till next thread
>Doopees - Doopee Time
Semi-already reviewed this, but what the hell? Why is something this energetic and fun suddenly have a segment about cancer?? Can't help but think of the Beach Boys throughout this whole thing, even minus that Caroline, No cover.
7
>Archagathus - Canadian Horse
Hahahaha what the hell
4
>Boris - Heavy Rocks
It's like Pink but with less staying power and half as memorable
6
>Björk - Volta
Bad. I'm having trouble even coming up with things to have because the album itself is just so forgettable.
3
>Björk - Debut
A lot different than I excpected. The cover made me think it would be cutesy and folk-esque. What I got was a lot of house-inspired alt dance tracks. And while it pays off on the more satisfying tracks like "Venus as a Boy" and "Big Time Sensuality", this wasn't really as memorable as her other works
6
>King Crimson - Starless and Bible Black
It's Red but much worse.
4
>Saint Pepsi - Hit Vibes
Fuck. Now I have to say "I like a vaporwave album" now. This sucks. I want to hate this so hard but it's too infectious and uplifting. I know the dude is literally just looping funk samples, adding a lot of bass and reverbed 80s-esque snare, but that's the best part about sampling: you get to just hear choice cuts. I wish it was pure future-funk and ditched the shitty slow tracks like "Together", "I Tried", and the transition tracks, but overall I would say this album is a lot of fun. Try it if you've never liked a vaporwave album before.
7
What next?
>The Residents - Mark of the Mole
>rec'd by Torts
Eyeball meme men stop making jokes but also don't. Should've listened to some of their earlier albums more thoroughly beforehand but w/e, as it is no thanks 2.5+
>>65377026
>>65377040
Frick forget Ween stuff:
Ween "extras"
>Axis: Bold as Boognish
Just as terrible as Squeegee Lip. Sounds like some shit I'd make in middle school and isn't even shitty fun like their first tape. Shit just sucks.
1
>Craters of the Sac
Just a much worse version of Shinola, which I actually really like. This shit is half worse mixes of songs released elsewhere and half shitty songs like on their early tapes. Bad.
3
So on disc three, I really enjoyed the last track a lot and sort of enjoyed the first one, while the middle two were just terrible. Disc four was all terrible, except for the last track which I LOVED. I'm seeing a lot of variation here but I'm starting to regret listening to all this Onkyo already and I really hope no one recs it to me ever again.
>>65377027
Torts didn't rec that, Yamir did
>>65377026
Nujabes next
>>65377040

gonna go s/t smdh -_-
>>65377064
gotcha
So close
>>65377141
You've got this dogman
Quick update: Just one more listen each for Crime of the Century and Late For the Sky, then I can focus on my tourney and Q3 here. Thrift tourney upload tomorrow morning most likely.
yep, this is worth it for Are We the Waiting and that Last of the American Girls/She's A Rebel medley
plus, i always like songs that feature multiple lead singers, and some vocal harmonizing is never a bad idea
expected a bit more tho
had to amend a score. Been using this rating system for months, and I finally got to use pink.
and I made this. took a couple of... HOURS!? fuck. no wonder i'm tired. I hope someone gets some use out of it.
>>65377348
You're Sondre Lerche, aren't you?

Smokestack is best andrew hill
Richard Davis is a god tier bassist
>>65377270
Huh. I expected it to be terrible + it had a lot of the shit tracks from 21st century breakdown.
I'm also interested on your opinions on chess but just be yerself dude!!!!

Listening to Dopethrone right now, solid 7/10 I guess.

Hey, you're going to have a big gap in your listening when you finish Jandek!
Though you do have that furtwangler box, huh?
Classic dogwander, listening to a million things

>>65377669
You're welcome, dude. I'm glad to have made it (and not just to throw it at anons like sdc does with musical abortions)

who get
>>65377270
>i always like songs that feature multiple lead singers
actually probably not true btw
>>65377669
well, it does drag around the middle
plus, it's kind of redundant to have that record cuz yeah, it stays pretty true to green day but i mean, it's not worse
>>65377781
>>65377785
nice. man i want the rest of the album to dabble into other "uncool" genres and tropes now, like idunno. i want an icp and a fred durst feature. you know, all to push buttons, and for the act of re-claiming stuff like that as aesthetically desirable. but that's wishfulthink, and the reality will just be more shitposting because electroswing is a dirty word
>>65377785
>>65377781
I would say "shit get" but this is actually so true
new thread when
>>65377738
I still have Jandek's live performances but I will eat them at a slower pace.
The furtwangler box is on CD 17 I believe. 100 or so to go.
Probably gonna finish Puce Mary's discog at some point too.
I feel like I stopped listening to a lot of new music during my X-Files binges, but now it is getting better.

I need to get on that Puce Mary discography. That split album she made with Loke Rahbek had me intrigued.
But first, Aube.
