It's almost the middle of 2016, what are some of your favorite Hip Hop albums or mixtapes that came out this year so far?

Also what are a few you are looking forward to?

Not much remarkable even though there's been a lot of releases by good artists this year. Hopefully Turbo Grafx 16 will save us.
>>
r/hiphopheads is a better board for this kind of thing

/mu/ has pleb taste in hip hop tbqh
>>
>>65344536
It depends really. /mu/ has some people who know a ton about hiphop and a lot of plebs, /r/hhh is pretty standard as tastes.
>>
>>65344826
i just took a visit to r/hhh and learned about 5 albums i trusted /mu/ to be on top of

>>65344228
these are 3 of them, but this is my post so it doesn't count

>>
>>65344974
Yeah, I sub to /r/hhh for my news on releases and shit, but if I want to discuss something, I much prefer /mu/. /r/hhh users generally just follow the heard as far as major releases and have a much narrower perspective on music normally. Discussions on /mu/ are way more interesting unless we're talking about an album like MBDTF.
>>
>>65345086
i haven't tried to actually talk about music with other people on reddit, but i feel like every hip hop thread here eventually turns into some ignorant racist shit and memes
>>
TLOP and Coloring Book both have great masterpiece songs on them but as a whole each album is flawed however the general theme/sound of those albums is what the future of hip hop should trend towards.

Ye and Chance are going to save hip hop. Fuck trap.
>>
>>65345241
Trap music is really just gangsta rap struggling for it's life in the face of inevitable death.
>>
>>65345681
Like I would be able to respect trap if it wasn't just pop music for black people but that is all it is right now--commercial garbage

gangster rap needs to die so hip hop can live

Yoni & Geti - Testarossa
Kanye West - The Life of Pablo
Aesop Rock - The Impossible Kid
Lushlife - Ritualize
Spark Master Tape - Silhouettes of a Sunkken City
Babyfather - BBF Hosted by DJ Escrow
Denzel Curry Imperial

also, based on the singles the new Pusha T and new Avalanches albums sound like they might be pretty great
>>
>>65346724
realistically chance, thug, and kanye are the best of the year hands down.
>>
>>65348302

that's an interesting interpretation. hadn't thought of that

personally, UU and TLOP are the only really memorable works so far

>looking forward to (hopefully)

Aesop Rock - The Impossible Kid
Anderson .Paak - Malibu
Death Grips - Bottomless Pit
Kendrick Lamar - Untitled Unmastered

Honorable mention to Pablo. There's so much wrong with that album but I keep listening to it for some reason.

i like how you say this rather than "we're almost halfway through the year" as to not put off black people.
>>
>>65344536
/r/hiphopheads is a good news aggregator for new music and the like but there are so many kids and teenagers on there it's even more impossible to have a discussion on there than it is on here.

There's very little interest in underground or alternative hip hop either.

One of my personal faves coming out of New Zealand
>>
>>65349655
Anderson .Paak isn't hip hop
>>
>>65350442
I can't believe it's receiving the acclaim that it's getting. I don't even mean it in a contrarian manner. It was just such a let down and this is coming from someone who loves Acid Rap. I haven't gone back to it since.
>>
>>65350444
That album art is dope as fuck. As an Australian, I can't stand our hip hop, but I wonder if I can get into this.
>>
>>65350454
I liked Acid Rap too. Coloring Book is so dry, such a textbook "soulful feel good album", it's just crazy how people fall for that shit.
>>
>>65350540
It's note even just that for me. I can get past religious themes, but it was just.. bland? Idk. And I'm all for hip hop features but this was just jam packed to the brim. I like to be able to see a rapper hold their own.
>>
>>65350488
Louie Knuxx is pretty weird if you're coming from aus hip hop. If you aren't thrown off check out his older tape PGT/GRR (progessive gangsta thug, gentleman romance rap) to see where his vision started.

If it's too much I highly recommend you check out others on the roster of NZ label/collective Young Gifted and Broke like Team Dynamite, @Peace, Homebrew

They are much more traditional hip hop but sadly are way better than anything that's been done in this country for the last 10 years.
>>
>>65350577
>if you're coming from aus hip hop
I'm not, I'm just saying, I hate aussie hip hop. I'm a hip hop fantatic. I love American stuff, and a bit of grime, but Aussie shit just makes me cringe.

I'll check them out right now though thanks man.

Do they get much attention in your country?
>>
>>65350258
true.
>>
Saul Williams - Martyr Loser King
Death Grips - Bottomless Pit

Haven't heard much from this year yet
>>
I'm a full blown Kanye stan, and while I liked TLOP, I don't know how people are rating it over albums the likes of The Impossible Kid.

TLOP was a hot mess of a release and the lyrical content was definitely underwhelming, with some of it being straight garbage.

In Aussie dude, and no lol.... although Tom Scott and Lui from @peace live and work from Melb now. Louie Knuxx was actually in or involved with metalcore/punk band Deez Nuts so some people know him from that.

He's back in NZ now but lived in Aus for a few years to escape an assault charge.

Personally I think Louie has such a unique sound, that's the only reason why I warned you in the last post. Wasn't trying to be condescending.
>>
>>65350688
Deez Nuts
Yeah I used to listen to them on the odd occasion. I remember one of them did vocals for a part of a song for BMTH in Suicide Season. Fun party shit but pretty forgettable.
>>
>>65350708
YGB is the portal to great NZ hip hop... leave the cringe of our shit behind. It's worth really getting into imo. There's been some really great artists from the mid aughts till now. I feel like they were never stuck with the stupid obsession with 90s hip hop or some strictly identified 'hip hop' sound like we've been.

Hearing Homebrew's debut studio album made me want to write raps and the whole scene over there really inspires me. Maybe ours can grow into it's own.. I'm hopeful.
>>
>>65350781
Thanks for the insight.
>>
>>65350660
TLOP was like Kanye just having fun. A lot of the lines that get shit are hilarious to me, and the production is standard Kanye. I love it, but it's not that good. It's an album for the fans.
>>
>>65351086
Eh, I didn't expect the deepest meaningful stuff in the world, but some of it was pretty bad you have to admit, especially the "go pro" line. I loved Famous though because fuck Taylor Swift.
>>
probably his best release
>>65341254
>>65341807
yes
>>
>>65351086
no. it was us having fun by enjoying a product of his midlife crisis
>>
>>65344337
NF is a white Christian rapper
>>
>>65352939
I'm pretty sure Kanye has been in a midlife crisis for 9 years.
>>
Why do people meme so much about black folks in here? I mean I get it when it happens on /pol/ or whatever but on /mu/?
>>
Top 5 for me in no order
Aesop- The Impossible Kid
Rittz- Top of the Line
Denzel Curry- Imperial
Kendrick- UU
Murs & 9th Wonder- Brighter Daze
>>
>>65350446
His vocal style is a mixture of rapping and singing, I think we can classify him as hip hop. He also got rappers featured on it.

I remember when even a passing mention of Aesop would get you almost unanimously mocked. Glad to see him finally getting some love here.
>>
>>65355143
I can understand why that happened though, a lot of Aesop fans are cancer.
>>
>>65355356
Without a doubt. I hesitate mentioning him even in real life because of how pretentious his fans can get. The backlash here was still a bit unwarranted, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised that 4chan judged the artist by the fans
