It's the day after tomorrow.

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, just let the good times flow.

Hello thrifters!

Here is my official submission for the thrift store tourney
Album: Woolly Leaves - Quiet Waters

DL Link: (M4A lossless)
https://mega.nz/#F!1M1EmAwS!CgkHn1UND_4TGk3eCmHX8Q

If you are in the tourney, feel free to DL it and listen at your convenience. Once everyone's submissions are in we will start releasing ratings on a per-album basis.

If you are not in the tourney I ask that you do not post your thoughts about the album until the ratings from the tourney are in should you choose to listen along.

Also as an added rule: Your rating for your own album won't be weighted towards it's aggregate score, so rate it accurately.

Hank Williams - 40 Greatest Hits (1978)
>honky tonk, traditional country

Thank you based Hank for saving me from an across the board forgettable chart. Sure, I'd never listen to the entire 104 minutes of this compilation on a daily basis, but the songs on display here are wonderfully weary and melancholic, and Williams' voice is obviously amazing, especially the yodelling. All the songs sounds kinda similar, but the variations in the melodies and harmonies and subjects are definitely enough to keep this from ever getting boring. Wonderful record.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica (1969)
>experimental rock

The big daddy of fucked-up rock nusic, the #1 Scaruffi-core album, Beefheart's supposed magnum opus, and the spawner of a million "FAST AND BULBOUS" memes. Do I like it? Yeah, definitely. Am I blown away by it? Nah. From a fully technical perspective, this album is a masterpiece. These songs are performed in exactly the way Beefheart intended them to be, and The Magic Band does a wonderful job transcribing these songs. The drumming is especially wonderful. But a decent amount of the time these performances don't seem tight, they just seem sloppy, like the band is almost about to lock into a wonderful groove but misses the mark every time. And that was Beefheart's intent, of course, and I respect it for that, I just don't find it all to pleasing to listen to. Luckily most of the time this album is still really nice to listen to, Beefheart's vocals are wonderful as always, Zappa's production is immaculate, and the spoken word/poetry tracks actually add quite a lot to the atmosphere of the record. Don't really get why this is so polarizing, but I like it a fair bit.

Late May calendar "reviews":

Keiichi Ohta - Ohta Keiichi no Jingai Dai Makyou

Eh, this was okay. It was like Guernica (because the guy was in Guernica) but none of the tracks really grabbed me the way Guernica tracks do. However, it could just be that I'm no longer a fan of the Guernica style. I dunno. The song weren't bad. They just weren't good either. 3/5.

As for the others...

Yes I chickened out of this hard. I was not kvlt enough to be in the mood for more doom metal and I listened to a bit of Jandek's spoken word then thought "This is too Jandek". I'm sorry for being unkvlt and not ready for the 'Dek. I'll check them out some other time in the future most likely. But let's look on the bright side, at least I can work on my June chart faster.

Glitter and Doom is one of the best live albums out there. The spoken word tracks made me realize how much I would love a podcast with Waits.

I'd suggest throwing in Symphonie fantastique
from Berlioz. Not sure what version though.

Interestingly enough the album ends with, as far as I can remember, locking in on its only repetitive groove--that slow, hypnotic groove on Veteran's Day Poppy.

While I respect your opinion, this album above all others, if just for rite of passage, demands multiple listens.

happy birth/daily/

another day, another couple albums, another couple of completely meaningless thoughtwordparagraphthings fuck being sick

>three 6 mafia - mystic stylez
nice balance between laidback and hard-hitting production, pioneering flows, nice vibes in general. gangsta boo might be my favorite part of this record, her delivery is just too fun. DEVILS DAUGHTER YEAH HO

>fishmans - kuchu camp
this was really really nice. listened to it while cooking, frying squid to nightcruising was very pleasant. however, i don't like it as much as long season, as much of it lacks the sense of winding progression that long season had. there's not much else i can say i disliked though, as i still loved listening to this record. great vocals, great atmosphere, just lovely. it'll stay in my casual rotation for a while to come.

i'll be doing a little 8 man tourney next, there are 6 spots open since i already reserved spots for nyar and mark. tell me if you want a spot, focaccia breads!

Ah, the first "review" from my recs chart.

Heiner Goebbels & Alfred 23 Harth - Goebbels Heart

Wow this was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Great sampling, great bleep bloops, great piano, great sax, basically this stuff was great. A highlight from this is the almost 16 minute longer closer, Peking-Oper. Ground Zero sampled the track (and some other stuff from G&H) heavily on RPOV1.28 (one of my favorite albums) and at first I thought to myself "Are Ground Zero hacks for this?" but as the song went on I realised RPOV1.28 is pretty different from the song. It's a different kind of beast that isn't nearly as noisy or dense but fantastic in its own way. Anyway, this was a great compilation. 4.5/5.

There are some really nice moments on this album, but when my full concentration was on listening to it I was so bored. >Radiohead – Amnesiac
Shortly after Kid A’s release, Radiohead went on the tour and started playing a bunch of new songs. A year after Kid A they just released those tracks on Amnesiac (+ included some B-Sides which are genius). Amnesiac was conceived during the same sessions but the ideas were finalized by the time Kid A was sent off to the press.
Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box opens up the album with tea kettle percussion and Colin’s wonderful bass line. Thom’s voice appears and it sounds colder than it has ever been prior. Emotionless statements of disappointment are being thrown, probably coming from behind an office box towards the manager. This track was my favorite return during the 2012 tour, where Clive played the tea kettles on his sampler.
Pyramid Song used to be called Egyptian Song, was inspired by some Mingus track. I think it was Freedom or something. Piano, Ondes, strings, and Phil’s off-beat drum section. A gorgeous, gorgeous track about reincarnation inspired by mythological ethos. Jonny playing the bowed guitar on this one live really replicates the vibe of the track well.
Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors at some point was my favorite Radiohead song. Why? I haven’t heard any proper “IDM” stuff, so this blew my mind with every listen. I do like how Thom describes the doors as a metaphor for the types of people you tend to meet over your lifetime. This track also boasts a proper (imo) usage of autotune,
You And Whose Army? is an anti-Tony Blare track with a great final section and interesting techniques used for recording the vocals. I think it is an overrated track, but the chord progression on here is brilliant.
>>
>>65272529
(wew that spacing)
I Might Be Wrong has the cool blues riff from Jonny that I automatically start playing whenever I am given a drop-d tuned guitar. It sounds very badass. Also by now it is obvious that Thom restricts a lot of his emotional power in his vocals and spends a lot of time staying “cold”. Helps when singing about trying to forget about all the bad stuff and think about the good
times.

Knives Out has my favorite video clip of all time. It’s brilliant. The track itself took more than a year for the band to write/record. It was inspired by Johnny Marr’s guitar work for The Smiths and I believe there was a moment when Ed showed it to Johnny. There was approval. The chord structure for this track is sort of similar to Paranoid Android, features lyrics about cannibalism. It is the most straight-forward track on the album, but it shares the disturbing vibes of the entire album.

Morning Bell/Amnesiac is my preferred version of the track. Let me explain why. The Kid A version seems to have this negative outcome of this whole divorce situation. The Amnesiac version borders on a light-hearted feeling and a moment of manic breakdown. I can never tell which one is the right one. The final times Thom weeps out “release me” are hard for me to break down. The glockenspiel is really pretty too.

Dollars And Cents is a Can jam gone political and angry. Anti-capitalist rant from Thom along a sick bassline from Colin. The final section of the track is extremely strong, especially during several live performances. Thom usually tries to crush the tambourine he is smacking, Ed furiously strums those two notes and Jonny plays his Ondes. The rhythms on this are fantastic.

Hunting Bears is a simple guitar riff played to Colin’s bassline. I think it works really well for its transitional function and it is currently well utilized during the live performances as an outro of The National Anthem.
>>
>>65272542
Like Spinning Plates is I Will played backwards with Thom singing the lyrics backwards so it fits this “spinning” sound. I prefer the live version (who doesn’t), but I have to say that the studio version possesses a completely different vibe to it. The very quiet synth hits amidst all the hurricane pulsing is very unnerving.

Life in A Glasshouse is my favorite Radiohead track of all time. The acoustic version of it from Meeting People Is Easy was already something to look forward to, but the studio version beats the crap out of it. Jonny and Thom invited Humphrey Lyttelton to assist the vision of a New Orleans funeral jazz inspired arrangement. After some convincing, they actually did it! Gorgeous track with that face-melting F#dim chord closing off each verse. Thom’s delivery is outstanding. The brass band makes the track feel special. I love it so much. What a closer!

Definitely my favorite Radiohead album. It might have not had the impact Kid A had or the zeitgeist of OK Computer, but I still think it is their strongest work in terms of songwriting. Even the B-sides to this thing are amazing. No flaws for me.

Guys give me your opinions.

I really want to listen to Jandek's live shows because of how much variety they bring.

However, the l feel like I am missing out on the experience if I don't watch the DVDs.At this moment I am not able to order anything from Corwood because I am not at home and don't really have a mailing address here.

What should I do? Listen to the audio only of the shows so I can keep up with the chronological album progression OR just say fuck it, finish the studio discography and hope that someday I will be able to watch all the shows and experience them in 4:3?
>>
>>65273728

Wait for when you have a mailing address. Maybe the video doesn't add that much but you'll have the music anyway, so it doesn't really matter. I'd say just do studio for now.

Neil Ardley - A Symphony of Amaranths (1972)
>Third Stream
This is fucking great. It consists of three tracks, of which the first two contrast each other, leading to the third track which is in between the first two feeling-wise.
The first track is a kind of straight forward third stream symphony track, similar to what Ornette Coleman does in Skies of America. It feels very pure and beautiful.
This purity and beauty is lost straight away in the second track which is less of a third stream track with a poem over it, which has a sad feel to it.
The third track then sits between these two in the sense that it's very melancholic. The poetry is swapped for some beautiful female vocals, which work very well with the third stream feel.

A beautiful album that I recommend to everyone, this gets a !.

Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets (1974)
>art rock, experimental rock

I honestly didn't know the title was about pissing, but even with that knowledge it's still one of my favorite album titles. Titles aside, this is mostly a wonderful album. I've always been a fan of Eno's production work (of course), and I've used his ambient records for sleeping a lot, but I've never checked out his more conventional, rocky stuff. And now I need to check out more, cos this rocks. Very ahead of its time, and now it's very obvious to see that Low and "Heroes" are very much Eno-dominated, with the soundscaping, the epic Fripp guitars, all of the motifs from the Bowie albums are present here in spades. There are some downsides here, the main one being that Eno is simply not a good singer at all. I guess that's where the Berlin albums have the leg up on this album, they don't have incredibly uncharismatic vocals (and he totally sounds like Bryan Ferry a lot, let's be real). Also the songwriting is definitely a bit scattershot at points, there's really too much tunelessness here for a pop album, it clashes with the more melodic parts of the album. But other than that, very good, incredibly well-produced record.

3.0+

i'm gonna listen to Raybeats next and then just knock of all the popular albums.

>>65268673
which is probably why it's my favorite track on the album, lmao. and i'll definitely be giving it more listens, i've listened to it a few more times and i feel about the same way.
