No worries, just go to http://www.sporcle.com/games/MRoren/autechre-songs and practice until you get them all memorized. I recommend it, it worked for me.
>>
>>65263373
well no, it's still partially improvised. though i guess it depends on your definition of improvisation. it's sort of hard to explain (you're prob better off digging around for an interview than me trying to clarify) but they have the data stored in the patches but when and how they trigger certain events (and the conditionals and recursive elements that come about from these events being triggered) are done on the fly. therefore different permutations occur.
>>
>>65263492
yeah I know but the songs on AE_LIVE only slightly on each set, so they are the same songs is what I meant.
They don't just play tracks form Exai or whatever,
>>
>>65263622
only slightly vary I mean, so you hear the same track nine times, but i sounds slightly different each time,

Autechre records are purchased solely by bald men in expensive anoraks who would masturbate to a car alarm if it was re-mixed by a German. This impenetrable curtain of misanthropic noise is typical of the menopausal electro-manglers' dogged refusal to bow to convention and produce anything of interest to anyone not either a) bald or b) German. It bleeps. It skronks. It krrraaaanks. But mainly, it blows like a ruddy awful hurricane. Remember, kids; if it sounds like a festering hillock of tune-shy bum-wank, it's because it IS a festering hillock of tune-shy bum-wank. Avoid as you would a bald German.

>>
I've only listened up to Tri Repetae so far. I've heard that Chiastic Slide marks a shift in styles or something to that effect. What does that exactly entail? What's their later work like/how does it compare?

So far:
Incunabula: 444
Amber: Piezo
Tri Repetae: Clipper

Amber took a bit longer to get into though it's definitely grown on me. Inc. and TR were immediately apparent. Haven't listened to the EPs enough yet to determine a favourite.
>>
>>65274103
This. Who needs other music when you have Autechre.
>>
Which elseq is best + Have you listened to it all the way through
>>
>>65274242
You should hear it for yourself. I regret not experiencing it the way you do, following them diving into the abstract.
>>
So, Elseq 1-5 is their best release, isn't?
>>
>>65274337
I can't wait.
>>
>>65274242

It starts to get more abstract Chiastic Slide -> LP5 but it gets really abstract at Confield -> Untilted. Then they start to get a bit less sterile and robotic Quaristice to present. I actually am not that keen on much pre-Chiastic Slide and actually I rarely listen to anything pre-Oversteps or occasionally Quaristice. I think Oversteps, Move of Ten, Exai, L-event, AE_LIVE and elseq 1-5 are their best works and follow a really good and clear progression.
>>
i listen to autechre all the time but i can't name their tracks for shit. call me pleb i guess. just pops up in between my mixes in my edm libary. the abstraction is a nice change of pace from the groove.

This is a good prompt, a new permutation.

Lowride
Montreal
Clipper (the way it unfolds and brings together the "melody" and "harmony" bits at the end is very gratifying)
Cipater
I've never liked LP5 much (a minority opinion it seems), but Arch Carrier is a cute obdurate thing. Far from their best work though.
Pen Expers. They way the melody and harmony fight against the harshness is very beautiful; this is a track where I learned to become obsessed, c. 2002-4. I haven't listened to Confield in a long while and I think it's time again.
I had a recent passion for Draft 7.30 again a few years ago. tossup between IV VV IV VV VIII and Surripere (put it this way: I had BDSM on the brain while re-listening).
LCC desu.
that second-last one from the end, extremely sad. I think it's notwo. its sequel is also nice.
I made myself listen to Oversteps while driving to the Chicago show (hadn't really given it much play), nothing really stands out here either.
But exai is significantly better. I like that fourth track on CD1 (more BDSM suggestions, also the complex, synpocated? rhythm).

>>
>>65303166
why does no one like 3 :(

3>1>5>2>4
>>
>>65303230

Honestly 2 & 3 are tied for me I couldn't really decide
>>
>>65303230
3 is not bad, I just like it the least. mesh cinereaL is cool but eastre and TBM2 are a little too stripped down and uneventful for me.
1 = 4 > 5 > 2 > 3
>>
>>65303303

Yeah exactly why I had to edit my rating
>>
>>65303303
eastre is a really cool drone track. I like TBM2 cuz it's really minimal. It's like a saying a word over and over until it starts to sound weird. mesh cinereaL is a monster track that sounds really melancholic. I'm surprised everyone likes 4. latentcall and 7th slip are worst tracks IMO
>>
it's all about those 2 casual tracks imo.
>>
>>65303352
>latentcall and 7th slip are worst tracks IMO
Whoa dude what, those are some of the best
>>
>>65303352

Yeah I think latentcall is pretty overrated on this board but I still rated 4 pretty highly overall at 3rd
>>
>>65303352
>latentcall
not a fan of this one either 2bh. reminds me too much of an """'idm"""" track
>>
>>65303371
that first sound you hear in 7th slip that plays throughout just sounds cheesy to me. not really likin the groove. and im not a fan of the syro-esque percussion on latentcall
>>
oneum sounds like autechre having a go at a tim hecker track

Even though I thought 3 was the least eventful I needed that break in the middle to keep me sane/zone out for awhile

each time that distorted wash plays in spTh it sounds like an ocean wave crashing. good stuff

>>65304880
pir
>>
>>65304948
That one always comes across to me as happy rather than sad. I always imagine someone trapped underwater and drowning to death over the course of the song, but the progressions reflect the peace that comes after the struggling.
>>
>>65304880
maybe not the saddest but to me LCC is the sound of completely giving up
>>
>>65304880
obvious pick would be Rae, though their saddest is def os veix3
>>

>>
>>65307070
I like the prominent click that plays over the bass drum. It's interesting that they decided to put that there, but—despite how simple that sound is—it really adds to the track.
>>
Has anyone ever listened to their Pirate Radio broadcasts from '91? It's so funny to hear bb Rob&Sean having a laugh.
>>
>>65274242

It's hard to explain exactly, but you're in for a treat. If you're in the right mood, it's an amazing album. It's got an incredibly physical, percussive sound, like all the beats are recorded in factories where the machines are breaking down. But's it's all overlaid with these spectral, choral melodies and synths that give it a mournful, meditative feeling.

>>65309472
i'm not sure why i used the word like "like" a 13 year old girl
>>
>>65309502
I chuckled.
>>
>>65309472
well, it's weird to me that they've always been seen as the "epitome" or w/e of so-called """idm""" because after LP5 they aren't really reminiscent of the other acts classified as such. even in the 90s - apart from amber - their sound was more hip-hop (and not in a downtempo way) than any of the other "idm" dudes apart from some of the guys on skam.

essentially what i'm trying to say is that i've really never considered them "idm" on a sonic level. they just fit in with the scene because they're on warp.

>>65309502
it's fine. makes your post sound more colloquial.
>>
>>65309708
i think its become a residual classifier for their music, but their early works are definitely idm, even thought it contained hip-hop flavors imo. i think part of it is also that by the time the media got around to categorizing their music, they've long since moved away from that type of music. at any rate, I just think it's interesting how most idm artists besides ae have either stopped making music or have still held onto their original sound from the 90s.
>>
>>65307836
fuk yeah
>>
>>65310499
well i suppose i'm just one of those idm skeptics. i don't think it's anything other than a descriptor of a movement - like you've said it's a classifier to distinguish it from the more club-oriented dance music from that era. but i don't consider it a genre or style - early ae is literally just techno.

i guess some of their peers just bought into the "idm" thing. they constrained their sound to this whole scene and never thought to move past it. once it went out of style and lost relevance then those artists were just totally lost. but ae just make music as ae, they don't worry about fitting neatly into little boxes and as consequence they've never been pigeon-holed.
>>
>>65288932
RA has been knocking it out of the park with their profiles/features lately imo. Some of the best interviews around and I'd love it if they did one for Ae.
