i think the band does an amazing job of displacing the listener into a really shitty situation, and feeling like you're really in a hopeless place like bakersfield, which is a feat very few bands can do

I think it's amazing, It's probably the only album I love because of its flaws rather than despite them. Lou's delivery on there is insanely on point in its fragility and bitterness, especially considering his age. The lyrics are actually pretty incredible in how they mirror the Wedekind plays, and Metallica actually manage to play without restraint for once. And that's not even without mentioning the strength of a track like Junior Dad, which is easily the best thing Lou could have wanted as a swan song. Thought of course I didn't know it would be when I first heard it :(
